10 Reasons We’ll Seriously Miss “Ugly Betty”

Just when I thought the week couldn’t get any worse, ABC decided to cancel “Ugly Betty.” I had a bad feeling that might happen when the show was suddenly on at 10 p.m. on Friday nights, when no one cool (besides me) is home to watch it. The show will end in April due to the ailing ratings in the past two seasons. I bet the reason they lost viewers was that “Betty” moved times and days so much; I actually didn’t know it was still on during most of season three. Steve McPherson, the prez of ABC, and executive producer Silvio Horta issued the statement: “We are announcing now as we want to allow the show ample time to write a satisfying conclusion.” [CBC News]

The only satisfying conclusion for me would be if they said, “JK! We love ‘Betty!’” They have moved the show to Wednesdays at 10 p.m. (EST), which is going to confuse even more viewers. But since there’s nothing that can be done at this point, let’s celebrate what it was with the top ten things we loved about “Ugly Betty.” Keep reading »

America Ferrera: “There was this part in this movie with this director who shall remain nameless. It was a story set in Texas about this family and they weren’t sure who they were going to cast as the male role, so they were holding off on the female role, depending on if the male role was Latino or not. They didn’t want to put two Latinos in the same movie because then it would be ‘a Latino movie.’ So in my delusionary state, I thought if I dyed my hair blonde, I could show them that I could play anything. … So I stripped my hair. I looked f**king crazy. I only took one Polaroid and burned it.

Amber Tamblyn: “You wore whiteface…”

America Ferrera: “I did! I’m not even kidding! I had such resentment. And that was one of those moments where I just thought, ‘Wow.’ I didn’t even get the chance to fail at that part because of the color of my skin. If I didn’t get it because I gave a bad audition, then maybe my talents aren’t up to par. That I can work on. That I can change. That I can get better at. But how do I get better at being a blonde white girl? I can’t, because it’s not who I am. It was just so isolating.”

“Ugly Betty” star America Ferrera was having an exceptionally good hair day at the “Save the Children” benefit last night in Soho, New York City. She skipped the way messy bedhead trend in favor of something a little more formal, but still managed to look cute and age-appropriate. To get the look: Blow-dry hair; separate the top layer on the crown; work in a bit of volumizer, like Matrix Amplify Full Body Texturizer; and use a rat-tailed comb to create some lift. Tie with a hair band — it doesn’t have to look perfect — then use a flat-iron to make the ends look silky smooth like they do here, which is a nice contrast to the more textured crown.
