As a beauty and style editor, I get to try lots and lots of skincare products. You should see my bathroom at home (actually, you shouldn’t see my bathroom at home, it’s a hoarder’s paradise). There’s a lot of good stuff out there, but rarely do I find a product that’s legitimately great. Fresh’s new Lotus Youth Cream is that product. An anti-aging face cream with a propietary Super 7 Complex, the Lotus Youth Cream works to minimize the signs of aging and make your skin feel all dewy and fresh. There’s a bunch of good-for-your-skin stuff in it, like maca root extract, which apparently speeds up cell turnover; lotus flower extract, which defends against free radicals; and blue-green algae, which preserves collagen. That’s the long answer to why you’d want to use this stuff. The short answer is, it makes your skin look luminous and beautiful and radiant. [$42, Fresh]

I was playing with makeup at the Jane Iredale display the other day when I noticed a pretty purple eye shadow lurking behind the BB cream. I opened the tester and smeared a bit on the back of my hand, and lo and behold, it was the most perfect, shimmery lavender color I’d ever seen in my life. It was also $19, which is more than I usually spend on eye shadow. Still, the package claimed it was great for sensitive skin and eyes, and I’d heard rave reviews about Jane Iredale products, so I went for it. Read on to get the full scoop! Keep reading »

Makeup Bag: Rejuvenate Dry, Dull Winter Skin

Is it just us, or is January the most painfully slow month of the year? We’re feeling optimistic towards February, because after February comes March, and you know what March means — spring! But back to right here, right now; we’re trudging through the next couple of weeks, and we’re the first to admit that this winter is wreaking havoc on our complexions. Not only do we have to put up with the cold air and harsh wind outside, but once we’re safely contained indoors, we’ve got artificial heat sucking the life out of our skin. Not cool. If you’re in the same predicament, fear not — we rounded up 10 rich, revitalizing products that are guaranteed to get you looking springtime fresh, even in the dead of winter.

Makeup Bag: The Best Beauty Buys $25 And Under

I don’t know about you, but my New Year’s resolutions have a lot to do with being a little more frugal. It hurts to part with my crazy-high skincare and makeup budget (seriously, what’s wrong with me?), but this is something that must be done. Rather than go cold turkey on my favorite products (never a good idea), I’ve found that many of them come in significantly cheaper mini forms, so I don’t have to sacrifice style for savings… and neither do you! Here are 10 of my favorite, no-fail beauty products that ring in at just $25 or under, perfect for your (and my) penny-pinching program. Keep reading »

We generally pride ourselves on being perfectly composed and businesslike here at The Frisky offices ahahahahahaha, but I think we can all agree that we’ve endured a rough couple of weeks. Mercury Retrograde has had its wicked way with us, and needless to say, there have been some tears. Quite a few, in fact. So many that we now consider ourselves well-versed experts in the art of looking good (read: halfway acceptable, maybe), even when we feel like absolute shit. Leaving the house may be the very last thing you want to do when you’re feeling godawful for whatever reason, yet part of any recovery process is getting out in the world and reminding yourself that, yes, life goes on … but we’ve got you covered should you find yourself breaking down in the produce aisle. We know. It happens.

My history of drugstore impulse purchases has definitely been hit and miss. I have approximately $500 worth of greasy hair potions stashed in my bathroom cabinet that is proof of the “miss” part, but sometimes my tendency to wander the aisles of Walgreens late at night and buy whatever random beauty product catches my eye pays off. Exhibit A: this Organix Moroccan Argan Oil Body Lotion… Keep reading »

I’ve never been big on lipstick. I have thin lips and I also drink coffee constantly, so it seemed like any foray into lipstick would be a waste. But as I get older (and wean myself off caffeine), I’ve taken the plunge into what feels like more grown-up makeup than my usual lip balm, or if I’m feeling fancy, lip gloss. Recently I splurged on Bobbi Brown’s Rich Lip Color in Cosmic Raspberry at Bloomingdales (AKA that flaming pit in which I throw my money). Keep reading »

Some of us were born with those wonderful genes which keep us looking bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, even on one hour of sleep. I am not one of those people. The worst compliment any guy ever gave me was that he “loved the dark circles under my eyes.” I wanted to crawl in a hole and die. If I miss even five minutes of sleep, shed one tear, or have a touch of congestion I get monster bags under my eyes. I can’t help it! It’s genetic. I’ve tried to combat this with every kind of expensive lotion or potion on the market.

Next up is Goldie’s Bright Eyes bar, which boasts of being a miracle product. Made from all-natural ingredients like carrot juice and aloe, this facial soap protects against wrinkles, smooths uneven skin and soothes any skin irritation. I normally hate anything that’s referred to as a miracle product (what’s the catch?), but in this case, it might be true. For under $10, I’m certainly willing to find out.
