Isabelle Caro, French Model With Anorexia, Dies At 28

Isabelle Caro, a French model who literally became the poster girl for anorexia, passed away last month at age 28. Her acting coach confirmed the model died on November 17, although Caro’s specific cause of death is unclear. Isabelle’s skeletal body appeared on Milanese billboards in 2007 under the words “No Anorexia” as a warning to the modeling industry about eating disorders (warning: the image is rather gruesome). She also talked with Jessica Simpson about her illness on the pop star’s reality show, “The Price of Beauty,” last year. Isabelle reportedly struggled with anorexia from age 13 and wanted to educate, even scare others, from falling down the same rabbit hole as she did. Her death is terrible news, but sadly unsurprising given the way anorexia ravaged her body. Rest in peace, Isabelle Caro. [People] Keep reading »

Girl Talk: My Love/Hate Relationship With Thinspiration Blogs

The other night, I was wading through all the junk scattered around my apartment, starting to panic because I couldn’t find a book I needed to review. I threw out bag after bag of garbage and finally decided to get some dinner, my version of which was a prepackaged frozen entree of organic tofu, vegetables and brown rice, plus a bottle of soy sauce. Does This Jonathan Adler “Thinspiration” Pillow Offend You?

Some would argue that the slogan “Nothing feels as good as skinny feels” promotes anorexia. But ask a Weight Watchers member, and she might say this mantra, which I’ve heard repeated in meetings, kept her on track to healthy weight loss. I can see both sides of the debate, especially since decorator Jonathan Adler, who created this pillow for Kirna Zabête, is known for his cheeky designs. So does this pillow offend you? Will “Black Swan” Encourage Eating Disorders?

Black Swan” is a great movie. It’s also, as Julie put it, “eating disorder porn.” In the movie, Natalie Portman‘s character not only shows signs of anorexia—she’s also bulimic. I had hoped this wouldn’t seem glamorous to teens and women seeing the movie since, well, Natalie’s character also totally loses it in a downward spiral. But apparently that’s not the case. Just now, searching for images from the movie, I found one—at a site called “Thinspo Me Baby” on Tumblr, along with the caption, “Get your thinspiration from the upcoming movie Black Swan!!!” Another search brought me to Superskinnyus.blogspot.com. And another to Mydailythinspo.blogspot.com. Looks like pro-ana websites all over are looking to the movie. Super sad. Keep reading »

Kathy Griffin Gets Half-Naked For The Troops

This weekend at VH1′s Divas Salute The Troops concert, Kathy Griffin gave the troops an eyeful in a camo bikini, a machine gun ammo belt, and black lace-up boots. The comedienne is 50 years old, so there’s probably a lot of people who think it’s a great accomplishment she’s got a body to rival Hugh Hefner’s barely-out-of-high-school girlfriends. However, earlier this year at the Grammys, she told TV host Giuliana Rancic how she got her “slammin’” body: “It’s frustration and starvation. I’m cranky all the time and I’m hungry all the time.” (And Rancic replied, “You look good! That’s all that matters!” Facepalm.) While that may be a bit of hyperbole (she is Kathy Griffin after all), I’m inclined to believe a 50-year-old does not have a body like that without there being some a lot of truth to her statement. Frisky Q&A: Brittany Snow On The “Love Is Louder” Campaign

Brittany Snow is one of those celebs who I’ve enjoyed onscreen — in the “Hairspray” remake, “Prom Night,” a singular episode of “Gossip Girl” during a Lily Van Der Woodsen flashback — but didn’t think much about. But it turns out, she’s actually a really cool person with a big heart. Brittany works closely with several organizations to promote mental health in young people, based on her own experiences being bullied in school, and later, as she told People magazine, battling anorexia, exercise bulimia (instead of throwing up, you exercise too much), body dysmorphia, and cutting.

In light of the recent suicides by LGBT youth that have cast a light on bullying, Brittany teamed up with The Jed Foundation, a suicide prevention group, and MTV for the “Love Is Louder” campaign. She’s urging people to tweet inspirational messages like “#loveislouder than hate” and “I’ve felt isolated and hopeless, but #loveislouder than the pain.” Celebs like Pink and Vinny from “Jersey Shore” have spoken out with “Love Is Louder” videos as well.

After the jump, I spoke with 24-year-old Brittany about “Love Is Louder” and her experiences being bullied. Keep reading »
