Talk about being an older mom. Zsa Zsa Gabor may just become one at the ripe age of … 94. Zsa Zsa has had a ton of health problems this year—from a hip replacement to an amputated leg—and now her husband (amazingly, her ninth), Prince Frederic von Anhalt, has hatched a plan for another medical procedure. Using an egg donor, artificial insemination and a surrogate, he wants to father Zsa Zsa’s baby. “I’ve gone through the initial steps of donor matching and blood work and next week the donation process will begin,” he said. “I’m a retired guy. But it’s hardly about monetary gain, which makes it all the more strange. Basically, there’s a new kind of sperm donor popping up who just wants to help single ladies, lesbians and infertile couples make babies, since a vial of sperm and insemination by a doctor can cost about $2,000 a pop. Swedish Lesbians Hogging The Sperm Bank Stockpile

When my boyfriend IM’d me something called “Swedish Lesbians Suck Sperm Banks Dry,” I initially thought he was just horny. But, lo and behold, it’s actually an article about how more lesbian couples in Sweden are using donor sperm from fertility clinics for artificial inseminations. In fact, one Swedish hospital reported an 18-month backlog for baby juice! In a roundabout way, the spike in lesbians at sperm banks is good news: Swedish law changed in 2005 to allow gay women the right to fertility treatments at the country’s hospitals. Carmen Bousada, the world’s oldest mom, recently passed away from cancer at age 69. The Spanish mama conceived twin boys via donor eggs and artificial insemination, despite having gone through menopause 18 years earlier. How did a lady her age get knocked up in the first place? Bousada lied to an L.A. fertility clinic and pretended to be 55-years-old, not 67.

D.C. Pandas Can’t Conceive Naturally, Get Help

Sure, all anyone is talking about these days relating to Washington, D.C., is the inauguration, but there are other things going on in our nation’s capital. Like giant pandas trying to make babies. Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, two giant panda’s at the National Zoo, tried to mate throughout the day last Thursday without success. “Because competent mating did not occur,” a statement from the zoo said, vets had to insert some of Tian Tian’s semen into Mei Xiang’s uterus. You might be thinking that these kids just need a few more days of love-making, but, unfortunately, scientists believe giant pants are able to conceive only one or two days a year. And while the couple have successfully given birth to one baby panda, in 2005, they weren’t so lucky in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2007, and 2008.   • Two black-footed ferrets at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo gave birth to “kits” (baby ferrets). The really interesting part of this story is that the kits fathers are both dead — one died in 1999 and the other in 2000. Since the species is endangered, the female ferrets were artificially inseminated with frozen semen from the dead males. [LiveScience]
