Cat Gives Birth To A Dog?!

Yesterday, we discussed dealbreaker pets. Would any of you be opposed to dating someone with a catdog? This woman Georgia claims her cat gave birth to a dog — the little kittypup has the tail and ears of its mommy, but the rest of the body is more dog-like. Shut the front door! Apparently, vets think that the animal’s, um, unusual-ness is more likely the result of radiation, not a dog and a cat procreating; this story is decidedly less adorable now. New Upsetting Trend: Pets With Twitter Accounts

Twitter user Medlar wants to share his thoughts with the world. Yesterday he Tweeted, “I don’t think big turtles ever sleep.” Okay. I guess I’ll take his word for it considering he is um, a turtle, and a common, snapping one with impaired vision at that. His @turtlefeed has 368 followers. That’s like hundreds more than I have! He’s a pet turtle fahchrissakes and he’s somehow managed to gain fame on the interwebs. That’s not fair to us humans who do have very important and funny things to say. Keep reading »

This Little Piggie Steals The Show With His Red Rain Boots

First miniature dogs, then cats, and now miniature pigs? Piglet from Disney‘s Winnie the Pooh better move on over. This miniature pig named Clive is taking the spotlight. This little pig, who is a resident of Pennywell Farm in England, is looking pretty darn cute with his Paddington Bear red Wellington boots. These rain boots, or Wellies as they call them in the UK, were taken from a stuffed Paddington Bear and placed on to Clive’s little hoofs as a training exercise, and they ended up also protecting him from the wet ground. Hopefully Clive gets adopted by a great family soon. How could you not want him, he’s so cute?! Snort, snort. [PeoplePets] Keep reading »

Should You Treat Your Man Like You Do Your Dog?

I had no sooner finished dry-heaving over my friend’s tale of the ordeal involved in getting her dog’s anal glands expressed, when I stumbled upon yet another article—written by a psychologist named Dr. Suzanne Phillps, Psy.D—extolling the benefits of treating your partner as you do your pet. I understand that it’s hard to think about new ways to write about relationships, but can we quit equating beasts with boys? (Dogs are far more loyal!) Keep reading »

Arizonans Upset Over $21 Lion Burgers. Wait, What? Lion Burgers?

This morning I saw a news story in a tawdry tabloid that I read (just for fun, I swear!) about some restaurant in Arizona that was serving lion burgers and getting the meat from a “free-range farm in Illinois.” A free-range lion farm? Ha-ha, I thought. People who edit tabloids sure are gullible and dumb.

But now slightly more credible news outlets — like, the Associated Press — are reporting lion burgers are a “thing” and Il Vinaio restaurant in Mesa, Arizona, is serving burgers made from African lion meat in honor of the World Cup. (Because nothing says “let’s hear it for Africa” like eating their wild animals?) Keep reading »

A Pony Face Only A 6-Year-Old Loved

Meet Diego. He was born with a rare condition that left his face disfigured and would have been euthanized if 6-year-old Maddison Biddlecombe hadn’t fallen in love with him, despite his abnormal appearance. Now, Maddison’s mom is hoping to raise £4,000 so Diego can undergo an operation by an equine dentist. Kids can be so much more mature and loving than adults. [Hampshire, UK, 6/21/10] Keep reading »

Goose Does A Two-Step When It Gets Bread

Most of our cute animal videos focus on cats and dogs, but every once in awhile, another member of the animal kingdom does something totally charming. Take for instance this bar-headed goose that does a two-step dance every time it gets bread. It doesn’t even need to eat the bread to boogie down and often loses out because it’s too busy dancing. Check out the remix to this video over at Urlesque. Keep reading »

The World’s Gone Animal Cam Crazy!

You remember the puppy cam, right? Well, animals cams are officially the latest craze, and they’re kind of like “The Truman Show” for pets. At UStream.tv, watch owls and eagles on feeds that air non-stop. Oh, and there’s also the bear cam, as well as channels for cats, squirrels, and other assorted critters. You can watch it for hours and hours, wasting time like it’s your job. It’s even more addictive than YouTube. Viewers chatter amongst themselves about the animal action and even name the animals, like virtual pets. It’s just like bird-watching, without the binoculars or sunburn. I need to tell my grandma about this … Keep reading »

American Kennel Club Welcomes Mutts For The First Time

For the first time in its 125-year history, the American Kennel Club is allowing mutts to compete alongside pure breeds in their dog shows. OK, so not in every category; mixed breeds are only allowed to compete in the skills-based competitions like Agility, Rally and Obedience. But the message is clear — the organization whose mission has been to “advance the study, breeding, exhibiting, running and maintenance of purebred dogs” is finally recognizing the beauty of all dogs. “AKC has always been best known as an advocate for purebred dogs,” says the AKC’s Gina DiNardo, in discussing the change. “But [we're] concerned about the welfare of all dogs.” And if all dogs are worthy of being shown and celebrated in front of the AKC, maybe less people will be inclined to purchase pure breeds from unethical puppy mills and will adopt instead. And maybe, just maybe, a ribbon is in Lucca’s future … [Washington Post] Keep reading »

Doggie Yoga: Pay Good Money To Annoy The Heck Out Of Your Pooch

My dog Lucca does lots of really cute things. She even poops in a cute way — seriously, she looks at me while she’s doing it, like she’s almost ashamed to be in public relieving her bowels. Anyway, one other cute thing she does is dramatic stretching. First she stretches her front legs, then she individually points her back paws and stretches them. Really, she’s doing yoga, or “doga,” and she’s doing it with far more frequency than I am, if I’m being honest. So she’s really a perfect candidate for these ridiculous doga classes being offered around the country, where owners bring their pets to yoga class and they, like, open their chakras together. Doga has been around for awhile, but CBS, in the clip above, found a class in Omaha, Nebraska to spotlight, which just shows that doggie yoga is officially a big ol’ trend. I’m not sure that I would personally get much out of paying for a doga class, fitness-wise, and I suspect Lucca would rather do her doga on her own at home. She’s fiscally conservative. Keep reading »
