When I was in middle school, I was totally that kid who used every holiday as an opportunity to spray-paint my hair with that temporary aerosol dye they sold at Halloween stores. St. Patricks Day? Green tips! Christmas? Red tips! It bled onto everything and left plenty of my favorite T-shirts covered in residual dye. But I thought I looked incredibly stylish.
When the hair chalk trend started to surface on my Pinterest feed, it seemed like the grown-up version of the spray I used to love. When The Body Shop sent us bright blue hair chalk, called Falling For Blue, it seemed like a good bet. I gave it a try and guess what? I loved it. Keep reading »
Some women never leave the house without lipstick. I never leave the house without eyebrows. Many assumed my eyebrows are so sparse because of over-plucking, but in reality they just never grew in. This is it. Some women (like Whoopi Goldberg) simply go without and others (like Miley Cyrus) conceal them. I like to fill them Elizabeth Taylor-style. Eyebrows are not only essential to facial expressions; they enhance every look from natural to bold. Keep reading »
My pale, winter skin had set in, and I needed to update my go-to concealer for a lighter shade. Instead of purchasing the same solution, I opted to try the well-reviewed Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer. This product claims to nourish skin with jojoba and honey, while providing waterproof, crease proof, and transfer resistant coverage. Ha, yeah right. As someone who has struggled to find concealer to cover dark under eye circles, I was skeptical. If this product could provide the coverage I desired, the nourishing powers would simply be a bonus. I’m not a lipstick person. Not in the slightest. For the most part, avoiding lipstick is due to my enormous fear that it’s going to smear all over my face or my teeth. I’ve seen it happen to too many women and my second-hand embarrassment for them has scared me away from wearing lipstick in my day to day life. I’ll wear it on a rare special occasion, but otherwise my lip product of choice is Eos lip balm.
The thing is, though, I like how lipstick looks on me. Every time I’ve ever gotten my makeup done by a professional, they finish with the lips and I love how it looks. I have small, thin lips and it’s sort of amazing, the optical illusion tricks that can give me a pout that I cannot believe is on my own face. So when a girl friend took me shopping at Make Up For Ever to buy makeup for my wedding, I bought their Rouge Artist Natural lipstick in a sheer natural pink (Iridescent Pink Gold — shown on me after the jump!) that’s perfect for every day wear. Taking care of my skin always feels like a chore. Whether it’s taking my makeup off before I go to bed or using the Clarisonic Mia (which gets me tons of compliments, for real), it’s not a habit. Or it’s a bad habit. Whatever, you know what I mean. But when Origins sent The Frisky office one of their moisturizers, I found a reason to actually enjoy washing my face. Their Make A Difference Plus+ ultra-rich moisturizer feels so good on my dry skin. Keep reading »
A few days before I got married, one of my BFF’s gifted me a shopping spree at Make Up For Ever. Lilit knew I was doing my own makeup for my wedding — hey, Kate Middleton did it! — so she wanted to help out. I got some gorgeous lipstick, foundation, green-tinted primer, and their iconic HD Powder. But as I was checking out, the makeup artist/salesgirl dropped a free sample into my shopping bag. “You need this,” she said. I looked in the bag. It was Make Up For Ever Aqua Smoky Lash Waterproof Extra Black Mascara.
Duh. I cry at cotton commercials. Of course I was going to cry like a baby on my wedding day. And Thank God for that lady who gave me the waterproof mascara, because I did. Keep reading »
