10 Reasons We Love Sandra Bullock

I will admit it. I am one of the 10 people in America who has not traditionally been a Sandra Bullock fan. Why? Because she got herself pigeonholed as the romantic comedy queen—playing the quirky, irreverent, clutzy girl over and over again, and making me want to gag in the process. But last night, Sandra actually won me over. I love that she recognized how unlikely it is that the star of “Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous” would five years later be Best Actress, without sounding insincere or too self-deprecating. After the jump, 10 reasons why I’m a Sandra convert. Keep reading »

Did Our Oscar Theories Hold Any Water?

Fine, so you didn’t exactly need a functioning crystal ball to predict last night’s big Oscar winners. Christoph Waltz won for Best Supporting Actor for “Inglourious Basterds,” Mo’Nique won Best Supporting Actress for “Precious,” Jeff Bridges won Best Actor for “Crazy Heart,” and Sandra Bullock won Best Actress for “The Blind Side.” They were the exact same four to walk to the podium for both the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild Awards, too. Best Picture was a semi toss-up—”Avatar” had won at the Golden Globes, while “The Hurt Locker” had cleaned up at other less mainstream awards shows—and volume ended up being the better predictor, as “The Hurt Locker” was the ultimate victor last night. Honestly, the only true surprise of the evening was in the Best Foreign Language Film category, where the Oscar was expected to go to “Un Prophete” or “The White Ribbon,” but instead “El Secreto de Sus Ojos” pulled off the upset.

So how did we at The Frisky fare with our predictions? A breakdown after the jump. Keep reading »

Quotable: SJP’s Druggy Oscars Dress

11 Things George Clooney Might’ve Been Pissed About At The Oscars

Was is just me, or did George Clooney seem totally pissed off at the Oscars last night? His sour puss act in the front row almost made me miss Jack Nicholson smirking in his dark sunglasses. And George’s lady, Elisabetta Canalis, wasn’t looking too chipper either—those two had “Debbie Downer” written all over their faces. Sure, George played nice for two seconds on the red carpet, but once he got inside … forget it. What the heck does he have to be so pissed about? Our best guesses after the jump. Keep reading »

Kathryn Bigelow Wore Jeweled Bands, But Not On Her Ring Finger

I’m not usually a fan of rings worn on fingers other than the fourth unless it’s a chunky cocktail ring, but there’s an exception to every rule, and this time it’s Academy Award winner Kathryn Bigelow. At last night’s Oscars, where she won Best Director, Kathryn had two sparkly bands on her index finger — and none on any others. The resulting look was a little quirky but still elegant, and it might inspire me to put one of the too-big rings that was passed down to me on my pointer, too. Keep reading »

Quotable: Jake And Rachel, Sittin’ In A Tree

“This is Rachel McAdams. She’s the mother of my child!”

Jake Gyllenhaal, overheard introducing Rachel to a friend outside the Oscars. Please, please, please let these two get together for real. They were so adorable sitting next to each other and presenting together last night, we almost couldn’t take it. [People] Keep reading »

10 Reasons We Love Kathryn Bigelow, The First Woman To Win Best Director

Last night, in perhaps the highlight of a very loooooong evening, Kathryn Bigelow won the award for Best Director, making her the first woman to win in the category, ever. (Lina Wertmuller, Jane Campion, and Sofia Coppola were nominated, but didn’t come out victorious. Sigh.) Shockingly, only 17 percent of directors are female, which explains why it took until 2010 for someone with a vajayjay to win. We hope lots more women out there are inspired to pick up a camera and start making movies now.

After the jump, 10 reasons we are thrilled Kathryn was the one to make Oscar history. Keep reading »

Oscar Theory #6: A Great Name Will Win Ya Best Picture

Guessing who will win the major awards at Sunday night’s Oscars is hardly like picking winning lottery numbers. The Academy tends to be pretty predictable: Best Actress generally goes to America’s Sweetheart (who later gets divorced); Best Actor goes to the guy with the most previous nominations; Best Supporting Actress goes to a breakout star; and Best Supporting Actor goes to the creepy guy. But there’s one category that’s almost impossible to predict—Best Picture. Since 1944, the Academy has nominated five films for the top honor, but this year—after extended debate about how comedies, musicals, animated flicks, and blockbusters get shafted with the limited pickings—the Academy opted to nominate 10 films for Best Picture. So in many ways, it’s anyone’s game on Sunday. Keep reading »
