Oh Noes! Ladies Are Losing Their Lady-Skills Like Cooking And Cleaning!

Whatever will the menfolk do?! Us modern hussies not only paint our lips and wear britches, but we’re losing our valuable lady skills too. There’s a study out of the Courier-Mail newspaper in Australia about how women under 30 are losing “female” skills, like cooking, cleaning and sewing. Only 20 percent of women under 30 surveyed said they could bake a cake and only 51 percent could cook a roast. Women of the Baby Boomer generation, however, said 85 percent could cook a roast and 45 percent could bake a cake.

I have never in my life needed to bake a cake or cook a roast. You know what? I don’t care to learn. But here is a list of more modern “womanly” skills the women of The Frisky do possess, which are a helluva lot more important: Keep reading »

Are We Too Nostalgic?

This week, New York Times writer David Browne argued that Generation Y is all about nostalgia—and that we develop sentimental feelings about things at a much more rapid pace than Baby Boomers. I fully admit that even at the young age of 21, I feel nostalgic for my childhood all the time. And haven’t we all? At The Frisky alone, we’ve reminisced recently about Zack Morris, Jem and the Holograms, our favorite kids TV show hosts, and even our favorite childhood dolls. But I’m not running to trade in my iPod for a Walkman or my flat iron for scrunchies. I just enjoy a trip down memory lane. And because I’m young, my memory lane doesn’t go on for miles and miles. We Don’t Want To Be Like Our Parents

It used to be that people followed in their parents’ footsteps, career-wise. If your dad was an ophthalmologist, you became an ophthalmologist, and so on, but things are changing. In part, this is because the apprenticeship system has changed, but mostly younger generations are choosing their own profession because the “do what you love” mentality has been adopted by the last few decades. “The whole idea that work should be fun is something that was invented by the baby boomer generation,” said Jenny Ungless, a career coach at Monster.com. But parents sometimes don’t even want their kids to follow in their footsteps. One-third of male lawyers in a survey by a U.K. recruiting firm said they didn’t want their kids to have the same job as them. And some jobs — like mine — didn’t even exist until a few years ago. Baby Boomers Like Sex

Apparently sex gets better as you get older. Forty-six percent of the 1,000 adults born between 1946 and 1964 who were surveyed by Lavalife said they enjoyed sex more now than they did in their 20s and 30s. It’s nice to hear that these older people (i.e., our parents) are enjoying themselves, because of the 85 million baby boomers in North America, about 30 percent are single. But these boomers are also a little more promiscuous than the generation below them. Thirty-four percent of those polled by Lavalife said they’d have sex on a first date, compared with 17 percent of singles born between 1965 and 1982. Oh, and a quarter of sexually active boomers were open to threesomes. [Reuters] Keep reading »
