Aziz Ansari’s Analogy For Why He’s A Feminist Is Simple And Perfect

Aziz Ansari's Analogy For Why He's A Feminist Is Simple And Perfect
"It's so weirdly used in our culture."

“If you look up feminism in the dictionary, it just means that men and women have equal rights. And I feel like everyone here believes men and women have equal rights. But I think the reason people don’t clap is that word is so weirdly used in our culture. … People think feminist means like, ‘some woman is gonna start yelling at them. … If you believe that men and women have equal rights, if someone asks if you’re feminist, you have to say yes because that is how words work. You can’t be like, ‘Oh yeah, I’m a doctor that primarily does diseases of the skin.’ Oh, so you’re a dermatologist? ‘Oh no, that’s way too aggressive of a word! No no not at all not at all.’”

While I don’t think feminism needs to be centered around men, I’m certainly happy to see anyone who understands its basic definition embrace the label, including funny dudes like Aziz Ansari. There are definitely more complex aspects to feminism beyond just “men and women should have equal rights,” and feminists disagree with each other plenty, but Ansari’s analogy (shared on last night’s “Late Show with David Letterman”) for why we shouldn’t be scared to use the word or identify as such is spot on. Aziz Ansari’s “Friday Night Lights” Super Bowl Was Better Than The Real Super Bowl

I mean, just about anything was more exciting than last night’s Super Bowl, but Aziz Ansari‘s random decision to livetweet an imaginary Super Bowl between the Dillon Panthers and the East Dillon Lions — from “Friday Night Lights” — was legitimately entertaining. Some of the cast members of the show even got in on the fun. Scott Porter, who played Jason Street on “FNL,” tweeted the above photo, alongside Michael B. Jordan, who played Vince Howard. Comedian Aziz Ansari On The Ridiculousness Of Marriage

Comedian Aziz Ansari On The Ridiculousness Of Marriage
"This is really strange. Why are we doing this?"

One of the exaggerations/white lies I’ve been known to tell more than a few times is that I basically discovered comedian Aziz Ansari, aka Tom Haverford on “Parks and Recreation.” See, back in, like, 2005, I was working at Maxim magazine and one of the pages I edited was the Jokes page. Each issue we spotlighted an up-and-coming comedian and one month, I picked Aziz. I think it was the first bit of big press he got, but I might be making that up, and then after that, it was all dollah dollah bills for Aziz. Anyway, Aziz’s latest project is a Netflix standup comedy special called “Buried Alive,” in which Aziz focuses his funny on issues related to dating and marriage. Above, Aziz, in his typically LOUD FASHION, tackles the absurdity of marriage itself. “Buried Alive” will be available on Netflix on November 1. [via Feministing]

Some standup comedians — okay, probably only Russell Brand — are swimming in tail, while others aren’t sure how to find a sexual partner without sounding like you deserve a blowjob just because you’re on TV. In this preview clip for a $5 standup special available on his website, “Parks and Rec” star Aziz Ansari wants us to believe he is in the latter category. Somehow, I have a hard time believing the only people who freak out around him are bros. [YouTube]

“My perfect date night: I pick you up. In my Kia Sorrento. You get in. There’s candles in the car. You go, ‘…Is that dangerous?’ and I go, ‘Yes—but I like danger.’

We go to your favorite restaurant, and we have a fantastic meal. We come outside and we see my car’s on fire. You go, ‘Aziz, your car’s on fire. Aren’t you upset?’ I pull out a bag of marshmallows and I go, ‘No. I knew this was gonna happen.’

And then I kiss you. In front of my burning car.”
