You guys, meet Janet Howell, a Democratic Virginia State Senator who is my new hero. Howell was disgusted by a new bill that would require women to undergo an ultrasound before having an abortion, so she decided to protest it in a decidedly unique way. She attached an amendment to that bill that would also require men to have a rectal exam and a cardiac stress test before obtaining a prescription for erectile dysfunction medication. Keep reading »
A North Carolina politician sent an email to all his colleagues calling for “public hangings” of abortion providers as a deterrent. Republican Rep. Larry Pittman wrote in an email:
“We need to make the death penalty a real deterrent again by actually carrying it out. Every appeal that can be made should have to be made at one time, not in a serial manner. If murderers (and I would include abortionists, rapists, and kidnappers, as well) are actually executed, it will at least have the deterrent effect upon them. For my money, we should go back to public hangings, which would be more of a deterrent to others, as well.”
This is all kinds of crazy that I don’t even know where to start. Comparing abortion providers — a safe, legal, at times life-saving medical practice — to murderers, rapists and kidnappers? Suggesting public hangings as a cost-saving measure? Hell, why not go whole hog and whip out the guillotine? Keep reading »
Anti-abortion extremists ruin everything — and not just what should have been a visit to Planned Parenthood for a super-fun Pap smear.
Forty cities across the United States could air graphic anti-choice commercials depicting bloody, aborted fetuses during pigskin’s holiest of days, the Super Bowl. The ads would be paid for by Randall Terry, who runs an extremist anti-abortion group called Operation Rescue and is also vying for the Democratic presidential nomination. The ads will obviously be graphic in content, which is usually a no-no. But stations cannot deny Randall Terry from airing them due to a Federal Election Commission rule that forbids candidates’ ads from airing within 45 days of an election, including primary elections. He is now taking donations on his website to buy airtime for these graphic and emotionally manipulative commercials (which you can view on his web site, should it strike your fancy).
Sadly, Randall Terry’s bloody, aborted fetuses are not the first time Super Bowl Sunday airtime has been exploited for political gain. Keep reading »
I don’t think it’s anyone’s business to tell parents who have suffered a miscarriage how to behave. People express grief in all sorts of ways, even ways you might consider distasteful. That said, a video message to miscarried baby Jubilee Shalom Duggar strikes me as pro-life messaging first and foremost. “So often in society, babies are looks on as a problem, trial or responsibility,” mama Michelle Duggar reads, “but God says babies are a blessing. We do not believe that babies are a bother or a headache, a financial drainer or a career interrupter.” What a lovely way to honor Jubiliee: by guilt-tripping other women who have terminated unwanted pregnancies! Presented without comment, “The Life Zone,” a pro-life horror film about “pregnant women kidnapped from abortion clinics and forced to give birth,” starring Robert Loggia. New Jerseyites can check it out currently at the Hoboken International Film Festival. The rest of us will have to wait until it’s picked up by Fox News, I suppose.

Buying a pregnancy test can be awkward anywhere you live, but especially if you live in a community where everybody knows everybody. No wonder some women are happy to receive a free pregnancy test online, mailed to their house in a discreet package. But as one user of Gurl.com’s message boards recently found out, the pee-stick from OneFreePregnancyTest.com came at a price: judgment! Yes, her free pregnancy test came in the mail when anti-abortion literature that began:
“Hi mom, Will you let me breathe?
Oh, brother. Keep reading »
Anti-abortion group The American Life League has released a new video in support of Congress defunding Planned Parenthood and it wants you to think that a doctor scraping an eight-week-old bunch of cells from a uterus is just like slaughtering a cute animal in a blender. Yep, a person dressed in hospital scrubs places a bunny in a blender, the screen goes black, the blender whirs, and the camera pans to a several-months-old Caucasian baby. Nuanced! My first thought was something that my Token Pro-Life Catholic Friend said to me about how he is against abortion because it’s “an act of violence.” Huh? I don’t see women’s health supporters using imagery so cruel. [YouTube via Feministing] Keep reading »
Two fetuses — er, “unborn children,” as anti-abortion folks call them — testified in Ohio today regarding a bill that would criminalize abortion after a fetal heartbeat can be detected.
Very funny, Ohio. Keep reading »
A committee in South Dakota‘s House of Representatives has passed a bill that would broaden the legal definition of “justifiable homicide” to include murders done to prevent harm to a fetus — like abortion — which reproductive rights advocates believe is a way to legalize the killing of abortion providers.
Dr. George Tiller, the late-term abortion provider who was murdered in May 2009 at his church in Kansas by an anti-abortion extremist — who later tried to use “the necessity defense” because he genuinely believed he was “saving babies” — is rolling over in his grave right now. Keep reading »
