42 Truths & 1 Lie: On Esquire‘s Obnoxious Ranking Of Womankind’s Most “Alluring” Age

42 Truths & 1 Lie: On Esquire's Obnoxious Ranking Of The Most "Alluring" Woman

Have you ever played the game Two Truths/One Lie? The object of the game is to tell your audience three facts—two of which are true, and one of which is a lie. The audience must then distinguish which statement is false.  I would like for you to play a modified version of the game with me now. Here are my three statements and I invite you to determine which one is false:

  1. I am a 43-year-old woman.
  2. I am completely “forgiving of a theater of men trying to get in my pants.”
  3. I have a dozen summer dresses in my closet.

Perhaps you noticed that I employed a quote in my second statement. Permit me to give you context—at least as much as I can. Recently, Tom Junod’s article, “In Praise of 42-Year-Old Women” was featured on Esquire.com. In his article, Junod discusses how according to Esquire’s “…occasional ranking of the ages … this year’s most alluring [woman] is not want you’d expect … No, this year it’s 42. Because it’s not what it used to be.” It’s not? Keep reading »

"I don't want girls to see me hurt by jokes about age."

Sarah Silverman went on “Totally Biased With W. Kamau Bell” on Thursday to hash out … well, a lot of stuff.

First, there were Bell’s problems: eight years ago when Silverman’s comedy/documentary “Jesus Is Magic” came out, Bell wrote an impassioned blog post (on MySpace, which is what we did back then) about how he thought some of her jokes were racist. Now when you Google his name, that post comes up rather highly. But Sarah Silverman had no hard feelings, I guess, because she wanted to work with Bell a couple years ago. All should be well and good, right? Well, no. Silverman recently appeared at the Comedy Central roast of James Franco, where she cracked a bunch of gay jokes. One of the “Totally Biased” comedians responded to her with some (frankly dumb) jokes about how old she looks. Forty-two is practically dead. So W. Kamau Bell played that dumb clip for her while Silverman was his guest on the show and what resulted was a really refreshing conversation about sexism. Keep reading »

madelyn schaeffer

Last week, Madelyn Sheaffer went to Adventure Oasis Water Park in Independence, Missouri with her teenage daughter. Sheaffer, who recently lost 100 pounds, was proud to be wearing a bikini for the outing. The park officials, however, did not feel the same way.

While she was cooling off in the pool, two teenage employees approached her and asked her to put on some shorts or she would be asked to leave the park. She refused and continued to enjoy the day with her family. Sheaffer was then approached by a supervisor at the park who told her she had to put on both shorts and a shirt or leave because he found her attire too offensive for a family-friendly park. Sheaffer looked around the park only to see that there were plenty of other women wearing similar bikinis, yet she was the only one that was asked to cover up. Therefore, she again refused to leave. The supervisor called the police to escort Sheaffer out of the park. According to a post on Sheaffer’s Facebook page, even the police officers found the situation to be questionable. She wrote:

“We can’t actually say anything,” they said as we walked outside (as it is a city owned park) “… but I hope from the expressions on our face you can tell how we feel.” They were compassionate. They too, thought it was ridiculous.

Syndrome Of The Day: Midlife Mirror Angst Syndrome

Another day, another affliction that women suffer from. Today it’s Midlife Mirror Angst Syndrome which, according to a new study, is a syndrome that 90 percent of women in their 40s and 50s suffer from. It is a glorified way of saying that most middle-aged women hate what they see when they look in the mirror because they are old. Oh, and society is ageist in case you weren’t aware.

Changes wrought by age, combined with a youth-obsessed fashion industry, led to a dramatic drop in body confidence for women the older they get — resulting in Midlife Mirror Angst Syndrome … There’s no psychological underpinning for this, but the fact remains that at midlife, women can feel invisible — or at worse, unattractive.
