Last night, for the first time since he was elected president, Barack Obama appeared on “The Daily Show.” After making some small talk about the set, the two got down to brass tacks. Jon Stewart asked point blank, “Are we the people we were waiting for?” Obama responded carefully, “I’m feeling great about where the American people are considering what we’ve gone through. I know October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. But the 10th month of the year is another time for reflection on an issue that doesn’t get quite the attention it deserves: Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Barack Obama is all about science. And on December 8th, he’ll be appearing on “Mythbusters,” the Discovery Channel show that debunks urban legends using elaborate scientific testing. (My fave episode answered this question: Will jumping in a falling elevator really save your life?) In Barack’s episode, they’ll be looking into whether Archimedes could have set fire to the Roman float using just a mirror in the sun.

Michelle and Sasha Obama arrived back from their trip to Spain yesterday afternoon, and the whole trip has turned into a media circus. A columnist from The New York Daily News called Michelle the “modern-day Marie Antoinette” for going on a “glitzy Spanish vacation” while the country is in a recession. A Washington Times editor seconded that emotion, saying, “Obamas live the high life while America suffers.” And Rush Limbaugh made the truly bizarre accusation that the media was ignoring the lavish trip as reparations for “our slave past.”
