2008, for all its Debbie Downers, had some of the hottest dance music and videos! Since MTV won’t play them, WE WILL! From fantastical geometric landscapes to sonic glam ninjas, here are The Frisky’s picks for the Best Music Videos of the Year:
1. Empire of the Sun, “Walking On A Dream”: This Australian outfit is arguably the sweetest current glam band. Their decadence and their dance hooks are so catchy, we actually miss the ‘80s!
Women, like 41-year-old mother and five time Olympic swimmer, Dara Torres, made a lot of headlines this year. However, we also made some incredible strides out of the swimming pool. In honor of all those hardworking, won’t take no for an answer kind of bad asses who made those achievements possible, here are the Top 5 Women’s Rights Wins of 2008:
1. Aborted Anti-Choice Legislation: As America enthusiastically voted in Obama, the overwhelming majority also rejected anti-abortion legislation that would have restricted women from their legal right to choose as dictated by Roe v. Wade. Way to go South Dakota, Colorado, and California!
It’s been a big year! I just spent the last few hours pouring through the hundreds of videos we’ve posted on The Frisky, trying to determine which 15 were the funniest, the cutest, the most inspiring, simply the BEST. It was a tough call, but we hope you’ll agree that the 15 videos after the jump, which we wrote about this year on The Frisky are worth rewatching again and again and again.
With the passing of Proposition 8, 2008 has left a bad taste in a lot of our mouths. But it would be sad to let a year full of PR triumphs for one of the hardest working and most outspoken communities slip by without acknowledging all the honors and milestones that have been achieved! So, forget the h8terade, from the death of “don’t ask, don’t tell” to the first openly gay prime time news anchor, there were a lot of wins to be proud of—just take a look at the long list of Great Gay Headlines In 2008!
2008 was a year filled with ups and downs. We laughed, we cried, and we captured it all on camera! While 2009 promises plenty of tears—thanks to Brody Jenner’s upcoming show “Bromance,”, we must honor the whimper that was the past 12 months. So, to commemorate those who weren’t afraid to just let it all out, here are the Best Cries Of 2008:
10. Kenley Was Finally Humbled On “Project Runway”
Project Runway’s most hatable hack, Kenley, wouldn’t even tone it down when Tim Gunn gave her a talking to, but Diane von Furstenberg was finally able to break her! Just the mere sight of the fashion icon turned Kenley into mush. Damn, wrap dresses really do amazing things for women!
The 10 Best
1. “For those of you who don’t think length matters, I disagree.” – Martha Stewart, holding a 15-ft.-long hot dog, on an episode of her TV show.
2. “I really don’t believe that you will love the same thing when you’re 20 as you do at 30. So that was my rule: Before the age of 25, I would never get married…. I feel like you have to get to know yourself, know what you want, spend some time by yourself and be proud of who you are before you can share that with someone else.”—Beyonce
3. “I shave and groom my private areas. It’s a better presentation for me. If men require women to go through the pain, we should return the favor.”—Diddy
While it’s hard to measure your boobs for a bra, it’s easy to measure a year by them. And 2008 certainly had its peaks and valleys! The economy sagged, Barack lifted us, Heidi Montag made us heave, and Tina Fey perked us up. All in all, these past 12 months have been a titacular time! So, here are The Frisky’s favorite mammary memories of 2008…
Now that 2008 is winding down, we realize that a lot has happened in pop culture this year. Some pop culture phenomena were rather awesome, like the launching of The Frisky and Tina Fey’s Sarah Palin impersonations, but others were rather annoying or dreadful. So after the jump, our list of the 10 pop culture phenomenons we hope don’t repeat in 2009 (in no particular order).
