Alexander McQueen’s Crazy Shoes Are Hot Items?!

Style.com

If conceptual fashion is wearable art, then the runway is the museum it stays in. Some designers present collections with saleability in mind; others like to make a point by going the artsy route, in which case what lands on the shelves might not be quite what you saw at the fashion shows. Apparently not so in Alexander McQueen‘s case. When his extreme platform heels recently came down the runway in Paris, they garnered a lot of attention—but did we ever once think that these shoes weren’t just for show and were, gulp, available for sale?

Lady Gaga Wants To Write A Bad Romance

In her latest video, “Bad Romance,” Lady Gaga prances around, actin’ a fool, in a bunch of weird outfits. In other words, same stuff, different song. Fashion-wise, the Lady and her dancers are costumed as synthetic white asparagus stems, her nails are encased in mesh cages, and her key accessory is a hairless cat. That she can do that dancing in those 10-inch Alexander McQueen heels is impressive.

Ever Bought Shoes You Couldn’t Walk In?

high heels

I very recently bought a pair of Christian Louboutin heels for $85 at a sample sale—ah-mazing deal, right? Well, turns out, not so much. They’re a size too small and perilously high, way too high for my heel-walking abilities. But, yeah, I still went ahead and bought them even though I could barely walk around the try-on area with them on (let alone a city sidewalk). Still, I love them and because of that adoration, I actually wore them out last weekend. Bad move. I had to go home about an hour after I arrived due to the fact that I was hobbling, painfully hobbling, around. I’m going to get them stretched a half size, but I am certainly not the only person out there who’s bought and never worn a pair of shoes ...

How Far Is Too Far When It Comes To Designer Knockoffs?

alexander mcqueen sheos

Leave Alexander McQueen alone! Sheesh, can’t the guy get a break? First Lady Gaga had to mess up his Fashion Week glory; now Steve Madden is all up in his face. The reason? McQueen is suing the affordable shoe company for copying the design for his “Faithful” bootie, a sexy open-toed number with leather snap-flaps and a stiletto heel. According to WWD, “the complaint alleges that the Steven Madden model is a ‘studied imitation’ that reproduces all those elements in the same manner.” OK, we get it: Madden made a knockoff, but isn’t that what their business is about? If they’ve been copying trends for so long, should it really matter now?

We do get the moral principle of copyright infringement (clearly); however, we do have to wonder how much of McQueen’s sales were really impacted by Madden’s cheaper model. Are Steve Madden customers really the type who would, or even could (uh, we can’t), buy the high-end version? [WWD]

What You Missed: Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” Premiere At Alexander McQueen

As we reported yesterday, Alexander McQueen‘s big live-streaming fashion show was ruined by Lady Gaga when she let it slip on Twitter that her new single, “Bad Romance,” would premiere there. Unfortunately, unless you’re a fashion editor or part of the style elite, you didn’t get to see or hear anything because the rush of Gaga fans to the website caused it to crash. So without further adieu, here’s what you missed. Do we likey?

Lady Gaga Ruins Alexander McQueen’s Live Stream!

lady gaga vogue shoot

Alexander McQueen was all set to revolutionize insider-y Fashion Week by broadcasting his spring/summer 2010 runway show live on the web. The fashion blogs were psyched, and so were we. Unfortunately, fashion history was not made, and who should be at fault but Lady Gaga. When the pop star posted to Twitter that her new single, “Bad Romance,” would be debuting at the McQueen show, the streaming website was inundated by thousands of visitors, causing it to crash.

No fashion for the masses this time, kiddies. Maybe next season designers who want to stream their shows live will think about increasing their bandwidth (and no, that doesn’t refer to dress size). [Elle UK]

Alexander McQueen Show Live Streams Today

In just an hour, fashion designer Alexander McQueen will be live streaming his spring/summer 2010 collection online. Seeing as McQueen is a master of the runway spectacle—previous shows have featured paint-spewing robots, models as chess pieces, and Kate Moss via hologram—it should be an eyeful. The show is titled “Plato’s Atlantis,” and Lee and co. have been teasing the process on Twitter, from model castings to last-minute preparations. The show begins at 8:15 p.m. Paris time—or 2:15 p.m. EST and 11:15 a.m. PST. Tune in! [SHOWStudio]

Will Fashion Become Virtual For The Masses?

Burberry Spring 2010

Fashion Week is a generally an invite-only occasion. Shows like Marc Jacobs are impossible to get in to even for celebrities, and the lines for the chicest parties are astronomically long. So usually, unless you’re in the industry or uber A-list, being a part of it all entails stalking blogs and Twitter for information on the designer’s latest collections and all the late night party details.

But change is in the air! There have been a few advancements recently in opening the insidery world of fashion to the world.

The Bag Everyone’s Making A Big Old Fuss About This Fall

    Kelly Osborne

We’ve already discussed The Shoe that we non-famous people are going all bats**t crazy over, but here’s The Bag of the season, according to Alexander McQueen’s Twitter feed and, um, visual proof— Freida Pinto, Kelly Osbourne, Little Boots and Sam Taylor Wood all wore his Skull Knuckle Duster Clutch to those GQ awards we were discussing yesterday. (On that note, if you haven’t witnessed Kate Moss’ temper tantrum yet, please watch it ASAP.) This shiz is smokin’ hot if, say, you’re into skulls and leather and all that crap (and I assure you, I am), but the problem is that I’m pretty sure the designer’s publicists sent these gorgeous young folks this clutch free of charge, because that’s basically how this system works. Sadly, most of us peons will never quite achieve McQueenian nirvana since the price tag of this delectable little number is no less than $1,895. Check it out here if you want to buy it and/or don’t believe me. Get a much closer look at it after the jump, because you know at least we can look forward to knockoffs coming to an H&M near us soon.

    Alexander McQueen Is On Twitter!

    Alexander McQueen

The clouds have parted, the sun has emerged, and the heavens are singing. The world’s greatest fashion designer (in my—totally correct—opinion), Alexander McQueen, is now on Twitter! Lee [That is, apparently, McQueen’s nickname or something.—Editor] and his posse started emitting tweets earlier this week at @McQueenWorld. Racked has confirmed it’s the real deal. While they’re not tweeting up a storm just yet, it sounds like they’re gearing up to Twitter about Fashion Week from behind the scenes at McQueen. To quote Rachel Zoe: “I die.” [Racked]

Are Gay Designers Responsible For All Of Fashion’s Problems?

    Dior

It’s hard not to hate Perez Hilton. Dude can be a real d-bag. So, when Jezebel blogger Tracie Egan wrote on her own blog that she’s not nervous about Hilton’s new CocoPerez “lady blog,” we were pretty much in agreement. After all, Jezebel is pretty awesome as far as the feminist blog set goes, and Perez Hilton draws penises on women’s faces. But Egan moved quickly from criticizing Perez for thinking he “gets” women to bitching about gay men in general. According to Egan, gay men are to blame for most of the problems in the fashion industry.

Rihanna’s Layered Look: Too Much Or Just Right?

    RIhanna Layered Necklaces

Can we raise our hands for too much? We’re all about taking fashion risks here at The Frisky, but like the legendary soap opera, they must be bold and beautiful. What Rihanna is giving us here feels a touch sloppy. She rocked London at the “Inglourious Basterds” premiere with what was otherwise a pretty tasteful and well-put-together outfit (Alexander McQueen thankyouverymuch), but we’re not sure if the pearls take the whole moment overboard. Are you loving the multi-layered look or was this just over the top for you? [Just Jared]

An Interview With Jewelry Designer Shaun Leane

Shaun Leane, Alexander McQueen's Jewelry Designer

My favorite jewelry designer—well, except for Tiffany, of course—is Shaun Leane, the man behind some of the most outrageous jewelry and accessories that you may have seen being worn on the runway by Alexander McQueen models. On the W blog, there’s a new fast and dirty interview with the British jewelry designer in which he talks about making the silver armor hand piece that you see here for fashion icon Daphne Guinness, how long it takes to make a coiled metal corset that a runway model can actually wear, and why his favorite McQueen show involved paint-spraying robots. My favorite Leane piece is this diamonds-and-thorns-encrusted black heart locket. It has a little window in the back that lets you put a tiny keepsake inside it. Now if only I had £7,800.00. [W]

Fashion Videos From Funny To Creepy

Yves Saint Laurent just released its Spring 2010 men’s video and the star is not so much an Adonis-like fellow complete with lovely face and six pack abs as it is, well, an 11 year old boy. But after you get over the initial shock and displeasure about the fact that you were turned on in advance and the grade schooler’s appearance made you feel kind of dirty, you’ll start to like the quirky little video. The kid is son of the director, Samuel Benchetrit, and the good ‘ol fashioned hijinks he gets up to at The Bristol Hotel after finding a key on the street are worth a brief at-work giggle. From writing on mirrors with ketchup to watching a bit of hotel TV porn and convincing Melinde, apparently the lover of the rightful renter of the hotel room, to fly to Paris, the little one gets stuff done. [The Cut]

Check out some more fashion videos after the jump, but keep in mind that they aren’t all this endearing…

Alexander McQueen: From Wacky To Wearable

    Alexander McQueen Fall 2009

Did you say you wanted a dress with a little embellishment?; Katie Holmes

Most of what designers send down the runway is not meant to be worn so literally out on the street. When showing their collections, designers wants to put on a SHOW, and then consumers can style the items to their liking when they buy them off the rack. This is especially true of crazy couture designers like Alexander McQueen, who showed his Fall 2009 Ready To Wear collection yesterday in Paris. The man is a genius, but it’s often hard to imagine that he creates clothing that’s, uh, meant to be worn in real life, not in some creepy nightmare. We juxtapose images from his kooky, somewhat disturbing black, white, and red-themed Fall ‘09 collection (seriously, you might have nightmares), against some of the gorgeous wares his celebrity fans have worn.

WTF?!: Target Misses With Alexander McQueen

Alexander McQueen's Line For Target Sucks

In the past, Target has worked women into a frenzy by having high-end designers make affordable fashions for us po’, fat, regular folk. Isaac Mizrahi made Target chic with his classic cuts; Rogan Gregory created an uproar with his animal print fabulousness; Luella Bartletley made us want to wear puffed up party dresses again; and we really got into Paul & Joe’s cute, feminine prints. But that was then, and this Alexander McQueen collection is now! I’d rather gaze lovingly at his designs, day dreaming of the day when I can afford a pair of his peep-toe pumps, than have this crap cluttering my closet.

Yes, Folks, These Are Scary Times

    Alexander McQueen

It’s fun to look at men’s fashion show photos, if only to look at the models and their taut bodies. But the guys walking at Gareth Pugh, John Galliano, and Alexander McQueen didn’t look hot. No, they looked scary. In fact, they looked a lot like zombies. Could this be a pop culture trend in the making? Are zombies going to become the new vampires? One pop culture seems to think so. Or maybe the models are just depressed about the grim state of the economy. [NY Mag]
