Virginia politicians advanced two extreme and extremely disturbing anti-abortion bills yesterday — Valentine’s Day, for God’s sake! One is a so-called “fetal personhood” amendment, which would criminalize all abortions by declaring that a fertilized egg is a person.

The state’s Republican-controlled House of Delegates overwhelmingly passed the “fetal personhood” bill, which now heads to the state Senate. If the bill passes the state Senate and is signed into law by Republican Governor Bob McDonnell, it would be the most sweeping criminalization of abortion in the United States. Keep reading »

Yesterday, cancer survivors, their loved ones, and loved ones of those who succumbed to the disease, reeled to learn that Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the charity synonymous with breast cancer research, halted grants to Planned Parenthood.

The charity caved to pressure from anti-abortion activists who have the nationwide clinics under investigation at the behest of an anti-abortion politician (more about that here). Another factor is surely the hiring of Komen’s senior VP for Public Policy, Karen Handel, an ex-politician who ran unsuccessfully for governor of Georgia in 2010 on an anti-abortion platform and was endorsed by Sarah Palin (more on that here).

Despite the fact Susan G. Komen’s grants to Planned Parenthood mainly were used for breast exams for women who otherwise could not afford them, anti-abortion groups have targeted those charitable donations because some Planned Parenthood clinics also perform abortions.

But enough about ideology trumping ethics. What are we going to do about it? Keep reading »

Hero Of The Week: Virginia State Senator Janet Howell Attaches A Rectal Exam Amendment To Anti-Abortion Bill

You guys, meet Janet Howell, a Democratic Virginia State Senator who is my new hero. Howell was disgusted by a new bill that would require women to undergo an ultrasound before having an abortion, so she decided to protest it in a decidedly unique way. She attached an amendment to that bill that would also require men to have a rectal exam and a cardiac stress test before obtaining a prescription for erectile dysfunction medication. Keep reading »

A North Carolina politician sent an email to all his colleagues calling for “public hangings” of abortion providers as a deterrent.  Republican Rep. Larry Pittman wrote in an email:

“We need to make the death penalty a real deterrent again by actually carrying it out. Every appeal that can be made should have to be made at one time, not in a serial manner. If murderers (and I would include abortionists, rapists, and kidnappers, as well) are actually executed, it will at least have the deterrent effect upon them. For my money, we should go back to public hangings, which would be more of a deterrent to others, as well.”

This is all kinds of crazy that I don’t even know where to start. Comparing abortion providers — a safe, legal, at times life-saving medical practice — to murderers, rapists and kidnappers? Suggesting public hangings as a cost-saving measure? Hell, why not go whole hog and whip out the guillotine? Keep reading »

Anti-abortion extremists ruin everything — and not just what should have been a visit to Planned Parenthood for a super-fun Pap smear.

Forty cities across the United States could air graphic anti-choice commercials depicting bloody, aborted fetuses during pigskin’s holiest of days, the Super Bowl. The ads would be paid for by Randall Terry, who runs an extremist anti-abortion group called Operation Rescue and is also vying for the Democratic presidential nomination. The ads will obviously be graphic in content, which is usually a no-no. But stations cannot deny Randall Terry from airing them due to a Federal Election Commission rule that forbids candidates’ ads from airing within 45 days of an election, including primary elections. He is now taking donations on his website to buy airtime for these graphic and emotionally manipulative commercials (which you can view on his web site, should it strike your fancy).

Sadly, Randall Terry’s bloody, aborted fetuses are not the first time Super Bowl Sunday airtime has been exploited for political gain. Keep reading »

I don’t think it’s anyone’s business to tell parents who have suffered a miscarriage how to behave. People express grief in all sorts of ways, even ways you might consider distasteful. That said, a video message to miscarried baby Jubilee Shalom Duggar strikes me as pro-life messaging first and foremost. “So often in society, babies are looks on as a problem, trial or responsibility,” mama Michelle Duggar reads, “but God says babies are a blessing. We do not believe that babies are a bother or a headache, a financial drainer or a career interrupter.” What a lovely way to honor Jubiliee: by guilt-tripping other women who have terminated unwanted pregnancies! Today’s Lady News: Rick Perry Signs Anti-Abortion Pledge

  • Republican presidential nominee wannabe Rick Perry signed an anti-abortion pledge with several scary provisions: were he to be elected he would nominate anti-abortion judges, appoint only anti-abortion appointees, push to defund Planned Parenthood, and sign something called the “Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act,” which is about a scientifically sound as an episode of “Dr. Who.” [Think Progress]

  • Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) spoke at a women’s health rally on behalf of Planned Parenthood and she has “never felt my right as a woman was more threatened than I do today,” before urging the crowd, “Tell the governor to stop playing politics with women’s health.” [Florida Independent]

“The Life Zone”: A Pro-Life Horror Movie

Presented without comment, “The Life Zone,” a pro-life horror film about “pregnant women kidnapped from abortion clinics and forced to give birth,” starring Robert Loggia. New Jerseyites can check it out currently at the Hoboken International Film Festival. The rest of us will have to wait until it’s picked up by Fox News, I suppose.

“Free” Pregnancy Test Comes With Anti-Abortion Literature

Buying a pregnancy test can be awkward anywhere you live, but especially if you live in a community where everybody knows everybody. No wonder some women are happy to receive a free pregnancy test online, mailed to their house in a discreet package. But as one user of Gurl.com’s message boards recently found out, the pee-stick from OneFreePregnancyTest.com came at a price: judgment! Yes, her free pregnancy test came in the mail when anti-abortion literature that began:

Bunny In A Blender: Anti-Abortion Group’s New Scare Tactic

Anti-abortion group The American Life League has released a new video in support of Congress defunding Planned Parenthood and it wants you to think that a doctor scraping an eight-week-old bunch of cells from a uterus is just like slaughtering a cute animal in a blender. Yep, a person dressed in hospital scrubs places a bunny in a blender, the screen goes black, the blender whirs, and the camera pans to a several-months-old Caucasian baby. Nuanced! My first thought was something that my Token Pro-Life Catholic Friend said to me about how he is against abortion because it’s “an act of violence.” Huh? I don’t see women’s health supporters using imagery so cruel. [YouTube via Feministing] Keep reading »
