Anna Wintour Is One Fashionable Politician

AP

Anna Wintour had a very special birthday yesterday. Not only did the Vogue editor turn 60 years old but President Obama hired her for a job! Don’t worry, Anna’s not leaving her masthead position any time soon, but she does have a new title to add to her resume. She’ll join fellow fashionista Sarah Jessica Parker on the President’s Committee for the Arts and Humanities. The job task ahead of her is all about giving Obama advice on how to bring the arts into society. We think she can handle that one. She’s already made a huge statement with Fashion’s Night Out, which was so popular that a sequel date set has been set. We certainly look forward to Anna’s projects as a part of the government, because if FNO was any indication, there could be a fashion national holiday in our future. Hey, getting a day off work to go shopping doesn’t sound so bad. [WWD]

The Halloween Inspiration Board: Anna Wintour

If you’ve ever wanted to be truly feared, we’ve got the costume for you. We’re not talking “scary” in the way that zombies or pre-Twilight vampires are. That’s child’s play. We’re talking grown women (and men) crying in closets in your wake. For that kind of terror, Vogue editor Anna Wintour is your only option.

When You’re Donald Trump’s Daughter, Anna Wintour Throws Jobs At You

A recent Frisky meeting almost came to blows when it came to the subject of Ivanka Trump and her new business book, The Trump Card. In one corner, there was me—I get enraged like a Pamplona bull at the slightest whiff of nepotism. Donald Trump‘s daughter has a lot of nerve writing a business advice book, coasting through life with the last name “Trump”! But in the other corner we had sweet ol’ Catherine who said she really likes and respects Miss Trump. Ivanka may have been born Donald Trump’s daughter, Catherine said, but she’s still worked hard of her own accord! I wasn’t buying it.

I’ll eat my words today, though, after watching a clip of Ivanka on “Good Morning America.” I still think it’s silly that she wrote a business advice book, but I have more respect for Ivanka knowing she’s serious about following in her dad’s real estate footsteps. In this clip she explains how Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue, called her up on the eve of her graduation and offered her the job “a million girls would die for” at Vogue ... which Ivanka turned down.

Still ... way to keep the torch of nepotism burning, Anna.

Anna Wintour’s Office: A Label-Whore Breakdown

Anna's office

Many of us have seen photos of Anna Wintour‘s office at this point—and it was most famously copied for “The Devil Wears Prada” (though she’s since redecorated to banish any similarities, we hear)—but what really makes up the chic space? Like, can we be label whores for a minute? Indeed, because Apartment Therapy has a piece-by-piece breakdown of its contents! (Based on the above screenshot from “The September Issue” and a few “60 Minutes” clips.) Check out all the interior details, after the jump!

Fashion Week Primer: The Editors

The Important Fashion Week Editors

We all vaguely recognize the big models and can’t help but know who the stylish celebs are sitting front row. But the people who matter most during Fashion Week can be a little trickier to spot. We’re talking, of course, about fashion magazine editors. Check out the big players in our handy-dandy chart after the jump. And don’t worry, some of them aren’t as obvious as you-already-know-who.

Anna Wintour Waits In Line Like A Peasant & “The September Issue” Is Insanely Successful

Anna Wintour in line

There are certain things that people like Anna Wintour just do not do. Like eat, sleep or go to the bathroom. Waiting in line is one of these things. It just doesn’t happen. Or so we thought. But Wintour was snapped waiting in line to see “The September Issue” [again] over the weekend. And not only was Madame Wintour waiting in line just like a common peasant, she was also wearing jeans, a t-shirt and flats. [Gawker]

Really, there are so many things wrong with this picture that the mind reels. If she weren’t wearing the signature glasses and a bob so severe that it must be intended to dole out paper-cut-esque injuries to those who get too close, we might think that was a clever impersonator. But, apparently, the movie is well worth the wait and it brought in enough viewers to make it the fifth most successful documentary opening, umm, ever. Have you seen it yet!?

Anna Wintour Melts (A Little) On Letterman

Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour was on “The Late Show” last night to promote “The September Issue” and she was everything I expected and more. She trotted out in her signature sunglasses, didn’t let Letterman intimidate her in the slightest, and, perhaps unexpectedly, she was funny! She poked fun at Dave’s socks and sincerely seemed to suggest he buy Thom Browne suits, with their cropped pant leg, so he could show them off, and despite a reputation for being completely unapproachable, she was actually quite self-deprecating. Check out the interview above!

Quote Of The Day: Anna Wintour Is The New Gloria Steinem

Anna Wintour

“She’s been doing this for so long, surrounded by men. [...] There’s absolutely a feminist aspect to her. I think a lot of the attacks against her are misogynist. Men in business are totally cutthroat and nobody says bad things about them for it.”

—Model Elettra Wiedemann on “feminist hero,” Vogue editor-in-chief, and “The September Issue” star Anna Wintour [The Cut]

Style Buzz: Grace Comes Clean And “The Beautiful Life” Gets More Gorgeous Guest Stars

Grace Coddington

  • Grace Coddington creative director of Vogue finally up and comes out with it—sometimes she can’t freakin’ stand Anna. [WWD]

  • AnOther Magazine‘s September issue has four covers: Kate Moss and Katie Holmes, shot by Craig McDean, and Vanessa Paradis and Natalie Portman, shot by none other than Hedi Slimane. [Design Scene] Love how slicked-back hair on Katie and Natalie equals “edgy.”

  • The Sundance Channel is bringing back “Full Frontal Fashion.” [WWD] We kinda sorta missed it.

Quick Pic: Sienna Miller And Anna Wintour Let Bygones Be Bygones

    Sienna Miller & Anna Wintour

Despite the fact that there are entire scenes in “The September Issue” which involve Anna and her cronies criticizing Sienna for being “toothy” (among other flaws) and plotting ways to Photoshop her image for the cover, last night at the premiere they buddied up for a pap shot on the red carpet. Note: Sienna is not flashing her famous grin. [8/19/09, NYC]

The Queen Of Queens? Anna To Make Awkward Store Appearance

    Queen of Queens

So, we are already cringing at thoughts of Vogue editor and fashion royal Anna Wintour addressing the masses at Macy’s in the New York borough of Queens, of all places. The collision of these two worlds is guaranteed to be the stuff good reality shows are made of. (Too bad they’re no longer filming the soon-to-be released documentary “The September Issue.”) Wintour will be joined by designer and “Project Runway” host Michael Kors on September 10 at the department store, where the duo will be on hand to showcase fall trends and sign t-shirts for the first 50 folks in line. The appearance kicks off the city-wide launch of Fashion’s Night Out, a multi-day “shopping” event meant to jump-start fall retail sales across the country. [Racked]

Question is, will Wintour pull a Cintra Wilson and write about how disturbingly “middle-class” Macy’s is in her next editor’s letter? Only time will tell.

Anna Wintour Will Appear On “Letterman”!

    Anna Wintour

Frosty Vogue editrix-in-chief Anna Wintour is slated to yuk it up with David Letterman on his late night show. Why would her Highness deign to gift Dave with her presence? To promote “The September Issue,” a new documentary that chronicles Wintour’s preparations for the massive September 2007 issue of Vogue, following the fashion legend as her team of editors brainstorm, style shoots, and meet with designers.

Could Letterman bring out Wintour’s supposed fun, coquettish side? If he can’t do it, no one can. Set your TiVos for Monday, August 24. [The Cut]

What Does This Whole “Fashion’s Night Out” Thing Mean Anyway?

    Fashion's Night Out

If Anna Wintour and Diane von Furstenberg get their way, there will be no more sale racks to sift through for deals. But it’s a bit more complicated than that, as The Wall Street Journal explains. What is “Fashion’s Night Out”?

Quote Of The Day: Bee Shaffer Rebels Against Anna Wintour

    Bee Shaffer and Anna Wintour

“I really don’t want to work in fashion. It’s just not for me. I respect her, obviously, but it’s just a really weird industry ... She wants me to be an editor. I would never put it down, but I just don’t want to take it too seriously. People in there act like fashion is life. It’s really amusing, but if that’s your career—there are other things out there, seriously ... I think I want to be a lawyer.”

—Bee Shaffer explains that despite mom Anna Wintour‘s hopes for her, she’s not too keen on going into the family business, possibly making her the only person who has ever dared to defy the devil in Prada. How very Saffy from “Ab Fab” of her! [Fox News]

When It Comes To Fashion Erotica, There’s Nothing To Be Ashamed Of

    Viva Magazine

We love, love, love today’s Refinery 29 roundup of erotic fashion magazines. And while we heartily agree with their statement regarding the fact that modern-day fashion advertising and editorials are sexier than ever—“With the lines between fashion, eroticism, and porn becoming less and less clear, it seems perfectly on point for a sexy slew of stylized skin mags to arouse new curiosity”—we feel compelled to point out that one of our favorite magazines of all time, Viva, was totally all up on this back in the ‘70s, and if you like this kind of stuff, you should get to know it. [Refinery 29 (NSFW)]

Oh, and did we mention that Anna Wintour worked at Viva? More scoop, after the jump…

Anna Wintour: Public Enemy #1 Of Discount Shoppers?

    Anna Wintour

There’s no denying the rush of joy (and feeling like you’re getting away with theft) when you find an incredible designer piece at Loehmann’s or Nordstrom Rack that you can actually afford. Of course, on the flip side, there’s no more annoying feeling in life than when you’ve just spent your entire paycheck on an item of clothing, only to see it marked down 50 percent the next week.

Either way, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour doesn’t seem too happy about discounts in general (no surprise there). But even we were shocked by her rawtha extreme views!

Excuse Me, Anna Wintour Is Calling

Anna Wintour ringtones for The September Issue

RJ Cutler’s Vogue documentary, “The September Issue,” comes out in New York at the end of August (when the Sept. 2009 issue will be hitting newsstands). After watching the trailer last month, we’ve been obsessed with Anna Wintour’s clever, biting style of criticism and can’t wait to hear more along the lines of, “This type seems so large and pretentious. It looks like it’s for blind people.” Until then, we’ll settle for these new ringtones. While Anna would never in a million years call us, the “Anna Wintour’s office” ring makes it sounds like her people are calling us! We’ve never felt so important in our lives. “The September Issue”: Like “The Devil Wears Prada” But Mostly Real

ICON. LEGEND. FEARED. REVERED. ANNA F**KING WINTOUR, begins the trailer for The September Issue. (Well, minus “f**king,” but we totally wouldn’t have been shocked.) Watch it now and tell us what your favorite bit was in the comments. I was partial to Andre Leon Talley lamenting the “famine of beauty” towards the end. And Anna glancing at proofs and saying “she looks pregnant” over a picture of Jennifer Garner. And the part when Thakoon compares Anna to Madonna (because it’s true). And everything. Just everything.
