If the eyes are the windows into the soul, then makeup bags are the windows into clutter shame. Unfortunately, I’ve got lots: from my closet to my dresser drawer to my bathroom to on top of my dresser, my makeup takes up more per-square-inch space than I do.
There’s got to be an easier way to find that perfect cobalt blue eyeshadow at the exact moment I did it. I’ve got to get organized! And yup, Pinterest is here to help. Here are six super-easy, relatively inexpensive ways to organize your abominable makeup stash! [Photo: Luuux.com]
I inherited a lot of things from my mother (for starters: high cheekbones, bullheadedness, a taste for afternoon naps and all things fermented grape), but my love of beauty products wasn’t one of them. It’s actually more likely that my propensity towards packed bathroom cabinets and overflowing shower ledges was directly derived from my father, who has been hoarding L’Occitane Green Tea Shower Gel in case of apocalypse since before I was born. (And not in vain: they actually did discontinue it a few years back, just as he feared.) My mother, on the other hand, doesn’t wash her face, never throws anything out, and insists on using the same L’Oreal lip gloss every day, even despite my many attempts at replacing it with Yves Saint Laurent under her nose.
Even so, I’m not surprised that a new British study found, in a poll of 2,000 women, that one third of those women use the same beauty products as their mothers. According to the research, daughters begin borrowing their mother’s products at the average age of 13, and 40 percent of 18 to 24-year-olds continue to use those same products. Keep reading »
As The Frisky’s resident beauty hoarder, I try a lot of different skincare products. Not that I’m complaining (at all, whatsoever): skincare is kind of my thing, and I will put literally anything on my face — provided I’ve given the ingredients a once-over to make sure I approve, of course. Very rarely, however, does a product line truly wow me, and the ones that do tend to be well found-out; as in, I don’t need to evangelize because they’re already super-popular, and I don’t want to have any hand in them flying off the shelves lest I not be able to find them anymore (I’m looking at you, Tata Harper, you perfect product-formulator, you). But when I fall in love with something brand new to the market, that is when it comes time for me to shout it from the rooftops. Orico is one such line. This British import, powered by Ecocert certified organic ingredients like plant oils and advanced antioxidants, was created with city slickers in mind: all of their products are formulated for skin that is frequently exposed to pollution, stress, air-conditioning, and heating. Which, unless you live in a zen forest (and I am so jealous if you do), applies to pretty much everyone. Since launching stateside at the end of January, Orico has already been recommended by Vogue and Vanity Fair. Bottom line? Go place your order before everyone else beats you to it. Now you really have no excuse not to lotion up after the shower. Tired or lazy or in a rush? It doesn’t matter. Vaseline’s Spray & Go Moisturizer makes the lotioning process foolproof. Just aim and spray. This is such great news for that spot on the middle of my back that I can’t reach. And forget about waiting for it to absorb into your skin before you put your clothes on. It dries immediately, without leaving those white streaks all over your favorite LBD. You’ll emerge with glowy skin, smelling like a person who spends hours getting ready. As if. [$5.99, Target]
Is this winter weather killing your lips? Because it’s seriously killing my lips. Last night, as I tried to catch up on “Downton Abbey” I got super distracted by how cracked my lips were and had to pause and find my balm (it had slipped under the bed). Don’t do what I did though — have a good balm at the ready. We’ve got ten super rich, moisturizing options, at virtually every price point. Check ‘em out! Keep reading »
I love makeup, but my makeup routine? Fairly standard: A bit of the smudgy black eyeliner and a liberal swabbing of blush and bronzer to mask my hideously pale face and I’m set. So when Aveda sent me their new Petal Essence Eye Definer in Jade Vine in advance of its February 10 release date, I was like, whaaaaaat? And then I was like, it’s Tuesday, live a little! Try it already! Keep reading »
As a beauty and style editor, I get to try lots and lots of skincare products. You should see my bathroom at home (actually, you shouldn’t see my bathroom at home, it’s a hoarder’s paradise). There’s a lot of good stuff out there, but rarely do I find a product that’s legitimately great. Fresh’s new Lotus Youth Cream is that product. An anti-aging face cream with a propietary Super 7 Complex, the Lotus Youth Cream works to minimize the signs of aging and make your skin feel all dewy and fresh. There’s a bunch of good-for-your-skin stuff in it, like maca root extract, which apparently speeds up cell turnover; lotus flower extract, which defends against free radicals; and blue-green algae, which preserves collagen. That’s the long answer to why you’d want to use this stuff. The short answer is, it makes your skin look luminous and beautiful and radiant. [$42, Fresh]
I was playing with makeup at the Jane Iredale display the other day when I noticed a pretty purple eye shadow lurking behind the BB cream. I opened the tester and smeared a bit on the back of my hand, and lo and behold, it was the most perfect, shimmery lavender color I’d ever seen in my life. It was also $19, which is more than I usually spend on eye shadow. Still, the package claimed it was great for sensitive skin and eyes, and I’d heard rave reviews about Jane Iredale products, so I went for it. Read on to get the full scoop! Keep reading »
Is it just us, or is January the most painfully slow month of the year? We’re feeling optimistic towards February, because after February comes March, and you know what March means — spring! But back to right here, right now; we’re trudging through the next couple of weeks, and we’re the first to admit that this winter is wreaking havoc on our complexions. Not only do we have to put up with the cold air and harsh wind outside, but once we’re safely contained indoors, we’ve got artificial heat sucking the life out of our skin. Not cool. If you’re in the same predicament, fear not — we rounded up 10 rich, revitalizing products that are guaranteed to get you looking springtime fresh, even in the dead of winter.
I don’t know about you, but my New Year’s resolutions have a lot to do with being a little more frugal. It hurts to part with my crazy-high skincare and makeup budget (seriously, what’s wrong with me?), but this is something that must be done. Rather than go cold turkey on my favorite products (never a good idea), I’ve found that many of them come in significantly cheaper mini forms, so I don’t have to sacrifice style for savings… and neither do you! Here are 10 of my favorite, no-fail beauty products that ring in at just $25 or under, perfect for your (and my) penny-pinching program. Keep reading »
