Jenna Talackova is a 23-year-old, blonde-haired, blue-eyed Miss Canada pageant queen, who’s probably not much different than her fellow pageant competitors — except that that she was born a boy. Talackova says she knew she was in the wrong body by the time she was 4, and began living as a girl (and undergoing hormone therapy) at the age of 14. By 19, she had gender reassignment surgery, and was making the rounds on the pageant circuit. In 2010 she was a finalist in Thailand’s Miss International Queen, a pageant specifically for transsexuals.

But Talackova wanted more — and so she applied to and competed in the Miss Universe Canada competition. Keep reading »

  • Former Miss USA Rima Fakih, 26, was arrested this weekend in Highland Park, Michigan, for drunk driving. Rima Fakih tweeted on Saturday “Let’s clear things up now … I’m NOT in Michigan and I’m NOT in Jail! Wrong Fakih!” but the tweet was later removed. Her lawyer has confirmed Rima was busted for a DUI. In 2010, Rima Fakih became the first Arab-American to win the Miss USA pageant. [People]

Halloween Inspiration Board: MaKenzie From “Toddlers & Tiaras”

Inspiration: Princess Bea
All it takes is the fascinator, really. Read More »

“Toddlers & Tiaras” is one of our favorite trainwreck shows to watch and in the last year the TLC kiddle pageant reality show has become rather controversial. Tots dressed as movie hookers! Toddlers getting waxed! Wee ones high on Pixie Sticks! The parenting, it is questionable. The standout “T&T” regular, in our opinion, is little MaKenzie, a Southern firecracker who will not go anywhere without her beloved pacifier NiNi. As an adult, dressing up like a “T&T” superstar is basically the same as dressing like a slutty princess — seriously, the short, poofy dresses are nearly identical. Pop in a NiNi, don a crown, tan your skin, apply 17 pounds of brightly colored eyeshadow, and scream with authority at anyone in your vicinity, “Don’t you EVER do that again!” and you’re set. Find out how to get the costume, after the jump! Keep reading »

Muslim Beauty Pageant Contestant Katya Koren Stoned To Death

Katya Koren, a 19-year-old contestant in the Miss Ukraine beauty pageant, was found stoned to death in a forest this week. Police are not clear on who killed her, but the main suspect is a mentally unstable 16-year-old boy who confessed to killing Koren, a Muslim, for violating sharia law by participating in pageants. The boy was possibly a “stalker” who was “obsessed” with Katya Koren and may have raped her before killing her. Other reports say that Katya Koren was stoned to death by a whole group of Muslims enacting sharia law. According to the UK’s Telegraph newspaper, enacting sharia law in that part of the Ukraine is rare.

It’s incredibly sad in either case. But as someone who is extremely critical and unsupportive of beauty pageants, I just wanted to note that something I scoff at in America is, in other parts of the world, a freedom that I take for granted.

Miss Turkey Shills For Carl’s Jr.’s Turkey Burger

Among what I’m sure are the many honors of Miss Turkey Gizem Memiç, the face of Carl’s Jr.’s turkey burger is surely on top. In Carl’s Jr.’s latest commercial, Miss Turkey shills for the fast food joint’s turkey burgers in stiletto heels, a pageant sash and a custom-made bikini with little turkey burgers printed on it. While Carl’s Jr. commercials are always gratuitously frat-tastic — boobs! fried meat! blowjob imagery! — I have to admit that bikini is pretty awesome. Congratulations, Carl’s Jr., you made a commercial that’s approaching slightly tasteful. [YouTube via Styleite] Keep reading »

North Carolina Crowns A Bald Beauty Queen

I love it when a beauty pageant doesn’t push a tired, old beauty standard! This weekend, the 2011 Mrs. Black North Carolina pageant crowned the state’s very first bald beauty queen. Sandra Dubose-Gibson, 37, lost all her hair at age 25 when she developed alopecia, an autoimmune disease that attacks the hair follicles. Sandra, who works as a singer and an inspirational speaker, says she wants to continue to spread her message of embracing inner beauty, which she found once she accepted that her hair did not define her. That’s the kind of pageant message I can actually get behind.

After the jump, check out a music video for her song “I’m Beautiful,” which shows Sandra venturing out in the world with a bald head for the very first time: Keep reading »

Czech Beauty Queens Spanked After Sexy Handcuff Photos Surface

Czech beauty queens handcufss

Okay, false advertising. No actual Czech beauty queens actually get spanked in this story. But the lovely ladies in the Miss Czech 2011 pageant were sternly warned they could be disqualified after photos appeared of them playing with sex toys, including handcuffs. Kinky Czech beauty queens are just about the only beauty queens I can handle, frankly. The women were reportedly drunkenly celebrating at a birthday party when the sex toys and the cameras came out. Come on, ladies! Amateur move right there. Nevertheless, I think it’s totally dumb that pageants based on looks try to make the contestants adhere to some B.S. “good girls don’t!” ideal. Good girls do, duh. [The Sun UK] Keep reading »

Beauty Pageant Drama Used To Be A Lot More Feisty

These days, the most exciting thing to happen at a beauty pageant is someone saying Americans cannot find the United States on a map “because they don’t have maps.” But back in 1970, things got way more feisty! This weekend was the 40th anniversary of the 1970 Miss World Pageant, when a feminist group called the Women’s Liberation Movement pelted smoke-, flour- and stink-bombs at the host, Bob Hope, while they chanted, “We’re not beautiful, we’re not ugly, we’re angry!” Keep reading »

These Pregnant Women Sure Look Fat In A Bikini Contest

I’m the last person to say a new mama can’t be sexy. But this bikini contest for pregnant women is bizarro. Moms-to-be don’t need to pop every which way out of a thong bikini to look beautiful. And seriously, anyone who is that knocked up shouldn’t be allowed to wear platform boots unless she’s trying to self-abort during a disco dance-off.

But hey, one pregnant woman’s pickles and ice cream is another pregnant woman’s fishnet thigh-highs. [Dlisted]

UPDATE: Oh hai! So, seems some of y’all didn’t quite get that Jessica was kidding. Well, she was. Hugely. PUN! I would like to assume anyone who’s read Jessica’s stuff on The Frisky — and complained about her being fat-centric or something — would get that she wasn’t being serious, but for those of you who were unaware, this was meant entirely tongue in cheek. And now I shall return to devouring a pint of ice cream and a jar of pickles. Even though I am not pregnant. Keep reading »

Miss New York Wins Crown With Gay Rights Platform

Meet Miss New York 2010, Claire Buffie. Like many beauty queens before her, Claire has selected a platform to run her campaign for Miss America on, only she hasn’t selected a topic that’s as palatable as, say, “breast cancer research” or “education.” No, Claire won her state competition — and is competing for Miss America — on a gay rights platform, calling for equal treatment of gays and lesbians. As Drew Grant writes over at Crushable, this is especially awesome considering most beauty queens are “pigeonholed as the Carrie Prejean anti-gay-sex/pro-secret-porn-tape type.” Claire is the first woman in the pageant’s 100-year history to be campaigning on this issue and it’s a personal one for her; her sister is a lesbian. In this interview with MSNBC, Claire says she isn’t worried that the controversial issue — and her progressive views — will harm her chances at taking the crown. She says the Miss America organization is “looking for a woman who is intelligent and compassionate, and who is working every day diligently in her community to effect positive and lasting change, and that’s exactly what I’m doing.” [Crushable] Keep reading »
