Would You Dye Your Armpit Hair?

Dyed armpit hair is being touted as a hot new trend, but if a square morning news program has picked it up and most of their source images are from Tumblr, I’m going to assume this has actually been around for quite a while. KTLA News claims the trend started at a Seattle salon after a photo of a client who received a pit dye job went viral. Not surprisingly, the news anchors are rude and judgey about it, but why the hell not dye your pits? While I’m more of a shaving gal for the time being, I’m loving the neon aesthetic. Have you done this? Would you?

It all started–as many revolutions do–with a school librarian. Lina Ehrin, a 32-year-old librarian from central Sweden, was in the audience of a national Swedish singing contest when TV cameras captured a shot of her cheering wildly with her arms raised–armpit hair clearly exposed. A fan of the show posted a screengrab of Lina on Facebook, which quickly racked up thousands of angry comments declaring Lina dirty, ugly, and disgusting for choosing not to shave her pits. To combat the hate, a group of young activists created a Facebook event page called Ta Håret Tillbaka! (Take the Hair Back!), where people could voice their support for Lina and post photos of their own body hair. With over 15,000 members and hundreds of photos shared, the movement is quickly gaining momentum. Lina, for one, is shocked at the attention: “I mean, there are wars going on in the world, yet crazy people are sitting here commenting on this … I can’t believe a little bit of hair on a woman is such a big thing.”

So, what do you think of this personal grooming drama? Do you shave your armpits? How often?  Would you ever put down your razor to make a statement? [Vice]

Look, I went to a women’s college (Mount Holyoke!) for a year, and I saw a lot of hairy things. I don’t judge. But for myself, I choose to shave as often as I am in the shower, which is just about every day. I understand that not everyone is like this, however, and in the case of Terry Richardson consort and maybe-model Charlotte Free (pictured) it looks like it’s been a couple of weeks. That got us wondering…

Teenage Madonna Deflected Boys With Her Armpit Hair

“Going to high school, I saw how popular girls had to behave to get the boys. I knew I couldn’t fit into that. So I decided to do the opposite. I refused to wear makeup, to have a hairstyle. I refused to shave. I had hairy armpits.”

Madonna explains what she was like as a teenage girl before she became the international superstar she is today. I did not have to grow out my armpit hair in order to keep the boys away. My impressive array of acne did that! [Crushable]

Shaving Your Armpits Was A Huge New Trend In 1915

The fairer sex didn’t always have to spend time grooming their underarm area. Women didn’t shave their pits before about 1915 because no one ever saw that part of their body. According to Mental Floss, even the word “underarm” was considered scandalous before that time. But then designers cooked up a dress without sleeves, and an ad in Harper’s Bazaar said that to wear the style, women first needed to attend to “the removal of objectionable hair.” And we all got out our razors.
