Emma Stone’s Alexander McQueen gown at the SAG awards on Sunday night was the perfect length to show off some seriously fierce shoes: sky-high ankle strap heels with fun ruffle embellishments (also by McQueen). Ankle straps have a bad reputation for making legs look shorter, and yes, they’re not exactly the best footwear choice for, say, cargo capri pants, but as you can see, they look amazing with the midi-length skirts that are super trendy right now. The fourth season of the wonderful “RuPaul’s Drag Race” premiered last night on Logo; the show’s thirteen new drag-queen contestants had to survive the “Rupocalypse,” the series’ first elimination. This Rupocalypse involved a challenging photo session with perennial reality-TV “star” Mike Ruiz, in which the queens had to pose on a spinning platform while being hosed down with “toxic waste” (read: neon-colored paint) by two near-naked male models. This might not seem like textbook McQueen, but the queens’ slow, off-kilter spin cycles in voluminous white dresses seemed very reminiscent of the iconic spring 1999 McQueen show’s finale, with model Shalom Harlow getting graffitied by two menacing robots. The challenge was in keeping with drag queens’ reputation for reappropriating fashion imagery in the best possible way, and not only because a good queen never misses the opportunity to make a phallic joke about hoses.

A lot must fall on the shoulders of designer Sarah Bunton as the new head of Alexander McQueen. Bunton took the reigns at the label after the designer’s suicide in 2010, and has done an admirable job in carrying on his legacy; this past April, she was tapped to design Kate Middleton’s wedding dress. The hype surrounding Kanye West’s debut women’s fashion line, DW, was on overdrive this past weekend, as the rapper-turned-designer presented his first collection during Paris Fashion Week. Of course it was a star-studded affair, and fashion heavy-hitters like Anna Wintour, Robin Givhan, and Carine Roitfeld were in attendance. Kanye consulted on the collection with other fashion insiders, including Central Saint Martins professor and British fashion guru Louise Wilson, who taught Alexander McQueen, Giles Deacon, and many other famous designers.
Although Kanye put in a lot of work and preparation on DW, it still falls flat … or should I say heavy … to me. Some fashion editors and critics were polite enough to say that he made a valiant first attempt and the line is a work in progress. But others weren’t too shy or awestruck by Mr. West as to basically call DW a knock-off. Keep reading »

The 43-year-old subsists on Red Bull and Ensure nutrition shakes and allegedly refused a plate of pasta during a photo shoot because “If I eat, I can’t work.” Her collection of designer items, which includes a vast array of Alexander McQueen garments, is currently on display at the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York.
