Look, I went to a women’s college (Mount Holyoke!) for a year, and I saw a lot of hairy things. I don’t judge. But for myself, I choose to shave as often as I am in the shower, which is just about every day. I understand that not everyone is like this, however, and in the case of Terry Richardson consort and maybe-model Charlotte Free (pictured) it looks like it’s been a couple of weeks. Shaving Your Armpits Was A Huge New Trend In 1915

The fairer sex didn’t always have to spend time grooming their underarm area. Women didn’t shave their pits before about 1915 because no one ever saw that part of their body. According to Mental Floss, even the word “underarm” was considered scandalous before that time. But then designers cooked up a dress without sleeves, and an ad in Harper’s Bazaar said that to wear the style, women first needed to attend to “the removal of objectionable hair.” And we all got out our razors. Armpit hair is a part of all of our lives, however annoying it may be. Most of us choose to get rid of it by regularly shaving our underarms, but, you know, sometimes we forget. Luckily, shaving only slips our mind in the winter when we’re wearing long sleeves and it doesn’t matter as much. Celebrities who have premieres to attend in strapless dresses aren’t as fortunate — and things have gotten worse for them over the years. It used to be that the press only made a big deal about armpit hair if it was European-style long. But now, with fancy cameras and Photoshop, we can tell when someone has even a tiny bit of stubble.
