Muse and Vogue editor Anna Piaggi passed away earlier this week at 81, a style innovator and rebel to the last. Piaggi’s wild style put her in the ranks with other non-traditional fashion icons, like Zandra Rhoades, Isabella Blow and Anna Dello Russo. Her aesthetic was rooted in exaggerated forms and extensive layering, paired with her signature accessory — the top hat.

In 2006, Piaggi’s genius was recognized with an exhibition at London’s Victoria & Albert Museum, and she counted Karl Lagerfeld and Vivienne Westwood among her close friends.

Today is a sad day in fashion as we mourn the loss of Anna Piaggi, 81, the celebrated Italian fashion journalist and glamorously eccentric sartorial icon best recognized for her visionary double-page spreads of image and text in Vogue Italia. Piaggi emerged on the style scene in the 1960s as editor of Ariadne, Italy’s inaugural women’s magazine, and went on to work with a number of high-profile publications, including a position as contributing editor at the Italian incarnation of Vogue.
