Quick Beauty Tip: Pure Aloe Vera For Wounds And Cold Sores

Ever since I saw “Food, Inc.” and began researching toxins in beauty products through the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, I vowed to begin eating organic and non-processed when possible, and to gradually attempt to replace my beauty aids with natural (or as close to natural as possible) products. So when I got one mother of a cold sore last weekend, instead of opting for my chemical-infused lotions and balms, I remembered once being advised to try gel directly from an aloe vera plant. You’ll commonly find aloe vera mixed in with lotions, and while it’s generally thought to have great medicinal properties for healing skin, its effectiveness isn’t exactly proven. Keep reading »

Quick Tip: Use Self-Tanner On Stretch Marks

As you’re all well aware, it’s swimsuit season. We’re half happy not to have to wear much clothing when it’s about 90 degrees out, but also half annoyed at ourselves for how self-conscious we sometimes get about the jiggly bits. We’ve all got them, but sometimes the little flaws feel more daunting than they reasonably should. Stretch marks, for example. Infuriating, right? Whether you’ve got one or 50, they’re no fun and it’s a little hard to be totally confident in a tiny bikini when your skin appears to be ripping at the seams. If you can get past them, more power to you; we’re jealous. If stretch marks cause you to spend a little too much time coming up with swimsuit strategies to cover them up, we’ve got an idea: self-tanner. Keep reading »

Give Katy Perry’s Purple Eyeshadow A Try

It’s hard to ignore the hideous ’80s images that flash before our eyes when we think of purple eyeshadow, but a recent uptick in celebs pulling off the look has forced us to re-consider our fear of the stuff. Rihanna, Sarah Jessica Parker, and a handful of other classy ladies have tried out the look, too, all with great success. After studying their triumphant purple eyeshadow usage, we came up with a few universal tips for trying out plum-colored eye makeup. [Elle UK] Keep reading »

How To Keep Your Feet Looking Nice This Summer

When I lived at home, my mom made us — and our confused friends — wash our feet in the sink before entering the house proper during the summer. In sandal weather, she could often be heard admonishing us not to “drag our street feet into the house!” As a result, I’m flexible and balanced enough to stand on one leg while the other is in the sink and consider myself an expert at warding off what I like to call “hobo feet.” Click through for tips for keeping your feet smooth and pretty, even as summer sandal dirt threatens to make them filthy and dry.

How To Get More Bang For Your Buck In The Bathroom

When I’ve shelled out big bucks for beauty products, I’d like them to last as long as possible. But what can you do besides turn bottles upside down when products get down to the end? Brokelyn compiled a list of suggestions for how to make items in your medicine cabinet go the distance. While some were extreme (we don’t think we’d want to use a 17-cent disposable razor for a whole year anyway), we’re going to follow the four suggestions after the jump. [Brokelyn] Keep reading »

5 Hair Secrets Supermodels Swear By

Sure, you take one look at most supermodels and assume they roll out of bed, throw clothes on and generally look gorge by virtue of being, well, them. Surprise, surprise, it’s not all genetics (though they are pretty gifted in that department). More than most of us, models have to be super-militant about their skin and hair routines, because to achieve that shiny, bouncy, pretty hair their heads go through hell. What’s The Lamest Beauty Tip You’ve Ever Heard?

For all the totally useful beauty pearls of wisdom out there, there are also plenty of foolish pieces of advice. For example, no matter how many people swear by it, we’ll never put urine on our zits (!?), and matching our toe and finger nail polish shades isn’t something we’ve ever been remotely interested in. Beauty expert Courtney Dunlop alerted us to some of the so-called beauty “rules” she thinks are particularly ridic, after the jump! Keep reading »

How To Do Your Makeup In 5 Minutes

When I hear stories about people who wake up at 5 a.m. to “put their face on,” I kind of feel like vomiting. (And if I weren’t too busy sleeping in, I would.) Here’s all you need to look good without waking up at the ass crack of dawn. Keep reading »
