Once upon a time, I found myself in Las Vegas with no concealer in my makeup bag. I can say with absolutely certainty that Las Vegas is the worst place in the world to go without concealer, what with the lack of sleep, polluted air, fluorescent lighting, and the small but real chance of meeting Celine Dion and taking a photo with her that you’ll obviously need to have printed on a 5×7 foot canvas to hang over your mantle for all eternity. I couldn’t risk looking less than my best for that momentous occasion, so I popped into Nordstrom, headed to the MAC counter and asked for a recommendation. The MAC ladies plopped me down in a chair, blended a bit of Prep + Prime Highlighter in “Radiant Rose” under my eyes, and handed me a mirror. “Damn,” I said, “I think I’m ready for my photo with Celine.”
I may not have met Celine on that trip (I’ve got a good feeling about next year), but I did find a new staple for my makeup bag. Read on for details! Keep reading »
Not long ago, BB cream was the biggest buzz in beauty. But lately, it’s all but disappeared from the lips of magazine editors and bloggers. Brands that are just now getting on their BB game are, well, kind of late to the party. The Asian favorite formula ended up being a bit of a disappointment in the U.S. market — though there are several successful versions being offered (Smashbox, Boscia, and Bobbi Brown come to mind), big drugstore companies like Maybelline and L’Oreal dropped the ball on BB by abandoning sunscreen as its main attraction.
When I heard that “The Skincare Makeup” brand Jane Iredale was at long last offering their own addition to the list of American BB creams with Glow Time Full Coverage Mineral BB Cream, I knew I would have to forgo my New Makeup Ban (psh, yeah right) to give it a try. With a smooth, creamy texture, SPF 25, and the kind of hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic natural ingredients that make you think it might be safe to eat, I was not disappointed — in fact, it restored my faith in the BB cream genre, and I’ll tell you why. I’ve always thought primer was a slightly dodgy beauty product. Do I really need to put more gunk on my face, on top of my moisturizer and serum but under my makeup? Apparently so.
I’ll admit primer does keep foundation and concealer on my face longer, which is ideal for days that my skin is speckled with pre-period pimples. I usually wore a primer from Smashbox, but only on rare those premenstrual occasions. However, when Target sent me their JK Jemma Kidd Instant Life Skin Perfecting primer to try, I gave it a shot. BB cream is one of those makeup products that just appeared on the American market in the past year, causing every woman here to scratch her chin and say, “Hmmm, do we really need this?!” BB cream is basically a combination foundation/moisturizer/primer and sometimes it’s got sunscreen in it, too. Some people swear by their BB cream. I know a few ladies who go nuts for Garnier BB cream, for instance. So when The Body Shop sent the The Frisky a few shades of their new All-In-One BB Cream to test drive, I just had to pick it up. While I’m not a full-on BB cream convert, I have to admit it’s a lot less of a hassle than using a foundation and makeup brush! Keep reading »
I think I’ve mentioned my love for Revlon Lip Butters a few times now, most recently in the context of my summer makeup routine, but I thought it was time to make things official and
ask Lip Butter to marry me write up a full Beauty Test Drive. This awesome lip balm/lipstick hybrid is the bestselling lip color of the year, and I’ve contributed to its success by buying three shades (so far) and recommending it to many of my friends, especially the ones who are hesitant about lipstick. Want to know why? Get the scoop, after the jump… Keep reading »
