Today’s Lady News: California Voters Polled On Female Politicians’ Hair

  • Pollster firm Public Policy Polling actually asked registered California voters whose hair they prefer more, Senator Barbara Boxer or her challenger, Carly Fiorina. Ugh. [Gawker]
  • Riot police in Cambodia beat female sweatshop workers when 3,000 of them went on strike yesterday. At least nine women were injured in the melee. The women work at a factory that creates garments for Gap, Benetton, Adidas, and Puma and claim they are paid less than $2 a day. [Daily Mail UK]
  • Lizz Winstead, co-creator of “The Daily Show,” laid the smackdown on feminist bloggers who have criticized the lack of women on-air at the show. “I get really frustrated when people claim that ‘The Daily Show’ is sexist when I’ve worked with Jon Stewart on four separate projects and he is the least sexist person ever,” Winstead said, “They’re not trying to not hire women, they’re trying to hire the best possible people for the show. You can call it a boy’s club, it’s not. It’s a nerd club.” [Bloggasm]

Carly Fiorina Thinks Barbara Boxer’s Hair Is “So Yesterday”

Former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina just won the Republication primary in California on Tuesday. Her first order of business? Cattily sniping about Senator Barbara Boxer’s hair when she didn’t realize her mic was on. While prepping for an on-camera interview, Fiorina said to a person off to her right, “A lot of us saw Barbara Boxer briefly on television this morning and said, ‘God, what is that hair?!’ Soooo yesterday!”

Someone must have told Fiorina to STFU off-screen because she suddenly piped down. Come on, Carly, even big-mouthed Joe Biden didn’t get caught on a live mic dissing Sarah Palin‘s ‘do with the title of a Hilary Duff song. [NYMag.com] Keep reading »

A Senator Is A Senator, Even If She’s Also A Lady

Wow, I know politicians fight dirty, but resorting to woman-on-woman sexism in campaign ads is pretty low. Carly Fiorina, the former CEO of Hewlett-Packard, is challenging current Senator Barbara Boxer for her Congressional seat. Fine and dandy, right? It’s actually pretty cool that one woman is challenging another woman for her seat.

But Fiorina’s campaign just sent out the most ridiculous that-lady-needs-to-be-put-in-her-place email I’ve ever read. To quote from the message (which I received through marketing emails from The Washington Times, a conservative-leaning newspaper in D.C.):

Barbara Boxer … disrespectfully demanded a Brigadier General refer to her as “Senator” instead of “ma’am” during a recent Senate hearing. I’m sure you’ll agree that Boxer’s arrogance and disrespect for our nation’s military leaders is way out of line.
