“America’s Next Top Model” Finale: The Battle Of The Eyebrows

“America’s Next Top Model” has been on for 14 cycles now. At this point, we all know the show’s tropes by heart: At least one girl will always be late after the go-see challenge. The ugly duckling always becomes a swan. The girl dubbed “commercial” doesn’t have a chance. Someone will always have an on-camera meltdown during the final CoverGirl commercial. At this point, I’ve watched the show long enough to have determined that the second girl shown in a solo interview in each episode is INVARIABLY the one eliminated. Don’t believe me? Watch. It is just a fact. And yet, the magic of “ANTM” is that, even though we can easily predict what is going to happen, we still watch and are even surprised. Keep reading »

Andre Leon Talley Makes Me Slightly More Interested In “ANTM”

I’ll just go ahead and put it right out there: I do not watch “America’s Next Top Model.” Never have, and never had any plans to, until now. I could seriously just sit and watch Vogue‘s Andre Leon Talley all the diggity day long. I love his wink-wink faux-Euro accent (he’s from South Carolina, genius!) and his French pronunciations of savage (SAH-vauge) and salon (SAH-lawn) and his amazing capes and jewelry and, most of all, how he was so nice to that poor crying model. Also, “dreckitude” is clearly the new Fashion Word of the Day. Lastly, it cracks me up how Tyra so obviously defers to him and how he takes that smug old Nigel Barker — a rather commercial, lame photog whom no serious fashion magazine has ever employed — down a notch. LOVE. This new development just may make me the latest to the party convert ever. Keep reading »

Tyra Is Officially Trying To Harm The “Top Models”

Tyra Banks, you’re so mean. On last night’s episode of “America’s Next Top Model,” TyTy had the models stomp the runway in sexy, tight Rachel Roy gowns, while huge clock gongs swung at them. I suppose it was meant to be an exercise in timing your strut, but one model failed badly — twice! First she tumbled down the stairs approaching the runway, then she was knocked off the runway by one of the swinging pendulums. Model down!

After a bajillion seasons, I am seriously finally tiring of this show. If it weren’t for the new judge, Vogue‘s Andre Leon Talley, who has a hilarious faux Euro accent and talks about having a salon (SA-lon, as he pronounces it) in his apartment, I would be over this shizz. Keep reading »

“ANTM” Gets Some Free American Apparel Ho-Wear

OK, so I don’t know for sure that the model wannabes competing in Cycle 14 of “America’s Next Top Model” are wearing American Apparel, but their monokinis, leotards, and jewel-tone tights look an awful lot like Dov Charney‘s wares. Too bad the new crop of hopefuls aren’t as interesting as the “models” on the American Apparel site, but at least Gabrielle tried. I will say, though, that the contestants do look sort of intriguing, which means I’ll be screaming, “I hate you, Tyra Banks,” at my TV screen for at least one more season. André Leon Talley Joins “ANTM,” We Predict The Apocalypse

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the world is coming to an end. Bitch all you want about greenhouse gases and a sloppy economy, but we have a far more telling sign to share: Vogue editor-at-large André Leon Talley has signed on for three seasons of “America’s Next Top Model,” taking Miss J’s spot on the judging panel. (He’ll be returning to the runway to make young girls from Iowa feel terrible about their inability to walk well in seven-inch heels.) If a high-up Vogue staffer getting in bed with a reality TV show in its 13th season is not a sign of an imminent and fiery end, then we really don’t know what is. Oh, wait, we do: Anna Wintour actually claims she’s OK with Talley’s decision to pimp himself — and, by extension, the Vogue brand– out to TV’s most played-out reality show. Keep reading »

“America’s Next Top Model” Winner Lands Real Fashion Campaign

Fashion insiders (and savvy reality TV watchers) know that for all the delish ridiculosity that is “America’s Next Top Model,” most of these girls are never gonna make it in the real world of high fashion modeling. Ever notice how the winners are a far cry from your Sashas and Karlies and Stams of the actual fashion runways? Yeah, this is a make-believe-for-TV model sandwich. However, last season’s winner — the, ahem, slightly petite Nicole Fox, who some of you may remember as the “slow talker” from the shorty season — just broke through the chains that bind them! Alexander McQueen just chose her to be the face of his spring/summer 2011 collection, making her the first “ANTM” alum to land an international campaign and, well, to do some real-life, serious modeling. Judging from the latest McQueen ads involving lots of reptiles, he’ll come up with a challenge that makes Tyra’s antics look downright tame. [Houston Chronicle] Keep reading »

Slow-Talker Nicole Is America’s Next Top Shorty

And there she is, folks. The winner of “America’s Next Top Model” cycle 13, aka, the shorty season. In last night’s episode, red-headed space case Nicole—who, uh, loves motorcycles and thrill-seeking?—beat out sweet-as-humble-pie Laura, the bull-castrater from Kentucky. Far too many times in this season, Tyra declared that something was happening, “for the first time in ‘Top Model’ history,” as if that were eons and eons. The twist for the finale—instead of three girls doing the Cover Girl photo shoot and commercial, only two made it through to the last episode. I would have questioned this decision since it doesn’t lend itself to maximum drama, except that these were actually my two favorite girls from the season—Nicole, amusing since she perpetually seemed like she had taken too much ritalin, and Laura, adorable showing up to judging in clothes sewed by her grandma.
