Brad Fischetti From LFO Spends All His Free Time At Abortion Clinics

You guys. This is crazy. You remember LFO, right? Of course you do. They’re the ones who like girls that wear Abercrombie and Fitch, remember? Yeah, those guys. Well, ever since their star began to fade in 2001, it doesn’t look like they’ve been up to too much. Rich Cronin, the cute blonde one on the far left, sadly passed away in 2010. Devin, the guy who Jennifer Love Hewitt is pressing up against, is a barber now, I believe. So where does that leave Brad, the striking young man in the middle?

Oh, you know, he just hangs out at an abortion clinic, trying to convince women who go in to “choose life.” Then he talks about it on Twitter. Read more…

On Tuesday, nearly 1000 people gathered in Oklahoma City to protest the state’s fetal personhood amendment, which seeks to legally declare that life begins at conception and would thus render abortion illegal. Among the protestors was this awesome lady, Senator Judy Eason McIntyre, whose [UPDATE] who borrowed this bawdy sign from a fellow protestor. It basically sums up my feelings on the anti-choice/anti-women legislation currently being debated around the country. [Tulsa World]

Virginia politicians advanced two extreme and extremely disturbing anti-abortion bills yesterday — Valentine’s Day, for God’s sake! One is a so-called “fetal personhood” amendment, which would criminalize all abortions by declaring that a fertilized egg is a person.

The state’s Republican-controlled House of Delegates overwhelmingly passed the “fetal personhood” bill, which now heads to the state Senate. If the bill passes the state Senate and is signed into law by Republican Governor Bob McDonnell, it would be the most sweeping criminalization of abortion in the United States. Keep reading »

A North Carolina politician sent an email to all his colleagues calling for “public hangings” of abortion providers as a deterrent.  Republican Rep. Larry Pittman wrote in an email:

“We need to make the death penalty a real deterrent again by actually carrying it out. Every appeal that can be made should have to be made at one time, not in a serial manner. If murderers (and I would include abortionists, rapists, and kidnappers, as well) are actually executed, it will at least have the deterrent effect upon them. For my money, we should go back to public hangings, which would be more of a deterrent to others, as well.”

This is all kinds of crazy that I don’t even know where to start. Comparing abortion providers — a safe, legal, at times life-saving medical practice — to murderers, rapists and kidnappers? Suggesting public hangings as a cost-saving measure? Hell, why not go whole hog and whip out the guillotine? Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: Bikinis 4 Babies!

  • When it comes to bikinis and abortion protesters, the blog posts just writes itself. Behold: “Millions of girls around the world need a great looking bikini to wear to the beach. Millions of babies around the world need to be saved from being brutally butchered. Bikinis 4 Babies combines these two needs by raising funds to help these innocent and defenseless children through selling some of the best looking bikinis, short sets, skirt sets, rompers & dresses at some of the lowest prices available anywhere.” It’s not quite as ridiculous as National Pro-Life Cupcakes Day, but it’s close! It’s National Pro-Life Cupcakes Day!

Cupcakes! Who doesn’t love cupcakes? Makes me think of Sex and the City … birthday parties … sugary frosting … abortion.

Wait … wha?! Unless this is a big joke and I am just very gullible, Cupcakes For Life is a website that’s celebrating National Pro-Life Cupcakes Day today by staging a birthday party for the unborn babies of abortion. Cupcakes For Life suggests you bring a tray of cupcakes in for a group of people who, naturally, will ask, “Cupcakes! Whose birthday is it?” Then you, the cupcake baker, are supposed to say, “It’s no one’s birthday. These cupcakes represent the 50,000,000 children who weren’t allowed to be born, who never had a birthday.” The helpful “cupcake ideas” page offers suggested frosting slogans, like “Thou shalt not murder” and “abortion kills.” Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: Oklahoma Law Forces All Abortion Details Online

  • An anti-choice Oklahoma law goes into effect on Nov. 1 requiring the data of every abortion performed in the state to be posted on a public web site. The doctor performing the abortion must answer deliberately misleading questions like, “Was there an infant born alive as a result of the abortion?”. Though the doctor isn’t revealing the woman’s name or address, Broadsheet said the first eight questions of the questionnaire would identify any woman living in a small town. “They’re really just trying to frighten women out of having abortions,” Keri Parks, director of external affairs of Planned Parenthood of Central Oklahoma said. [Salon.com Broadsheet]
  • The FBI said that in 2008 reported rapes were at their lowest level in the past 20 years. Roughly 89,000 women reported a sexual assault in ’08, compared to 109,062 women who reported rapes in 1992. [USA Today, UK Times Of London] — The use of DNA in rape reporting could be sending more repeat rapists behind bars. But it’s also possible that the number of rapes hasn’t actually gone down and only the number of reported rapes is decreasing.

Today’s Lady News: Abortion Protester Killed In Michigan

  • Anti-choice activist, James Pouillon, 63, was shot and killed while protesting abortion across from Owosso High School in Oswosso, Michigan. Police have a 33-year-old male suspect in custody who allegedly also shot and killed the owner of a local gravel company. [Detroit Free Press]—It’s premature to assume Pouillon’s murder is related to being an anti-abortion activist. Yet, after the murder of physician Dr. George Tiller, who performed late-term abortions, this summer, that’s the first place the mind goes.
  • Police say there is no evidence to link Philip Garrido, the man who kidnapped Jaycee Lee Dugard, raped her and held her captive for 18 years, with eight unsolved prostitute murders in California. [NY Daily News]
  • Kenya and Zambia have banned a brand of “leaky” condoms called Hot, which are manufactured in the U.K. According to the BBC, the Kenyan government gives out over 160 million condoms each year and they feared rumors of the “leaky” condoms would hinder the fight against the spread of HIV. [BBC]

Will There Be Enough Doctors Who Can Provide The Next Generation Of Women Abortions?

In high school I read John Irving’s excellent book, The Cider House Rules, in which the protagonist, a young man named Homer, is raised in an orphanage under the care of a kindly physician, Dr. Larch, who he is shadowing and learning medicine from. Dr. Larch eventually reveals to him that he’s been performed illegal abortions all along and he’d like to teach Homer how to do the procedure, too. Homer balked at the suggestion, imagining that he could have been aborted instead of growing up happily in the orphanage. The response Dr. Larch gave him has always stuck in my mind: “You may disapprove, but you may not be ignorant or look away.”

That quote popped in my mind when I read Kate Harding’s piece on Salon.com, “Is There A Next Generation Of Abortion Providers?”, a frightening piece about how the ranks of abortion providers are thinning and pro-choicers worry they won’t be replaced. Keep reading »

Why Is The Face Of Abortion Always A Woman’s?

Abortion unexpectedly plunged back into the news in recent weeks with the murder of Dr. George Tiller, who performed late-term abortions in Wichita, Kansas.

Everyone but the most far right extremists has condemned the killing and much of the media has focused on how this act of domestic terrorism is truly deplorable. But clinic violence, awful as it is, occurs rarely compared to the legislative assaults against reproductive rights. So in response, Maureen Tkacik (formerly Moe of Jezebel and Gawker) has written a piece for Lemondrop about the things we never mention about when we discuss about abortion—but probably should.
