Michelle Obama? Fat? The woman whose toned upper-arms have headlined the 10 o’clock news? Who would dare say such a thing? In a cartoon on a conservative web site called BigGovernment.com, the First Lady and the president are depicted chowing down on dinner — she with a pile of hamburgers and French fries and he with a few lettuce leaves. The joke here, I guess, is that she’s a hypocrite because she actually eats junk food sometimes? I don’t get the joke. What’s offensive about the cartoon, though, is how Michelle Obama is drawn with pudgy jowls, and bulging arms, and snaps at Barack, “Shut up and pass the bacon!” According to the media watchdog group Media Matters For America, a previous version of the cartoon that appeared online had Michelle saying, “Shut up and pass the lard!” Keep reading »
You may have watched President Obama‘s “State of the Union” address in person. Me? I watched the first episode of season one of “Keeping Up With the Kardashians.” (It had been a long day.) Reading the “State of the Union” address online this morning, I’m once again proud of my president and the country I come from. But I was dismayed — a tiny bit surprised, even — to see no mention of women’s rights or women’s issues — or even women at all — in the “State of the Union.” As Courtney E. Martin put it, writing for Feministing, the speech was “sort of unremarkable to these feminist ears.” Keep reading »
The stress of being the most powerful leader in the Western world while attempting to rescue a fledgling economy, help millions of Americans who are out of work and end international conflict has to manifest somewhere.
For President Barack Obama — like so many of his White House predecessors — the job’s stresses have gone straight to his tresses.
The 49-year-old leader has been the first to acknowledge — and even joke about — his rapidly graying hair which has grown noticeably whiter since he assumed office two years ago. In fact, the salt-and-pepper look started during sleepless nights on the campaign trail. Continue reading… Keep reading »
Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, readers! Hopefully you have the day off to (sleep in and) do some sort of public service, but regardless, here is the full version of MLK’s legendary “I Have A Dream” speech. Keep reading »
Barack Obama will not be your Matthew McConaughey. (Dammit.) The White House has delivered “strict instructions” to the press pool not to use telescopic lenses to photograph the president on his vacation in Hawaii. Why must they protect his privacy so? According to The New York Times, the White House doesn’t want any “sneaky attempts to take pictures of a shirtless leader of the free world.” No shirtless Obama photos? Whaaaaat? Keep reading »
Another week, another inappropriate Rush Limbaugh comment. Yesterday on his radio show, the conservative talk show host was discussing the hot topic of the day: TSA airport pat-downs. “Do you know when Obama went swimming with his daughter to show it was safe, during the oil spill?” He asked. “How about taking his daughter through [an airport] screening? How about Obama take [sic] his daughter to the airport and have a TSA grope her (emphasis mine), go through the exact routine with Obama’s daughter that everybody’s else’s daughter goes through, just to show it’s safe for everybody. Like he did in the Gulf with the oil spill.” Ew!
Oh, but it gets worse: Mike Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor, also weighed in on “Fox News” with creepy comments about pat-downs on the bodies of the women in the First Family… Keep reading »
