Romney Family Adopts A Black Baby Named Kieran & People Are Upset About It

I dislike Mitt Romney and his politics as much as the next liberal. But I draw the line at inane knee-jerk reactions to the name of his new adopted grandchild.

See, Ben Romney and his wife Andelynne Romney (above) adopted a newborn baby boy. The 23rd grandchild in the Romney family  (not 22nd, as tweeted) is a little Black baby named Kieran James Romney. Some folks on Twitter are upset that in Gaelic, the name Kieran means “black,” “little dark one,” or “dark skinned.” They seem to be suggesting Ben Romney, a doctor, and his wife chose intentionally to stigmatize the child by effectively naming him “Black Romney.” Keep reading »

Fashion Face-Off: Michelle Obama Vs. Ann Romney

You’re probably sick to death of hearing about their husbands, but Ann Romney and Michelle Obama merit some attention, too. We’re not going to talk about their politics, but we are going to examine their wardrobes. In the past four years, Michelle’s risen to prominence as a fashion star, but Ann certainly is giving her a run for her money. After the jump, we size up the candidates’ wives sartorial chops.

Who Wore It Better?: The First Lady Faces Off Against Ann Romney

Now that we’ve gotten that silly town hall presidential debate out of the way, let’s discuss what’s really important: clothes! In a twist of fashion fate, First Lady Michelle Obama and Ann Romney both sported vibrant pink to last night’s event in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Egg went for a casual sheath style in a crepey fabric, which she paired with a chunky beaded teal necklace, while Michelle opted for a dressier look complete with matching jacket and a string of pearls. We have our own convictions about who came out on top (and who got shoved in a binder), but what say you?

“Thrilled Ann Romney says [Modern Family] is her favorite show. We’ll offer her the role of officiant at Mitch & Cam’s wedding. As soon as it’s legal.”

–”Modern Family” creator Steve Levitan tweeted this response to Ann Romney after she told “Entertainment Tonight” that the sitcom was her favorite TV show. As you probably know, “Modern Family” features a gay couple, Mitch and Cam, who are in a committed relationship and raising an adopted daughter together, although federal law prohibits them from marrying.  Meanwhile, Ann’s husband Mitt has promised to define marriage as between one man and one woman if he is elected president. Political theater like the Republican and Democratic National Conventions are a big swamp of blerrgghhh to me. My opinion is that it’s all just a dog-and-pony show and not really the best way to get to know a candidate, their viewpoints, or their cronies at all.

But yes, it’s still a big to-do. What happens is important in the sense that it gets a lot of press coverage. So in the interest of being a well-informed member of the populace, here are 5 things to know about what happened at last night’s Republican National Convention: Keep reading »
