Today, in a 54-to-46 vote, the Senate voted against a compromised proposal that would have expanded background checks on firearm sales. This, despite the fact that the vast majority of Americans, including card-carrying NRA members, supported the measure. The parents of many of the children killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, four months ago sat in the room as the Senate voted. Above, President Obama reacts to the vote and has some strong words for those politicians who voted against the proposal, calling it “a shameful day for Washington.” But he’s also clear that this fight is not over. (The playlist above breaks Obama’s remarks into two parts.)
A letter containing a “suspicious substance” was sent to President Obama and intercepted at the White House’s off-site mail center, according to the Secret Service. It arrived yesterday, the same day as a letter addressed to a Mississippi Republican Sen. Roger Wicker that tested positive for ricin, CNN reports. A second letter sent to the US Senate has also been intercepted and is being tested for the poison, the AP reports; Terry Moran of ABC News tweets that that second letter also tested positive. (Police reportedly have a suspect in mind in the case of the letter sent to Wicker.) Read more on Newser…
“You have to be careful to, first of all, say she is brilliant and she is dedicated and she is tough, and she is exactly what you’d want in anybody who is administering the law, and making sure that everybody is getting a fair shake. She also happens to be by far the best-looking attorney general in the country — Kamala Harris is here. It’s true! C’mon … And she is a great friend and has just been a great supporter for many, many years. She’s brilliant and she’s dedicated.”
This is how President Barack Obama introduced California Attorney General Kamala Harris at a fundraiser in CA yesterday — high praise, to be sure, but the “best-looking” comment is a touch too far.
I have many feelings about this. One is that it was a stupid gaffe, but not surprising: Obama may be more of a feminist than any president in history, but he still lives in the same sexist society that the rest of us do. It’s a society where he once called a female reporter “sweetie” and where a woman’s appearance is seen as something men are entitled to comment publicly upon, even in a professional setting. Michelle Obama was on “Entertainment Tonight” last night—so, needless to say, the interview covered such hard-hitting topics as her husband’s “swag” and her bangs, Mediaite reports. Asked what it’s like to be married to a “sex symbol,” Obama replied of her husband, “He’s got a little swag, you know. That’s OK. I mean, I’m proud of him. He’s a stylish, I think, man who is healthy and he’s smart and he’s passionate and he’s inspiring. And who wouldn’t fall in love with that, you know?” Read more…
The Obamas dressed up in their Sunday best to attend an Easter church service in DC, and as usual, I’m totally in awe of this gorgeous family. Sasha and Malia looked beautiful (and age-appropriate) in their colorful Easter dresses, while the divine Mrs. O opted for a Prabal Gurung dress she’s worn a couple times before. Well played, Obama family! [Photo: Getty]
