Girl Talk: Why Amy Winehouse’s Death Came As A Shock

amy winehouse photo

“It’s not really a shock.” When a famous person dies from causes related to drug or alcohol addiction, this, or something similar, is one of the more common responses people have. While there are plenty of crueler things people can and do say, this bored and blase lack of surprise over the death of a human being tends to bother me the most.

That is because my father is an addict. He’s been an addict my entire life. And to not be shocked by someone’s death at the hands of addiction would mean I would have to have to reached some sort of placid acceptance that my dad will also inevitably suffer the same fate — that his getting “better” is out of the question. 8 Things You Should Know About Blake Fielder-Civil, Amy Winehouse’s Ex-Husband

When we heard the very sad news that Amy Winehouse had been found dead in her apartment on Saturday, we were a little curious how Blake Fielder-Civil—Winehouse’s ex-husband who she had called the love of her life—would respond. The incarcerated drug addict reportedly collapsed sobbing when he was informed by prison guards that Winehouse had died. He told the UK’s The Sun newspaper, “I’m beyond inconsolable … my tears won’t dry.” He continued, “I will never ever again feel the love I felt for her. Everybody who knew me and knew Amy knew the depth of our love. I can’t believe she’s dead.”

The ill-fated couple was only married for two years but were involved for much longer; one of their early breakups inspired her album Back To Black. So, who is this man, Blake Fielder-Civil, whom Amy Winehouse called the love of her life? Keep reading »

Amy Winehouse, At Her Very Best

Some of us were lucky enough to see Amy Winehouse perform live before she passed this weekend at the age of 27. Fewer of us were lucky enough to see her when she was really at her best, before drug and alcohol addiction started to chip away at her ability to channel her truly extraordinary talent. In 2007, Winehouse performed on “Live on the BBC” and this video of that session is 51 minutes of her being just fantastic. (FYI, the volume is sort of low up until the 6:31 mark.) Russell Brand Pays Tribute To His Friend Amy Winehouse

“…As I made my way to the audience through the plastic smiles and plastic cups I heard the rolling, wondrous resonance of a female vocal. Entering the space I saw Amy on stage with Weller and his band; and then the awe. The awe that envelops when witnessing a genius. From her oddly dainty presence that voice, a voice that seemed not to come from her but from somewhere beyond even Billie [Holiday] and Ella [Fitzgerald], from the font of all greatness. A voice that was filled with such power and pain that it was at once entirely human yet laced with the divine. My ears, my mouth, my heart and mind all instantly opened. Winehouse. Winehouse? Winehouse! That twerp, all eyeliner and lager dithering up Chalk Farm Road under a back-combed barnet, the lips that I’d only seen clenching a fishwife fag and dribbling curses now a portal for this holy sound. So now I knew. She wasn’t just some hapless wannabe, yet another pissed up nit who was never gonna make it, nor was she even a ten-a-penny-chanteuse enjoying her fifteen minutes. She was a f**king genius.”

Russell Brand, a former drug addict who’s been sober since 2002, penned an absolutely beautiful tribute to his friend Amy Winehouse, who passed away this weekend at age 27. Read more, after the jump… Keep reading »

Extremely sad news out of the UK today: singer Amy Winehouse was found dead in her London home at the age of 27. Though the cause of her death is unknown at this time, Winehouse had a well-documented history of alcohol and drug abuse, going to treatment as recently as May. Last month, she canceled her European tour after a breakdown on stage in Serbia, and a statement on her website read: “Amy Winehouse is withdrawing from all scheduled performances. Everyone involved wishes to do everything they can to help her return to her best and she will be given as long as it takes for this to happen.” Earlier this week, she attended an event with her goddaughter, but sources had told various media outlets that Winehouse was “drinking herself to death.”
