Finding the right foundation never stops being annoying, does it? Some go on so creamy that it looks like glop. Others go on so sheer that you barely get any coverage. I’ve been happily wearing Maybelline’s FIT ME foundation for about six months, but as spring turns to summer, I’m keen for something that feels lighter on my skin. Enter Napoleon Perdis Off Duty Tinted Moisturizer — it is perfect. As a tinted moisturizer virgin, I wish I’d found this years ago. Keep reading »
If you are unfortunate enough to be born with dry skin, your life will go something like this:
- Everyone from dermatologists to fashion magazines will tell you that you have to wash your face with Cetaphil.
- You will realize they are right, so you will wash your face with Cetaphil.
- This will get very boring very quickly and possibly not even work.
This was the story of my life. And then a lovely actress decided to try her hand at skincare and beauty products, price her line, called Nuance Salma Hayek, quite reasonably, and sell it as CVS … and change my skincare routine forever. Keep reading »
Next time the Avon lady comes a-calling, I’m not going to buy any nail polish from her. Avon sent the Frisky office some of their spring/summer products and I have to be honest, I was pretty disappointed with their Avon Nailwear Pro polish. (You’ve been seeing me wear it in the color Coral Reef all week in What Are We Wearing Today? photos.) Keep reading »
As much as I love trendy makeup looks like gold smoky eyes and sparkly teal eye shadow, my all-time favorite will always be winged black eyeliner. It’s sexy, it’s dramatic, and my commitment to perfecting it means I’m always on the hunt for new eyeliners that are affordable, flattering, and easy to apply. I’ve tried everything–gels, liquids, creamy kohl pencils–and I’ve recently discovered a new favorite, the Maybelline Master Precise eyeliner pen. Why do I love it? Let me count the ways … Keep reading »
I hereby commence the first-ever meeting of the Ladies Whose Lips Are So Thin We’re Afraid Of Wearing Lipstick support group! So far, Amelia and I are the only members, but with the help of our sponsors, both of us have been making inroads.
Part of my recovery can be attributed to the discovery of my favorite lipstick in the universe, Kate Spade’s Supercalafragilipstick. But at $24 a tube, it’s more of a special occasion lipstick. For everyday wear, I’m crushing on the much-more-broke-ass-mofo-friendly CoverGirl’s Natureluxe Gloss Balm. Keep reading »
If you couldn’t already tell, using natural skincare is incredibly important to me. I have extremely sensitive skin that reacts negatively to anything it could possibly react negatively to — sulfates, parabens, mineral oil, many things with weird chemical-sounding names and, lo and behold, most drugstore makeup and skincare (woe!). I really just can’t use anything that isn’t geared towards sad, sensitive people like me. I’m really into skincare, and while most people can shop themselves silly at drugstores without a huge price tag and without worrying about the consequences, I just can’t. I have to wait and eventually shell out the big bucks for something that won’t make me break out, whether it be in blemishes or in hives. Keep reading »
Mascara is a strange and mysterious product. Some of my friends’ favorite brands flake and clump on my lashes, and some formulas I swear by have been horror shows for my friends. Even so, people tend to feel very strongly about their preferred mascara, and it’s not uncommon for a beauty blogger to be kicked off the internet for professing an unpopular opinion on Maybelline Great Lash. So with all that in mind, I’d like to talk about Benefit’s BADgal Lash Mascara and how much I hated it… Keep reading »
Skincare used to be a whole daunting arena of the beauty industry that I avoided out of fear. My dry, sensitive skin is so fickle. I washed daily with Cetaphil, scrubbed once or twice a week with St. Ives Apricot Scrub, and glopped on a pricy Bliss face mask every month or so. Most days I removed my makeup before going to bed, but not always, because I am lazy. My skin neither looked nor felt particularly good or particularly bad — just kinda blah and dry, as usual.
In the past few months, I’ve gotten really into skincare for my criminally dry visage. I’ve added new skincare products to my arsenal, which I’ll save for Beauty Test Drives another day. My skin has really been perking up, to the point where The Frisky’s boss has been complimenting me! And for the past few days, I have been using a little handheld device called the Clarisonic Mia 2. No joke, it’s already making my skin look and feel amazing. Keep reading »
I’ve found an easy-peasy smoky eye in a tube. Yeah, a tube. It’s not an eyeshadow — it’s a cream. No brushes required. No large palettes to carry around. No loose powder flaking on the tops of my cheeks. BECCA’s Eye Tint créme is the easiest smoky eye I’ve ever done.

Let’s begin with a disclaimer: this is less of a Beauty Test Drive and more of a Beauty Necessity for me, but I want to share it. This Kiehl’s deodorant and I have never been separated, not once, since I first started using it, like, six years ago. It’s my must-have, my holy grail, and if you convert, it’ll be yours, too. It’s that good. My skin is completely incompatible with drugstore deodorants. Something in them — the fragrance, maybe? — makes my underarms red, itchy, and inflamed, and to add insult to injury, the sickening, synthetic scents are what I really can’t stand. I’ve used every brand on shelves, plus their sensitive skin versions, and they’ve all left me scaly, smelling of plastic fruits, and wholly dissatisfied. And forget “unscented” offerings; you might as well forgo deodorant altogether. Keep reading »
