Confessions Of A Regretful Gender Studies Student

I have a lot of regrets about my college education.

I regret that tuition was $40,000 a year, so that my classmates were mostly rich, white kids. I regret that I am paying back thousands in student loans. I regret that my journalism program forced me to take an introductory class on reporting, even though I’d already written articles for my hometown newspaper for two years. I regret that I took two different photography classes, but haven’t snapped a single freakin’ photo since. I regret that I wasted time, money, and precious sanity on a required math class that gave me the anxiety attacks of your worst nightmares.

And most of all, I regret that I took as many gender and sexuality studies courses as I did. Keep reading »

Marc Jacobs Does Back To School, Too

Here’s a guaranteed way to secure your place as the coolest kid in school: Show up the first day with designer supplies by Marc Jacobs (watch out, Lisa Frank). Following the launch of his bookstore in NYC’s West Village (adorably named Bookmarc), MJ has created a small collection of back-to-school supplies in a similar bookish theme. Stock your desk with colored pencils, notebook-like storage tins, or even Marc Jacobs-branded Sharpies. Better yet, get the whole kit ‘n kaboodle with one of the pouches pre-filled with colorful pencils, pens, paper clips, erasers, and other note-taking accoutrement. Luckily, the prices aren’t that outlandish. The kits are $11-17, a plastic case with mini-colored pencils is $8, and a simple pack of red pencils is $9, which, OK is a lot to pay for pencils. But, small change for all the Gossip Girls out there.

“The girl who eats her feelings” is a new trend-setting clique to emulate, says W magazine’s recent piece on back-to-school style. If they were trying to describe the trend of wearing “curve-enhancing dresses worn with plenty of attitude,” why would they call that dressing like “the girl who eats her feelings”? That’s just … being curvy. Keep reading »
