Two-Toned Lips At Nanette Lepore

The beauty at Nanette Lepore’s fall 2010 show was inspired by women in Renaissance paintings, but makeup artist Makky’s two-toned lips look anything but old-fashioned. He applied MAC Cosmetics’ MAC PRO lipstick in Charred Red, a dark burgundy, to the bottom lip. Then, he put Odyssey, a bright fuchsia, on the top. While Makky doesn’t recommend wearing this out on the street as-is, he suggested using two different (but not quite this different) colors for a similar effect. Just make sure to put the darker color on the bottom lip, because otherwise, he told us, your top lip will look thin. Good to know. Keep reading »

Totally Sexy, Totally Wearable Hair At Zac Posen

Backstage at Zac Posen, Odile Gilbert (seriously, one of the most amazing hairstylists of our time) performed a feat by combining urban long hair chic with Posen’s ’40s-inspired collection. “We wanted to create a simple yet sexy look this season that is very wearable,” Odile said. “Zac and I talked about how influential the downtown scene is and it felt like a great fit with his clothes to have long wavy hair with some body to it. The results were really beautiful hair that bounced as the models walked the runway.” But it’s not just a runway-friendly look; it’s also perfect for a night out. Here’s how to get the look. Lipstick Is Key At Erin Fetherston

Super cute Erin Fetherston is one of the sweetest designers I can think of, so it’s no wonder hairstylist Odile Gilbert told me that the designer herself was the inspiration for the hair as she placed blunt bangs — Erin’s signature style — over the models’ foreheads. MAC makeup artist Lucia Pica had another muse in mind: 1970s icon Nico of the Velvet Underground. She said she wanted the girls to “look very healthy and glowing, as if they have been running in the fields,” you know, with a little Vaseline on the lens. To get the look, she massaged the models’ skin, which “really gets the blood flowing,” a trick I may or may not employ ASAP to make my complexion look a little less Fashion Week-y. Then she regaled me with another revelation: She created the entire look using only lipstick. She used MAC lipstick in Fearless on the cheeks, explaining that the oils in a lipstick help to blend into the skin and lend an exceptionally natural-looking glow. Using a shadow brush, she swept a bronze-y brown-hued MAC lippy called Cocochino over the girls’ lids, finishing the look with a dab of clear gloss on the inner corners of the eyes to make them dewy-looking. It was gorgeous and inspiring — I think I’ll lock myself in my boudoir with a tube of lipstick and see what happens. Ahem. Keep reading »

Prabal Gurung Does The Robot

I ran into MAC makeup artist and our Kiki T‘s pal Stevie Huynh backstage at Nepalese designer Prabal Gurung’s show, and I can’t think of any prettier makeup I’ve seen so far. Stevie was all about creating the most gorgeous skin to match Prabal’s time of the Android aesthetic, and he really did create an otherworldly look. He used MAC Strobe Liquid to build glowing, iridescent complexions on the models –”I’m going for a hyper-real quality,” he said — then blended MAC Pigments in Vanilla and White for super pronounced highlights on their foreheads and cheekbones. The finishing touch? A Cherry Lip Pencil with red powder pigment patted on top.

Bumble and Bumble hairstylist Jimmy Paul wanted the hair to be “aggressive, scary and shocking,” so he used Bumble’s Holding Spray to tease hair into smooth, sculptural faux-hawks. The whole futuristic angle must have made sense for “Avatar” star Zoe Saldana, whom we spotted perched in the front row. A closer look, after the jump … Keep reading »
