Strange Bedfellows: Who’s Sitting With Whom At Fashion Week

Strange Bedfellows: Who’s Sitting With Whom At Fashion Week
Look at this picture and tell me this isn’t one of the best things you’ve ever seen. Nicki Minaj making small talk with Vogue’s Anna Wintour. Can you even imagine what they’re chatting about? Nicki’s probably all, “Lady, I like your floral situation,” while Anna sits by, quietly horrified by Nicki’s loud craft store-inspired get-up. Keep clicking for more strange pairings created by Fashion Week!

Anna Wintour Doesn’t Think She’s Powerful

“I don’t think of myself as a powerful person. You know, what does it mean? It means you get a better seat in a restaurant or tickets to a screening or whatever it may be. But it is a wonderful opportunity to be able to help others, and for that I’m extremely grateful.”

Vogue editor Anna Wintour on the spoils of power. Wintour also noted that though her powerful position may garner better restaurant seats, she’s also had to deal with cruel portrayals because of her position. Though when pressed, she refused to point to any specific examples (“The Devil Wears Prada,” we’re looking at you.) [Forbes] Keep reading »

Anna Wintour Goes Geek At Webby Awards

Last night, internet-eratti gathered in New York for the 15th Annual Webby Awards, the event honoring the biggest movers and shakers on the web. To keep things streamlined, the event has instituted a policy calling for five word acceptance speeches. My favorite of the night? Anna Wintour, who said, “Sometimes geek can be chic.” An honorable mention goes to Andrew Mason, the CEO of Groupon, who gave the wise words, “It’s short for group coupon.” And a high five to Dan Savage, who accepted the Special Achievement Award with the words “Tracy Morgan can suck my….” Keep reading »

We See Chick Flicks: “Bill Cunningham New York”

Starring Bill Cunningham, Anna Wintour, Annette de la Renta, Iris Apfel, Tom Wolf, Kim Hastreiter, Patrick McDonald, Michael Kors

I know a woman whose life possibly peaked when she was snapped by The Sartorialist. Me? I’m gunning to catch the eye of Bill Cunningham from The New York Times‘s Sunday Style section, who has been photographing street style since Scott Schumann and Garance Doré were but eggs in their mothers’ wombs. Bill Cunningham, who turned 80 while the documentary “Bill Cunningham New York” was being filmed, dropped out of Harvard in the late 1940s and began working as a milliner, making hats for New York City’s elite. Then a friend handed him a camera and Bill’s eye for style bloomed. Now he’s the beloved street style photographer — a cultural anthropologist, really — for the Times. As someone — perhaps Anna Wintour — says in “Bill Cunningham New York,” while everyone else who works in fashion is standing inside the tents during Fashion Week snapping pics of celebrities, Bill Cunningham is outside on the sidewalk taking photographs of the regular people. Rumors About Anna Wintour, Illustrated

There are tons of rumors about Vogue Editor-In-Chief Anna Wintour. Illustrator Lisa Hanawalt has documented the ones she’s heard (and a few she probably made up) in a series of hilarious drawings. This is my personal favorite. Check out the rest over at The Hairpin. I would wonder if Anna herself would find them amusing, but I heard a rumor she was born without a funny bone. Keep reading »

Anna Wintour’s Career Advice? “Get Fired.”

Anna Wintour was one of the speakers at Teen Vogue‘s annual “Fashion University” event for teens, which features seminars and panels on the industry and careers. What did the Vogue editor-in-chief have to say to America’s youth? She recommended everyone should screw up. Literally. She told the audience, “I worked for American Harper’s Bazaar … they fired me. I recommend that you all get fired, it’s a great learning experience.” Keep reading »

Tim Gunn Speaks Ill Of Anna Wintour, Enters Witness Protection Program

Tim Gunn‘s new book, Gunn’s Golden Rules: Life’s Little Lessons for Making It Work, was released today and before you buy a copy, you absolutely must A) read our Q&A with the “Project Runway” guru and B) watch this clip of Tim visiting “Regis & Kelly” this morning. Remember that story about how Tim and a colleague from Parsons saw Anna Wintour being carried down five flights of stairs by her bodyguards after a fashion show? Well, Anna caught wind of it and, damn, she was not happy. Anna‘s director of communications called up Tim and demanded an apology. “For what?” he asked. “For implying that she doesn’t know how to work a Manolo?” Yes, this qualifies as a problem for some people. Quotable: Blake Lively And Anna Wintour Are Besties Now

“I was speaking with Anna Wintour and we were just talking about different fashion houses and I said, ‘I love Chanel,’ and she said, ‘You should come with me to the show’ … I also said I loved Dior. She said, ‘Okay, well I’ll take you to the Chanel and Dior shows and we’ll meet with Karl [Lagerfeld] and John [Galliano] afterwards.’ Insane!”

Blake Lively talking about her new bud in the October issue of Marie Claire. I guess Anna Wintour is more fun to hang with if you’re not her assistant. [Us Weekly] Keep reading »

Anna Wintour Educates Jimmy Fallon On Fashion’s Night Out: “No Sales!”

Anna Wintour and Marc Jacobs stayed up past their bedtimes last night (well, maybe just Anna) to talk about Fashion’s Night Out on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.” The best part is when Jimmy asks Anna a bit about FNO, saying, “So the stores stay open and you have, like, sales?” To which Anna responds, “No sales! Full price!” Marc chimes in, “Things are for sale, they’re not on sale.” Classic. It’s at the end when Wintour attempts a weird joke about Fallon, Jacobs, and bananas that we get lost.
