We here at The Frisky love animals of any kind, but we have a special place in our heart for adopted petsThe Sidekick Series, a webseries that features adopted pets and their owners, will melt you at the seams. The videos aim to encourage animal adoption by showing what wonderful companions rescue pets can make. I blame the uplifting music and those cute faces.

Photographer’s “Why We Rescue” Project Champions Pet Adoption With Moving Photographs And Stories

I Love My Dog
Amelia is terrified of losing her dog, Lucca. Read More »

Adopting my dog Lucca from a shelter nearly eight years ago is, hands down, the best and most gratifying decision I’ve ever made. While I would never suggest that the love I feel for Lucca is greater because of it, I do think the experience of rescuing a dog, rather than buying from a breeder or a pet store, is very special and meaningful. Back in 2007, I didn’t know what kind of dog I wanted. I don’t think I really cared about a “kind.” I had some loose requirements — a Mastif wasn’t going to work in my studio apartment — but mostly I wanted to find a dog I connected with and who connected with me. It was about finding the right dog, with “right” based much more on intuition rather than a list of breed qualities. This feeling is what photographer Theron Humphrey has captured in his series “Why We Rescue,” featuring photographs of 50 people who adopted their pets and the stories behind those adoptions. The series aims to change perceptions about how loving shelter pets can be. Keep reading »

Celebrity Selfies Are So Much Better With Puppies In Them

Frivolous celeb selfies might actually do some good in the world, if Dallas Pets Alive (DPA) has anything to say about it. The nonprofit aims to make no-kill shelters the norm in Dallas, TX, and to find homes for rescue dogs. Their oh-so-brilliant marketing geniuses have gotten into the habit of #muttbombing, or reposting celebs’ selfies (and normal folks’ pictures too!) on their Instagram account with a shelter dog photoshopped in. So far, stars like Kim Kardashian, Jimmy Fallon, and Miley Cyrus have been featured, and their Instagrams are that much better for it. Besides being hilarious, the project is also effective — about half of the dogs featured in the first few days of the campaign have been adopted. I’m rooting for a “Real Housewives” #muttbomb next! I haven’t been excited about a video game since I beat my brother at Tony Hawk: Pro Skater that one time in 1999, but my apathetic video game attitude is about to change, thanks  to a brilliant and poetically titled new game: Goat Simulator. Here’s how its creator, game designer Armin Ibrisagic, describes it:

Goat Simulator is similar to a skating game, except instead of being a skater, you’re a goat, and instead of doing tricks, you wreck stuff and make people angry.”

Alright, Alright, Cat Ladies (And Gents): Here Are The Stars Of The Kitten Half-Time Show At Puppy Bowl X

As an obsessive dog owner, it can be easy for me to forget that there are other creatures people keep as pets and love as much as I love Lucca. I was reminded of this yesterday, when I posted a link to the Puppy Bowl X gallery to FB and a friend, who happens to be a cat lover, reminded me that puppies are not the only stars of the Puppy Bowl. “Everyone knows that the Kitten Halftime Show is the real draw,” he said. Now, I don’t want to pit puppies and kittens against each other here, as there’s more than enough room for all kinds of cuteness in this world. So let’s give the Puppy Bowl kittens their due!

10 New Weirdest, Worst Fears Inspired By The Porcupine That Fell On A Woman’s Head

10 New Weirdest, Worst Fears Inspired By The Porcupine That Fell On A Woman's Head

A big thank you to Sandra Nabucco, the Brazilian woman who reminds us that our weirdest worst fears can come true. While the 52-year-old was out walking her dog, a porcupine fell off a telephone wire and landed on her head, leaving 200 quills in Nabucco’s scalp. “It was a huge shock. I felt a thud on my head and then felt spines with my hands. The pain was enormous,” she said of the incident. If porcupines are literally falling from the sky now, who’s to say a shark couldn’t jump out of our car while we’re driving or a lion couldn’t randomly appear in the gym steam room right when you drop your towel? Inspired by Mrs. Nabucco’s unlucky plight, here are a few of our weirdly specific phobias that might be more realistic than we thought…. Keep reading »

2013 The Year In Goats

Even if you’re not an obsessive goat lover like me, you’ve got to admit 2013 was a huuuuuge year for goats. These mischievous little bovids bounced their way into music videos, Taylor Swift songs, the Guinness Book of World Records, airport maintenance programs, bars, and even Jose Canseco’s trunk. For posterity’s sake, here’s a compendium of all the top goat stories of the year: Keep reading »
