After three weeks in New York, London, and Milan, we’ve finally made it to Paris. Many of the most important shows of the season just so happen to run in Paris — you might even be able to say that the city is the original home of the industry itself. The coming week is a glorious show-filled doozy, so ready your Style.com account and your computer’s zoom feature. We’re covering the past 3 days with Alexis Mabille, Dries Van Noten, Rochas, Ann Demeulemeester, Balmain, and Alexander Wang’s debut collection at the house of Balenciaga. Let’s see how it turned out… Keep reading »
An all-too-common complaint about fashion designers today is that they don’t produce clothes in nearly enough sizes. Size and weight are similarly loaded subjects within the industry, and fashion’s apparent favoritism towards the thin and thinner is hardly unchartered topical territory. The house of Balenciaga, newly helmed by Alexander Wang following beloved creative director Nicolas Ghesquière’s sudden departure after 15 years at the brand, currently dresses typically-sized starlets like Kristen Stewart, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, et al. Last week, I raved about this amaaazing hot pink/olive green combo that Katie Holmes wore to the studio to film an appearance on Late Night with David Letterman. Commenter nomnombacon fell in love with Katie’s gorgeous military-inspired jacket, and can you blame her? It’s such a gorgeous piece. Julie and I did some digging and discovered that the exact coat Katie’s wearing is Balenciaga, which means it costs roughly as much as a vacation home in the Bahamas, but don’t worry–we found three alternative options that aren’t exactly cheap, but much more accessible than the original. Check ‘em out after the jump, and if you have a Style 911 question, email me at email@example.com! Keep reading »
I love seeing Kristen Stewart in more androgynous high-fashion looks — they almost always suit the tomboyish “Twilight” star better than the usual glam red carpet fare, and let’s face it, the girl can rock a pair of weird pants like no other… for the most part. At an “On The Road” event this weekend, Kristen chose this sort of bra top for aliens and a pretty unfortunate pair of pleated trousers, creating, like, the most unflattering crotch situation this side of harem pants. Her makeup artist, who is usually on point, also dropped the ball on this one, overwhelming the actress’s delicate features with rich, heavy eyes and lips. Keep reading »
Nevermind that this thing is demonstrably out of our price range, this faux leather Balenciaga jacket weighs seven pounds! Seven pounds! Who wants to walk around with seven extra pounds of fabric and tickety-tackity trimmings on them all day? [Style] Keep reading »
We make allowances for certain things from our childhood to revisit our wardrobes, but we’re not sure if Play-Doh fits in. These heels from Balenciaga‘s spring collection are inspired by Play-Doh and made out of a crazy mixed material meant to resemble the kids’ toy. What’s in it? Melted strips of different colored leathers (we didn’t even know you could melt leather, but OK), which are then laser-compressed and hardened. Funnily enough, designer Nicolas Ghesquière was quoted describing his shoes as “like Play-Doh,” which got misinterpreted, leading some people to believe they’re actually made out of the smushy dough.
What do you think of this Balenciaga bootie? Play-Do? Or Play-Don’t? [TrendHunter, Style.com] Keep reading »
If you’re a lover of lady mags like we are, then you’ve probably noticed advertisements for Balenciaga Paris in almost every April issue. It’s kind of difficult to get the full effect with those paper fragrance testers so I got my hands on an actual bottle of this new scent. My first thought after the first spritz was: “old money.” Keep reading »
Apparently, fashion icon and famous editor of French Vogue Carine Roitfeld has been “blacklisted” by Balenciaga. Reports WWD:
They were barred from the show. ‘We’re blacklisted,’ Roitfeld said with a shrug at Nina Ricci later in the day. ‘It’s too bad, it’s a beautiful house and it’s French. I hope that it’s not forever.’ She noted Balenciaga no longer advertises in the magazine or lends it clothes, but stopped short of giving any reason for the rift. ‘Ask them,’ she offered. A Balenciaga spokesman declined comment.”
Quel scandale! If anything, it seems only the reverse situation would occur, where the almighty Vogue would cut off a relationship with a designer. Maybe they were offended by Carine’s pantsless behavior?
In other random Carine news, her mag threw their Fashion Week party last night in Paris and had a special cocktail in honor of Roitfeld called “Carine’s Tea Time.” In it was vodka, green tea syrup, and a minty/floral water. Hey, Carine, is that low-cal? Sounds kind of tasty. [WWD, Twitter] Keep reading »
