I hate flying. Hate it. Just thinking about being on an airplane makes my lungs tighten and my blood pressure rise. I’ve flown many times before (across the country, across the Atlantic, etc.), but it’s never been remotely pleasant for either me or the person stuck sitting next to me. I cry, I hyperventilate, I get diarrhea, I grip the arm of my poor seatmate. I actually once canceled a vacation to San Francisco and Los Angeles because I was too afraid to fly alone.

Yeah. It’s bad.

For me, my fear of flying isn’t so much about the fear of being in the sky, but about claustrophobia: the fear of being in a confined space in a long period of time with no way to leave. Although I realize it’s very different, for the past couple of years I’ve tried to train myself on stalled subway cars or trains to take calming breaths and not freak out. But even that challenge is difficult. Keep reading »

Worst Airplane Seatmates
Tell us about yours! Read More »

A few weeks ago, I was flying home from a blissful vacation, trying to ignore a screaming baby a few rows ahead of me and cringing at the cacophony of phlegm-y coughs coming from the seat behind me, when I realized that every flight is exactly the same. Looking around me, it was as though I’d been dropped smack dab in the middle of a roster of characters that work together to make air travel the uniquely strange, gross, frustrating experience it is. Who are these people that seem to be present on every flight, ever? Let’s break it down in list form… Keep reading »

10 Annoying Airplane Behaviors That Should Probably Be Illegal

Worst Seatmates Ever
What's the worst airplane seatmate you've ever had? Read More »

Over the past few years, I’ve traveled quite a bit and been pretty lucky when it comes to airplane seatmates. I’ve been fortunate enough to sit next to friendly, polite, interesting people who respect my personal space but will happily tell me thrilling tales about their childhood spent in a religious cult when prompted. That all changed this weekend, when, over the course of four short flights, I encountered a morning talker, an excessive ball scratcher, a sulfurous human gas machine, and a man who was smugly eating heaping bites of slimy homemade coleslaw out of a plastic bag. This is ridiculous, I thought, there should be laws against smug coleslaw crunching on airplanes! Since we managed to outlaw smoking on planes, here are some of the in-flight infractions that should be next… Keep reading »

Actually, Penguins Can Fly

Watch Video

Well, isn’t this quite a little riddle. When can a penguin — a bird that absolutely can’t normally fly — take to the sky? When it’s on a plane, silly. These two tuxedo-ed little guys were flying first class — naturally — from San Antonio to Atlanta. [YouTube]

The Unfriendly Skies: 18 Celebs Behaving Badly On Planes

Al Roker allegedly caused a stir on an American Airlines flight this week when he refused to give up his first-class seat so Alex Van Halen and wife could sit next to each other. What was his excuse? Oh, he claimed it was because he was allergic to dogs and changing seats would put him closer to a passenger traveling with a dog in a crate. Hmmm. Based on this photographic evidence, we’re not so sure that’s true. Then again, poodles are hypoallergenic. It was the Van Halens who saved the day. They quietly moved to business class. How very un-rock n’ roll of them. Why does it seem like famous people always cause the most travel trouble? Read on for a list of other celebrities who’ve had kerfuffles while traveling. [NY Post]

Leisha Hailey Of “The L Word” Kicked Off Flight For Kissing Girlfriend

Leisha Hailey of "The L Word"

Celebrities seem to get into trouble on airplanes way too often. Usually, they did something kind of wack—like when Gerard Depardieu emptied his bladder or when Josh Duhamel refused to get off his BlackBerry. But when Leisha Hailey of “The L-Word” got booted off a Southwest Airlines flight yesterday, she says it was for a very different reason. She says she was kicked off the flight for kissing her girlfriend.

“I have been discriminated against by @SouthwestAir. Flt. attendant said that it was a ‘family’ airline and kissing was not ok,” she tweeted yesterday after the incident. “This is an outrage. I demand a public apology by @SouthwestAir and a refund. Hate is not a family value. I will never fly this airline.”

She claims to audio and video of the entire incident, and is now calling for a boycott.

Would You Pay Extra For A “Child-Free” Flight?

I’ve said it a million times, but I’ll say it again: I love kids. But being stuck on a six-hour flight with a squalling toddler right behind me, killing my enjoyment of my millionth bag of peanuts and whatever crap movie is on, totally sucks. But is a screaming infant so annoying that I might pay extra for a seat on a child-free flight? Apparently, I might have the option, as some fliers are calling upon airlines to offer kid-free flights — or “family only” sections — so that their travel experience can be temper tantrum-free. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Calls In Bomb Threat On Plane Carrying Man To His Wedding

There are crazy exes and there are cuh-ra-zy exes. The woman who called in a bomb threat on an airplane carrying her ex-boyfriend to his wedding takes the cake. Canadian police said they received a report of a man carrying a bomb on a flight from Toronto to Karachi, Pakistan, where the man planned to get hitched. After an emergency landing in Stockholm, Sweden, 273 passengers were evacuated from the plane (seriously, this is my worst nightmare) and a SWAT team arrested the groom. No bombs were found on the plane, of course, and the ex-girlfriend admitted to authorities she was just trying to ruin his big day. Clearly, this bitch has never heard of getting wasted and showing up to the nuptials unannounced. Congratulations, lady: In the Crazy Ex Olympics, you would win! [Daily Mail UK] Keep reading »

Minka Kelly Calls Boyfriend Derek Jeter To Solve Her Airline Problems

“Friday Night Lights” actress Minka Kelly allegedly freaked out while boarding an airplane today because she wasn’t allowed to have her dog on the seat with her. There were tears. There was screaming. There was a phone call to her maybe-fiancé Derek Jeter to talk some sense into a barbarian flight staff. Why do we all of a sudden feel solidarity with JetBlue flight attendant Steven Slater?
