“No, no, no. I was just into my magazines and the drawings. I had a very strict upbringing, almost puritanical. I lived there all the way through college. I was in my grandmother’s house, and I respected that! [I] had very gay experiences, yes, I swear on my grandmother’s grave that I never slept with a single designer in my life. Never, ever desired, never was asked, never was approached, never, ever bought, in my entire career. Never. Not one. Skinny or fat. Never.”

– Vogue editor and muumuu-wearer extraordinaire Andre Leon Talley, who rejects the label “gay,” says that he’s fallen in love twice, both times with women (and neither of them Anna Wintour). As for his relationship with Wintour, Talley says “I wouldn’t have stayed at Vogue as long as I did without Anna being there. She was my biggest ally. There could not have been another way.” And also: “Ms. Wintour has had her bob since she was in her 20s. I have never seen her hair pulled back. Never. Not even at tennis.” [Vanity Fair]

So, Beyonce Totally Crashed The Met Ball

If you’re Beyonce, you can pretty much do whatever you want to do — and that includes crashing one of the most important events on the New York social calendar, the Met Costume Institute Ball. It seems Bey wasn’t planning on going at all, but then that purple Givenchy gown showed up at her house that evening (because gowns are always just showing up at Beyonce’s house, apparently) and poof! She changed her mind. As her date, Andre Leon Talley explained, “Beyonce was not slated to come. She decided to come last minute when the dress arrived at her house. She tried it on and then she said, ‘Okay, I have to come.’ She did arrive at 8:55 and the ball had already started, but it didn’t matter because she is Beyonce.” How true, A.L.T., how true. The gods of fashion have spoken: André Leon Talley, the former Vogue editor-at-large more recently recognized for his position on the judging panel of “America’s Next Top Model,” will be receiving his very own reality show on Bravo. Finally! ALT, without a doubt one of the most endearingly excellent personalities in fashion, will be the subject of a series tentatively titled “Fashion Stories” of NYC in which he acts a “mentor” to four enterprising fashion design teams as they “produce the defining collection of their careers” while striving to “create, show, and sell,” with the ultimate goal of building and maintaining a legitimate business in New York City. As NY Mag rightfully pointed out, the premise of the show does sound like an amalgamation of many fashion reality shows we’ve already seen… but man, who cares about that when André’s at the helm? I would happily watch a show in which he sat chair-bound for 30 minutes. For now, let’s just hope some of his industry pals make a cameo — like, say, Grace Coddington? Hey, just a suggestion. A Video Tribute: André Leon Talley’s Best Moments On “Top Model”

After four cycles, 45 judging panels, 54 different contestants, and many of his beautiful, signature capes, André Leon Talley bids farewell to theAmerica’s Next Top Model judging panel. Wednesday night’s cycle 17 finale, was his final episode (next season, Kelly Cutrone will take his seat). His addition to the panel last year for cycle 14 was heralded as a new, high-fashion direction for the show. …

Along with serious fashion credentials, Talley brought sass, made-up words, and a fascinating dynamic with Tyra to each episode. He also, of course, wore great hats, chunky jewelry, and disdainful expressions where needed; he once even waved a cane faux-threateningly, which was wonderful. See a video compilation of ALT’s best moments on the show in this video…

André Leon Talley Gives Tips For Penny-Pinching

Andre Leon Talley Out, Kelly Cutrone In In “ANTM”?

Who can understand the whims and desires of International Top Supermodel and Media Mogul Tyra Banks? For the past several cycles she’s had the inimitable Vogue Contributing Editor Andre Leon Talley as a panel judge for the show, but now rumor has it that he’ll be replaced by PR guru/life coach/”The City” HBIC Kelly Cutrone. Perhaps Talley was over the dreckitude–or perhaps there was a more sinister situation happening between himself and Banks. We can only imagine that two people which such big, uh, personalities may have run into conflict from time to time. In any case, we’ll miss his oversized muumuus and would clamor to sit in his “sa-lon” anytime.

But on with Cutrone, whose sharp tongue and chipper new age-y self help advice will no doubt put a different spin on “ANTM”‘s model panel. (Hell, she’s even wore a muumuu or two of her own during the debut season of “Kell On Earth.”) And now we’ve got a new Cutrone-related drinking game to employ: A swig for every time she’s able to  work the title of her 2009 memoir If You Have to Cry, Go Outside, into upbraiding some poor wannabe. André Leon Talley Does The Green Thing, Too

“At Vogue we’re going to have certain issues devoted to green. We’ve asked certain designers to make green clothes. I don’t think everyone should be wearing hip sacks and burlap blouses. There’s still room for luxury … You have to wake up and be conscious of everything, the way you dispose of things. I do make trips to the Dumpster. And I am proud of that because it’s far from my house. But I make a special effort to go to the Dumpster and put the cardboard with the cardboard, and plastic with the plastics.”

“Top Model”‘s Classy Makeover Is Missing One Thing

“America’s Next Top Model” is supposedly getting a “high-class makeover” for its 15th “cycle,” which premieres September 8th. Last season, the long-running series debuted a new judge, Vogue‘s posh-accented and imposing Andre Leon Talley, and he, well, seemed a touch out of place amongst the otherwise campy production. So this season, instead of winning a spread in Seventeen (the show’s former print partner), the winner will get a spread in Vogue Italia, which is a big high-fashion step up. Additionally, the show will have more well-respected guest judges joining Talley and Tyra on the panel, like photographers Patrick Demarchelier and Francesco Carrozzini, and designers Zac Posen and Roberto Cavelli. All of this does add up to a pretty classy makeover for the show, which has, let’s face it, been running out of steam. Still, there’s one more tweak that needs to be made in order for “Top Model” to be taken seriously — FIRE JAY MANUEL. The silver-haired Oompa Loompa’s utterly asinine “creative direction” has got to go. [Deadline] Keep reading »

Andre Leon Talley Makes Me Slightly More Interested In “ANTM”

I’ll just go ahead and put it right out there: I do not watch “America’s Next Top Model.” Never have, and never had any plans to, until now. I could seriously just sit and watch Vogue‘s Andre Leon Talley all the diggity day long. I love his wink-wink faux-Euro accent (he’s from South Carolina, genius!) and his French pronunciations of savage (SAH-vauge) and salon (SAH-lawn) and his amazing capes and jewelry and, most of all, how he was so nice to that poor crying model. Also, “dreckitude” is clearly the new Fashion Word of the Day. Lastly, it cracks me up how Tyra so obviously defers to him and how he takes that smug old Nigel Barker — a rather commercial, lame photog whom no serious fashion magazine has ever employed — down a notch. LOVE. This new development just may make me the latest to the party convert ever. Keep reading »

André Leon Talley Joins “ANTM,” We Predict The Apocalypse

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the world is coming to an end. Bitch all you want about greenhouse gases and a sloppy economy, but we have a far more telling sign to share: Vogue editor-at-large André Leon Talley has signed on for three seasons of “America’s Next Top Model,” taking Miss J’s spot on the judging panel. (He’ll be returning to the runway to make young girls from Iowa feel terrible about their inability to walk well in seven-inch heels.) If a high-up Vogue staffer getting in bed with a reality TV show in its 13th season is not a sign of an imminent and fiery end, then we really don’t know what is. Oh, wait, we do: Anna Wintour actually claims she’s OK with Talley’s decision to pimp himself — and, by extension, the Vogue brand– out to TV’s most played-out reality show. Keep reading »
