Catelynn Lowell and Tyler Baltierra from MTV’s “16 and Pregnant” and “Teen Mom” have been, surprisingly, one of the more controversial couples on the two shows. Catelynn was the only teen mom in the first season to carry her pregnancy to term and put the child up for adoption; the little girl, Carly, is now a toddler and the adoptive family is still in touch with the birth parents. Over the years, some people have wondered why Catelynn and Tyler are even on “Teen Mom” anymore, since she is not a day-to-day parent like the others on the show. Some have even suggested MTV might be exploitatively harming these two for keeping them on a show that’s sole focus is the child they gave up for adoption.
Catelynn and Tyler are in the news less now that younger casts of “Teen Mom” are in the limelight. To their credit, they haven’t had public battles with drug abuse, domestic violence and mental illness quite like Amber Portwood, another teen mom from the first season. They seem like basically good kids with solid heads on their shoulders; last year the two even got engaged and set a date for 2013.
But lately Catelynn’s been making headlines recently for another reason: she’s an anti-abortion extremist. Keep reading »
Black cats have it pretty rough. Not only do they have the stigma of a negative superstition around them, but tons of people adopt or buy the cats for Halloween, only to discard them days after. And shelters report that it’s often difficult to get good photos of animals with black fur. But a cheeky new Black Friday promotion is hoping to give black cats — and other animals with black fur — a second chance. The Oregon Humane Society — and other shelters around the country — is offering to cut adoption fees in half for those who adopt black cats and other black animals. And the Animal Care and Control Team of Philadelphia is running a similar promotion, allowing pet lovers to adopt black cats and dogs for free. They’re also running a separate promotion, called “Feast With A Fat Feline,” offering free adoptoins on cats weighing 13 pounds or more. I want one!
Similar adoption events and discounts are being offered in Riverside, California, San Antonio, Texas, and Witchita, Kansas, and several other cities and towns around the country. Check with your local shelter to see if they’re offering similar adoption deals!
Remember the weird social experiment that was Chatroulette? It’s mostly populated with dudes who want to show their wangs to strangers, which is why we’re way more into the animal version of Chatroulette, appropriately titled Catroulette. Catroulette shows you tons of live video feeds of cats doing exactly what cats do — scratching themselves, grooming themselves, looking bored. But the best part? Every cat on Catroulette is up for adoption! Most of these cats seem to live in Germany or something (so international!). But even if you can’t adopt, it’s a great timewaster. So many adorable buddies! [Catroulette]
In the 1970s, China adopted a “one-child policy,” which strongly encouraged (translation: forced) families to limit the number of kids they had in order to help control China’s growing population. Families that failed to abide by the policy faced fines and levees on their incomes. Officially, claim Chinese authorities, the policy resulted in 250 million fewer births, and was touted as a success. But the policy also wreaked havoc on the fabric of Chinese society — families desired boy children over girl children in order to ensure the continuation of family lines. And thousands of girls were given up by their parents and sent to live in orphanages. Keep reading »
ZOMG I LOVE HER SO MUCH. Tami Taylor, ugh, I mean Connie Britton, the actress who played Tami Taylor, best mom/wife in the history of ever on “Friday Night Lights,” has announced that she adopted a baby boy from Ethiopia! “It was such a wonderful moment of completion,” Britton said of holding baby Yoby in her arms for the first time after a three-year adoption process. “I thought I was going to collapse into a puddle of tears. I was just grinning from ear to ear.”
I find this so inspiring. I want to be a mother so much someday, and women like Connie Britton are a reminder that doing so without a partner is possible. Congrats! [ONTD]
A big congratulations to Denise Richards! The actress and former wife of Charlie Sheen has adopted a baby girl. The new little one’s name is Eloise Joni Richards. Apparently, Denise let her and Charlie’s two daughters—Sam and Lola—pick their new sister’s name, hence “Eloise.” As for Joni—that’s Denise’s mama’s name. After the announcement of the adoption was made last night, Denise tweeted, “Thank you all for your sweet messages. The girls and I are over the moon and so is my dad Grandpa Irv…xo.” Here’s hoping that the life adjustment is a super easy one for all of them. But I do have to question the name Eloise. I mean, now the girl is fated to live at the Plaza and have a pet turtle Skipperdee. Though I guess as things go, that’s not so bad. [People] Keep reading »
