Dominique Swain Is Worst PETA Spokesperson Ever

You loved her in “Lolita” and uh, whatever else she was in (hm…), but actress Dominique Swain just did a really, really bad thing that makes puppies cry. Not only was she lame enough to not get her dog fixed (what responsible pet owner in this day and age does that!?), but the cocker spaniel had a litter of eight puppies, and she decided to dump them at an already overburdened Malibu animal shelter. But wait, it gets worse: After driving up in her BMW and insisting they take the pups, workers there informed her that it was crucial that the animals be vaccinated, as puppies can easily die if they don’t get their shots at four and eight weeks. Her dogs were already eight weeks, but they had received none. When they agreed to take the poor creatures and suggested she make a donation to cover the cost of the shots, she claimed she was broke. (Well, like we said, we haven’t seen her in anything lately, but still … animal shelters are broke, Dominique Swain is not.) And the cherry on top of this horrifying tale? Keep reading »

Does This Animal Rights Ad Go Too Far?

In America, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals are well known for their shock-tactic ads, but they’re not the only pro-animal rights organization willing to go overboard with advertising in order to bring attention to the cause. Wakker Dier, which means “Animal Awake,” is a Dutch organization that’s Europe’s PETA counterpart. For their campaign, they hired Dutch Playmate and fetish model Ancilla Tilia to play the part of a stripper who gets clubbed and stripped like an animal. Watch it, after the jump, but be forewarned it’s fairly graphic.

While PETA’s ads have a tendency to be more silly than shocking, this ad is a real eye-opener. But does the video get across the organization’s mission? Does watching a fetish model get “clubbed” and “stripped” make people more sensitive to animal rights? Or does the viral path this ad will take mean more people will be thinking about animal rights than they were yesterday? [ANIMAL via Copyranter] Keep reading »

Chic Taxidermy? Squirrel Feet Earrings

I thought Luna Lovegood in Harry Potter had cornered the market on “random things to decorate your ears with” when she donned those radish earrings. Nope, not even close. Check out these freeze dried squirrel feet earrings and necklace. Taxidermy for your lobes — hot! I am not sure which disturbs me more: the knowledge that some poor squirrel in squirrel heaven has to watch his feet dangle around some random person’s neck in a very undignified fashion, or that the “designer” made them in the first place. Look, I’m not a vegetarian and I totally wear leather, but even I recognize that these earrings are just…wrong. Plus, they are truly hideous. [$20-$32, Etsy] Keep reading »

PETA Splatters The Olsen Twins With Virtual Red Paint

The marketing geniuses at PETA are at it again! This time the animal loving rabble rousers are going after Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen…make that Hairy-Kate and Trashley Trollsen. The group has dedicated an entire campaign and a MySpace page to tearing down the pint-sized twins for their habit of wearing and producing clothing made with fur.

“Like most trolls, we live under a bridge and wait for furry animals to walk by so we can skin them and wear them as hats. Because we’re celebrities, we don’t have to live by the same rules that ugly people like you do, and if we want to wrap ourselves up in someone else’s skin, or drape our bodies in the rotting remains of someone’s family, we totally can! And boy, do we ever.”

In all fairness, when you’re that skinny and tiny, you do get cold more easily, but everyone knows PETA would rather people die from hypothermia than risk an animal getting its life cut short. We kid, because seriously, fur isn’t sexy and little people with bulging eyes and enormous cups of Starbucks that are swathed in it are even more creepy. [MySpace and Peta2] Keep reading »
