It’s never too early to start prepping your child to be a beauty queen. At least, that’s what mom-to-be Jenny Oliver thinks. At seven months pregnant, she’s already entered her unborn daughter, tentatively named Ella, into her first Bonnie Baby pageant.

“With my dance skills and her sister Jess’s knowledge of pageants, there’s no way she won’t win the prize for bonniest baby … It was only a tenner to enter her and I believe you should start them young. Ella will do so much better in life with all that experience under her belt … She’s only going to be three months old but she’ll have a bit of fun on the day … Walking down that catwalk with my gorgeous baby will make me feel a million dollars — even though I’ll still be carrying my baby weight and wearing daggy clothes. I hope she wins — it would be fab to have a baby sash and crown to add to the collection. I have so much planned for her.”

The Miss International Queen Competition Is A Beauty Pageant Unlike Any Other

This past week, a beauty pageant of an entirely different kind took place in Thailand. The Miss International Queen Pageant is a transgender and transsexual beauty pageant where contestants must have been born male in order to participate. Now in its 8th year, the Miss International Queen Pageant aims to increase visibility and acceptance of transgender and transsexual people. Plus, it’s a great excuse to dress up. This year, 21 contestants from 14 countries journeyed to Pattaya, Thailand, to compete. The winner was Kevin Balot from the Philippines, who took home the $10,000 prize and bragging rights.  After the jump, Kevin and some of the other contestants strut their stuff.

Well, this sounds rather strange: Promoters in Israel organized a “Miss Holocaust Survivor” pageant. Three hundred women from across the country signed up to compete, and 14 finalists were chosen. Pageant organizer Shimon Sabag said the pageant’s popularity was a sign that it was in good taste, but Colette Avital, chair of one of Israel’s leading Holocaust survivors’ groups, said, “It sounds totally macabre to me. I’m in favor of enriching lives, but a one-time pageant masquerading [survivors] … is not what is going to make their lives more meaningful.” Keep reading »

Yesterday, Sheena Monnin, Miss Pennsylvania USA 2012, resigned from the Miss USA pageant system, claiming she discovered documents that proved that the Miss USA contest — which aired on June 3 — was actually rigged! Quelle horror! According to Monnin, she quit after a fellow contestant spotted a list that announced the top five contestants before the show actually happened. In a post on her Facebook wall, she relayed the story:

I witnessed another contestant who said she saw the list of the Top 5 BEFORE THE SHOW EVER STARTED proceed to call out in order who the Top 5 were before they were announced on stage. Apparently the morning of June 3rd she saw a folder lying open to a page that said ‘FINAL SHOW Telecast, June 3, 2012′ and she saw the places for Top 5 already filled in. Thinking she was just seeing a rehearsal fake top 5 from a previous day she walked away, then realized that it had without a doubt been labeled as the Final Show Telecast, June 3rd. After the Top 16 were called and we were standing backstage she hesitantly said to me and another contestant that she knew who the Top 5 were. I said ‘who do you think they will be?’ She said that she didn’t ‘think’ she ‘knew’ because she saw the list that morning. She relayed whose names were on the list. Then we agreed to wait and see if that was indeed the Top 5 called that night. After it was indeed the Top 5 I knew the show must be rigged. Keep reading »

Jenna Talackova is a 23-year-old, blonde-haired, blue-eyed Miss Canada pageant queen, who’s probably not much different than her fellow pageant competitors — except that that she was born a boy. Talackova says she knew she was in the wrong body by the time she was 4, and began living as a girl (and undergoing hormone therapy) at the age of 14. By 19, she had gender reassignment surgery, and was making the rounds on the pageant circuit. In 2010 she was a finalist in Thailand’s Miss International Queen, a pageant specifically for transsexuals.

But Talackova wanted more — and so she applied to and competed in the Miss Universe Canada competition. Keep reading »

  • Former Miss USA Rima Fakih, 26, was arrested this weekend in Highland Park, Michigan, for drunk driving. Rima Fakih tweeted on Saturday “Let’s clear things up now … I’m NOT in Michigan and I’m NOT in Jail! Wrong Fakih!” but the tweet was later removed. Her lawyer has confirmed Rima was busted for a DUI. In 2010, Rima Fakih became the first Arab-American to win the Miss USA pageant. [People]

Halloween Inspiration Board: MaKenzie From “Toddlers & Tiaras”

Inspiration: Princess Bea
All it takes is the fascinator, really. Read More »

“Toddlers & Tiaras” is one of our favorite trainwreck shows to watch and in the last year the TLC kiddle pageant reality show has become rather controversial. Tots dressed as movie hookers! Toddlers getting waxed! Wee ones high on Pixie Sticks! The parenting, it is questionable. The standout “T&T” regular, in our opinion, is little MaKenzie, a Southern firecracker who will not go anywhere without her beloved pacifier NiNi. As an adult, dressing up like a “T&T” superstar is basically the same as dressing like a slutty princess — seriously, the short, poofy dresses are nearly identical. Pop in a NiNi, don a crown, tan your skin, apply 17 pounds of brightly colored eyeshadow, and scream with authority at anyone in your vicinity, “Don’t you EVER do that again!” and you’re set. Find out how to get the costume, after the jump! Keep reading »

Muslim Beauty Pageant Contestant Katya Koren Stoned To Death

Katya Koren, a 19-year-old contestant in the Miss Ukraine beauty pageant, was found stoned to death in a forest this week. Police are not clear on who killed her, but the main suspect is a mentally unstable 16-year-old boy who confessed to killing Koren, a Muslim, for violating sharia law by participating in pageants. The boy was possibly a “stalker” who was “obsessed” with Katya Koren and may have raped her before killing her. Other reports say that Katya Koren was stoned to death by a whole group of Muslims enacting sharia law. According to the UK’s Telegraph newspaper, enacting sharia law in that part of the Ukraine is rare.

It’s incredibly sad in either case. But as someone who is extremely critical and unsupportive of beauty pageants, I just wanted to note that something I scoff at in America is, in other parts of the world, a freedom that I take for granted.

Miss Turkey Shills For Carl’s Jr.’s Turkey Burger

Among what I’m sure are the many honors of Miss Turkey Gizem Memiç, the face of Carl’s Jr.’s turkey burger is surely on top. In Carl’s Jr.’s latest commercial, Miss Turkey shills for the fast food joint’s turkey burgers in stiletto heels, a pageant sash and a custom-made bikini with little turkey burgers printed on it. While Carl’s Jr. commercials are always gratuitously frat-tastic — boobs! fried meat! blowjob imagery! — I have to admit that bikini is pretty awesome. Congratulations, Carl’s Jr., you made a commercial that’s approaching slightly tasteful. [YouTube via Styleite] Keep reading »

North Carolina Crowns A Bald Beauty Queen

I love it when a beauty pageant doesn’t push a tired, old beauty standard! This weekend, the 2011 Mrs. Black North Carolina pageant crowned the state’s very first bald beauty queen. Sandra Dubose-Gibson, 37, lost all her hair at age 25 when she developed alopecia, an autoimmune disease that attacks the hair follicles. Sandra, who works as a singer and an inspirational speaker, says she wants to continue to spread her message of embracing inner beauty, which she found once she accepted that her hair did not define her. That’s the kind of pageant message I can actually get behind.

After the jump, check out a music video for her song “I’m Beautiful,” which shows Sandra venturing out in the world with a bald head for the very first time: Keep reading »
