You know that saying about love — you know, the classic line from the classic film “The Hot Chick” — that it makes your heart beat faster and slower at the same time? Well, I have intimacy issues, but that’s the kind of feeling I get towards new makeup releases, particularly when not one, but two, of my favorite icons are involved. Let’s get down to it: I’m talking Andy Warhol, artist, socialite, pop culture hero, as the inspiration behind a cosmetic line from makeup innovator and photographer François Nars. The NARS founder and namesake has crafted the brand’s — and the Warhol Foundation’s — largest collaboration, with Andy as its muse. Keep reading »

Andy Warhol, the artist and luminary responsible for the postmodern visual movement known as pop, would have been 84 yesterday. Though his death at 58 was woefully premature, I have a feeling he wouldn’t have wanted to be around today — or, on the contrary, maybe he would, if only to see that America has transmogrified completely into the vulgar, consumer-driven culture he envisioned more than fifty years ago. Nothing I say could ever do Andy proper justice, so I’ll pay him homage this way: beauty inspiration culled from the man himself, a self-proclaimed “deeply superficial person” who believed in “low lights and trick mirrors,” and from the glow-in-the-dark people he surrounded himself with. (Yes, that includes Edie.) Put on a bit of required listening brought to you by Lou, click through, and remember: “If everyone isn’t beautiful, then no one is.” Keep reading »

I have a feeling that the man himself would think very highly of this news: François Nars, the beauty maestro behind his eponymous Nars brand, will be working alongside The Andy Warhol Foundation to release a collaborative makeup collection inspired by the creative oeuvre of — who else? — the late Andy Warhol. The Pop icon, who requires no introduction, is the muse behind the limited-edition cosmetics, set to debut at Nars counters and their free-standing location on Bleecker Street in October. Nars never disappoints with his vividly pigmented, impeccably textured formulas and sleek, unmistakable packaging. In fact, I would even go so far as to say that the genius Nars is Pop in his own right, which no doubt would have made Andy proud. Of course, the project will incorporate the brilliant hues that the artist and legend was known for in its shades and packaging. It seems like everyone garners influence and insight from Andy, but this is one truly promising use of his legacy. I can’t wait — whatever the offerings, I’m sure the products will sell out fast. Andy Warhol Got In Trouble With His Landlord, Too

Pop artist Andy Warhol raised a ruckus in the ’60s with his new approach to art and the wild lifestyle he promoted via The Factory, his silver foiled-decorated live/work artist space. But having a cast of thousands coming in and out of your apartment at all hours — including the Velvet Underground, Salvador Dali and Bob Dylan — was bound to piss off the neighbors. In a letter sent by his landlord Alfred Goldstein, Warhol was derided for throwing the very parties that helped skyrocket his scene to the stuff of legend. “We have been advised that you have been giving parties in the fourth floor space occupied by you,” read the letter. “We understand that they are generally large parties and are held after usual office hours. We have found that your guests have left debris and litter in the public areas which you have never bothered to clean.” Very shortly afterward, Warhol moved to a new space further downtown, leaving the original Factory behind, and further cementing himself as a permanent pop fixture. See, even Warhol couldn’t catch a break. [Letters of Note] Keep reading »

Warhol’s Candy Darling Gets Her Due

Candy Darling was a part of artist Andy Warhol’s inner circle–a muse and a flamboyant character in Warhol’s Factory scene. She was also a dark and troubled figure, immortalized in the Velvet Underground’s “Walk on the Wildside.” The new documentary, “Beautiful Darling,” chronicles Darling’s humble beginnings as a young boy and her rise to Warhol superstar. We can’t wait to see it. Keep reading »

Yoko Ono Could Have Been Lady Gaga

“[Warhol] said, ‘Yoko, you should be doing like this and that. He was actually predicting something like Lady Gaga, you know, the costumes and all that. He said, ‘You should do that.’ But I said, ‘Well I’m an activist and I’m not going to do that.’ I was in a different mood then. What she’s doing is beautiful … I don’t think I would like to be too near a meat dress.”

Yoko Ono on how Andy Warhol urged to her dress like Lady Gaga back in the day. Somehow I just can’t picture Yoko in a dress made out of Kermit the Frogs, but good call, Warhol. [NY Post] Keep reading »

Quickies: Lady Gaga Speaks To Andy Warhol & Brit Kid Called Prez Obama The P-Word

  • A friend of Lady Gaga’s claims she believes the pop artist Andy Warhol speaks with her from beyond the grave. “She is convinced he is controlling her … guiding her life and career,” the source said. “Her entire life has become dictated by these conversations.” Ummmm, OK. Gaga is also decorating her Los Angeles mansion as a shrine to the late artiste. [The Sun UK]

Naked Pic Of Jackie O Found Amongst Andy Warhol’s Junk

Jackie Oh-no! A naked pic of the late President Kennedy’s wife, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, has recently been discovered by archivists in a box of Andy Warhol‘s junk. But don’t get too excited about a possible Kennedy/Warhol affair: It’s merely a snap that porn king Larry Flynt bought from paparazzi who had caught Kennedy Onassis skinny-dipping and used as a poster for his mag, Hustler. The archivists assume that Jackie mailed the photo to her pal Warhol as a joke, signing it, “For Andy, with enduring affection, Jackie Montauk.” Good to know she had a sense of humor about it!

Since Warhol’s death in 1987, the pic had been gathering dust in one of 610 cardboard boxes filled with the pop art prince’s weird crap, including a mummified human foot, a loaf of orange nut bread and a crusty piece of birthday cake. Hmm, sounds like someone had a hoarding problem, although he admittedly held onto some cool s**t. [AP]

Crave: Andy Warhol Quote Plates

Eating off of Andy Warhol’s face may not be the most appetizing idea, but we’re wild for these pop-tastic small plates bearing the visage of the eccentric Factory founder and his clever quips, like, “Art is what you can get away with.” For so cheap, we were amazed they aren’t throwaway paper plates!
