My favorite sketch from this weekend’s “Saturday Night Live” was definitely the one in which, one by one, a team of coworkers admits that when they need a good cry, they put on Adele’s “Someone Like You.” It’s true — I don’t think I can think of another song that makes my eyes moisten so quickly. I even lip-sync emphatically; it’s soothing. I especially like the quick shout out to “Friday Night Lights” — I still need the occasional cry when I think about Coach and Tami Taylor no longer being on TV. Sniff … sniff … Time to open iTunes and put on some Adele.

How did it escape my notice that Sophia Grace Brownlee, the little girl who sang Nicki Minaj’s “Super Bass” and became a viral internet sensation, has such an intense British accent? Sophia and her cousin/”hype girl” Rosie returned to Ellen’s couch, just a few weeks after their appearance in which they performed and met Nicki herself, to talk about the experience. Rosie kind of reminds me of Silent Bob to Sophia’s Jay, in that Rosie never says anything. Anyway, the kids also took to the stage to sing Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep,” which Sophia, of course, knocked out of the park. I just want to put Sophia in my pocket so she can bring me joy at all hours of the day. So much personality and energy in such a small package.
Consider me pleasantly surprised to see the immensely talented — and full-figured — singer Adele gracing the cover of December’s Cosmopolitan. I mention the full-figured thing only because of all the lady mags on stands, I would venture to guess that Cosmo has likely had the least amount of not-stick-thin cover models. Not only is it nice to see Adele on the cover, but it’s also worth noting that December issues tend to be packed with advertisers; additionally, it doesn’t appear that Adele has been airbrushed to hell and back. (Whether or not she was asked to answer inane questions remains to be seen.) [Cosmopolitan]
Damn you, Katy Perry! You’re dressed like a candy cane and standing between two ladies who look like lifesize anime characters and still your cover of Adele’s heartbreaking “Someone Like You” brought tears to my eyes. [NYMag.com] Keep reading »
Were you lucky enough to nab tickets to see Adele this month? Well, I’m very sorry to report that her upcoming 10-city US tour has been cancelled thanks to a vocal chord hemorrhage. “Singing is literally my life—it’s my hobbie, my love, my freedom and now my job,” Adele wrote, explaining her rationale for canceling her dates along the East Coast and in the South for the second time. “I have absolutely no choice but to recuperate properly and fully, or i risk damaging my voice forever … I have great confidence in believing you know how much this upsets me, how seriously i take it and how truly devastated and annoyed i am by this.” [Gossip Cop]
So will Adele reschedule these dates? Or are we just out in the cold? We look to recent history for some answers. Keep reading »
Adele‘s “Someone Like You” is the most gut-wrenching song ever. As in, I had to stop listening to it because it just brought me to a dark place. And now, following her bonkers performance of the song at the MTV VMAs, Adele has released the video for the song. It shows her walking along the river in Paris, by herself, in black and white. And then maybe meeting the guy she’s singing to at a cafe and watching him walk away? Adele, of course, looks stunning. And the overall effect is simple and very heart-tugging. Keep reading »
“We’re becoming friends again. It’s alright, I know what I’m doing. Enough time has gone by. Now with what’s going on with the album around the world, it’s important to be able to share it with him because it’s marvelous what has happened. He changed my life, I can’t deny that. The album helped me get over splitting up with my boyfriend. It helped me forgive and I hope that he has forgiven himself. I’m not boastful but selling 10 million albums for a little girl from Tottenham, I’m very proud of that.”
—Adele says she is once again in touch with the mystery guy who inspired the songs “Rolling in the Deep” and “Someone Like You.” I’m so glad to hear that she feels largely healed from the breakup, and that she’s big enough to acknowledge that, whatever this guy did wrong, he is a small part of her success. If only every woman who went through a painful breakup could create something as amazing as the album 21. [ONTD] Keep reading »
The MTV Video Music Awards are kind of hilarious, considering the complete lack of videos played on MTV these days. But at least we can count on one thing from them: insane fashion. Everyone has carte blanche to come dressed up as a pile of trash, or a geisha robot or whatever–and this year, that’s exactly what happened. After the jump, check out how Beyonce, Katy Perry and all the rest fared.
File this story under “the Internet is awesome.” Just a few days ago, an anonymous soldier posted this video of a military band covering Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep,” starring a camo-clad singer with a serious set of pipes. Carson Daly saw the video and was able to track down the mystery woman on Twitter. Her name is Angie Johnson, and she’s a member of a U.S. Air Forces Central Expeditionary Band called “Sidewinder,” currently stationed in the Middle East. She and Daly exchanged a few Twitter messages, and it looks like she might be appearing on a certain singing competition/reality TV show in the near future. Check out a screencap of their convo after the jump… Keep reading »
Adele‘s “Melt My Heart To Stone” is one of those breakup songs that just tugs at your heartstrings. But the new Kanye West remix really takes the edge off. It’s not as good as his Katy Perry remix of “E.T.,” probably because there’s no lyrics like “Imma disrobe ya, then Imma probe ya.” Keep up the remixes of female pop stars, Kanye! Maybe one day we’ll get a Taylor Swift collab out of you. [DesiHits] Keep reading »
