An Interview With Jewelry Designer Shaun Leane

My favorite jewelry designer — well, except for Tiffany, of course — is Shaun Leane, the man behind some of the most outrageous jewelry and accessories that you may have seen being worn on the runway by Alexander McQueen models. On the W blog, there’s a new fast and dirty interview with the British jewelry designer in which he talks about making the silver armor hand piece that you see here for fashion icon Daphne Guinness, how long it takes to make a coiled metal corset that a runway model can actually wear, and why his favorite McQueen show involved paint-spraying robots. My favorite Leane piece is this diamonds-and-thorns-encrusted black heart locket. It has a little window in the back that lets you put a tiny keepsake inside it. Now if only I had £7,800.00. Fashion Videos From Funny To Creepy

Yves Saint Laurent just released its Spring 2010 men’s video and the star is not so much an Adonis-like fellow complete with lovely face and six pack abs as it is, well, an 11 year old boy. But after you get over the initial shock and displeasure about the fact that you were turned on in advance and the grade schooler’s appearance made you feel kind of dirty, you’ll start to like the quirky little video. The kid is son of the director, Samuel Benchetrit, and the good ‘ol fashioned hijinks he gets up to at The Bristol Hotel after finding a key on the street are worth a brief at-work giggle. From writing on mirrors with ketchup to watching a bit of hotel TV porn and convincing Melinde, apparently the lover of the rightful renter of the hotel room, to fly to Paris, the little one gets stuff done. WTF?!: Target Misses With Alexander McQueen

In the past, Target has worked women into a frenzy by having high-end designers make affordable fashions for us po’, fat, regular folk. Isaac Mizrahi made Target chic with his classic cuts; Rogan Gregory created an uproar with his animal print fabulousness; Luella Bartletley made us want to wear puffed up party dresses again; and we really got into Paul & Joe’s cute, feminine prints. But that was then, and this Alexander McQueen collection is now! I’d rather gaze lovingly at his designs, day dreaming of the day when I can afford a pair of his peep-toe pumps, than have this crap cluttering my closet. Keep reading »

Yes, Folks, These Are Scary Times

It’s fun to look at men’s fashion show photos, if only to look at the models and their taut bodies. But the guys walking at Gareth Pugh, John Galliano, and Alexander McQueen didn’t look hot. No, they looked scary. In fact, they looked a lot like zombies. Could this be a pop culture trend in the making? Are zombies going to become the new vampires? One pop culture seems to think so. Or maybe the models are just depressed about the grim state of the economy. [NY Mag] Keep reading »

Poll: Which Pricey Designer Do You Wish Had A Target Line?

The first photos of Alexander McQueen’s McQ Alexander McQueen for Target line surfaced today on WWD, and we are not impressed. The clothes in the two photos look more like they came from American Apparel than from one of the most noteworthy fashion designers of our time. Perhaps the other pieces in the collection will make up for the cotton mesh dress at right. While looking at the photo credits, we noticed that the shiny unitard is not part of the McQ for Target line. Nor are black patent Guillotine Hinfray boots or the glorious red Christian Louboutins. This got us to thinking who we’d really love to have a line at Target. Keep reading »

The Daily Squeeze: Michelle Obama’s Election Day Dress, The Lob, And Target’s New Designer

  • The dress Michelle Obama wore last night was from Narciso Rodriguez’s Spring 2009 collection (see look #39). Personally, I think Michelle should have braved the cold and gone sans cardigan — it sort of ruined the dress’s lines — but she still looked lovely! [WSJ]

Project Runway: And The Finalists Are…

The judges finally revealed on last night’s episode the three designers that will show their collections at Bryant Park. And as I suggested last week, Jerell was unfortunately auf’d. Despite my crush on Jerell, I have to admit that he deserved it. I would have been really embarrassed for him to seriously show his collection, which was more suited as a decoy. Although the final elimination was the big draw for me, the rest of the episode was equally exciting. Keep reading »

Project Runway’s Kenley Rips Off Alexander McQueen

The judges said it and the pictures speak for themselves (McQueen on the left, Kenley on the right). Girlfriend may not have been original, but the craftsmanship on her knockoff was still better than Jerrel’s doo-dad hot mess. Keep reading »

Spring Trend We Can Get Behind: Full Skirts

There’s one thing Donna Karan, Louis Vuitton, Christian LaCroix, and Alexander McQueen agree on for spring: fabulous full skirts. While high-waisted jeans may still cause us to cringe at the mom factor, high-waisted skirts can make any woman look like a pin-up girl. Since the feminine silhouette of the skirt naturally blossoms at the bottom, it accentuates your waist and can even create one for boyishly figured types. It’s not magic, it’s just plain old-fashioned fashion. Five we really love, after the jump…
