9 Golden Globe Nominations Surprises

It’s been a pretty exciting year for movies, what with “Black Swan,” “Blue Valentine,” “Catfish,” “The Social Network, ” etc, etc. So, when the Golden Globe Awards announced its nominees this morning, guess which flick got the most nods? “The King’s Speech.” Yep, the movie none of us saw starring Colin Firth and Helena Bonham Carter.

The “Golden Globe” nominations are often a little wacky, so after the jump, eight more things that surprised us. Keep reading »

10 Reasons We’re Thrilled That Chelsea Handler Is Hosting The VMAs

Last night, the amazing Chelsea Handler announced that she will be hosting this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, coming at you live from Los Angeles on September 12th. Why is she the perfect person for the gig? “This has been a huge year for hip-hop and rap, and it is well-known that I have the closest ties with these communities—musically and sexually,” Chelsea joked. “I am to rap and hippity-hop what Warren Buffet is to finance, minus the sex.” [EW]

We are insanely giddy over this news because we love Chelsea. After the jump, 10 reasons we’re thrilled MTV made this pick. Keep reading »

Carrie Underwood Reclaims Her Throne At The CMT Awards

Taylor Swift may be the princess of country music, but Carrie Underwood proved she was the not-that-much-older queen at last night’s CMT Music Awards. The former “American Idol” left the fan-voted show with two prizes, including the top honor of “Video of the Year” for her song “Cowboy Casanova.” This is the second time she has won the award—she won in 2007 for “Before He Cheats,” one of my biggest guilty pleasure songs of all time. But in that two-year gap, Swift dominated the awards, taking home the top prize wins for “Our Song” and “Love Story.” Many expected the teen would have another big year at the CMTs with “You Belong With Me.” But instead, Swift left empty-handed. Which might be a first for the songstress who usually leaves award shows clutching a fistful of trophies. Underwood’s double win made her the biggest prize winner at this year’s show. Other winners included Miranda Lambert’s first win with “White Liar” for best female video, while Keith Urban took home the male version of the award with his video “‘Til Summer Comes Around.” [CMT]

Who do you think is country music’s “it girl” — Taylor Swift or Carrie Underwood? Keep reading »

Black Eyed Peas Accidentally Given Best International Group Award

At France’s NRJ music awards show yesterday, the Black Eyed Peas were, uh, accidentally announced as the winners of Best International Group. But no one came on stage to pick up the award—I guess even the Peas themselves were not under the illusion that they’re “best group” caliber. The presenters realized their mistake and re-awarded the prize to German band Tokio Hotel. The Black Eyed Peas did win the award for best international song for “I Gotta Feeling” though, so that was hopefully some consolation. [NY Daily News]

I feel kinda bad for the Black Eyed Peas. It’s kinda like that time when my mom wanted me to cry in a home movie, so she gave me a biscuit and then took it away from me. But at least they’re not the only ones who’ve been falsely awarded. After the jump are some award snafus from the past. Keep reading »

A Soused Mariah Carey Gives An Acceptance Speech

For those of you who want to yack at cutesy, faux-surprised award show acceptance speeches (still irritated over that Julia Roberts one 10 years ago), Mariah Carey accepting the Breakthrough Actress Award at the Palm Springs Film Festival must have seemed like a breath of fresh (and probably drunk) air. First Mariah hugs her presenter for an uncomfortably long time, before making a joke about kittens/cotton. Then she says, “Please forgive me, because I’m a little bit, um …” Aww, I think this is sweet. [SF Gate]

Jenna Jameson Retires From Porn. Sniff.

Big news in the porn world, ladies. Jenna Jameson, star of such films as Briana Loves Jenna and Blue Movie, announced at the Adult Video News Awards Ceremony in Las Vegas this weekend that she was retiring from porn, telling the crowd, “I will never spread my legs for this industry again.” I couldn’t really give a hoot, but what I absolutely love about this video of the event is A) Jenna’s whole Dorothy Gale in Oz romanticism on getting into porn at 18 and B) the absolutely ludicrous amount of nominees up for the award she’s presenting. Literally, there are 15 nominees for “Crossover Star Of the Year” — who didn’t get nominated? Also, what is a crossover star? Did one of these people — Lexington Steele, maybe? — make an appearance on Grey’s Anatomy or something? So confused. [YouTube] Keep reading »
