Twenty-Five Percent Of Teen Girls Have A Zac Efron Poster & An STD

Some good news before we sit down with a bowl of popcorn, a bottle of wine, and that Tivo’d episode of High School Confidential — one in four teens girls have an STD! The data, from 2003-04, probably reflects current rates of infection, which would coincide with recent government funding for sex education being funneled into abstinence-only education. Sounds like “Operation: Stop Our Daughters From Having Sex” is totally failing, with scabby results to show for it! [CNN] Keep reading »

Puritan Pop Stars

Over a decade after Britney claimed she was saving herself for marriage, the Jonas Brothers, a popular teeny-bopper boy band, have decided to take a vow of celibacy too. The trio of short, dark, and handsome teens told Details Magazine that they even bought rings to commemorate their commitment to chastity from Disney World and Tiffany’s. (How punk rock!) Although it’s not actually working as kryptonite for their hordes of screaming girl groupies, the Christian rockers turned pop stars, who are now owned by Disney, want to stay shining examples of purity. Their tour director, Rob Brenner, who had worked with Spears, sees abstinence as a way to keep the boys focused and grounded, while avoiding the pitfalls (i.e. drugs, pregnancy, general craziness) of other stars who make it big when they’re young. The Bush Administration Spanks Washington State For Teaching Sex Education

So, the whole issue of government funded abstinence-only education is a confusing one, but we’re here to give you the low-down. Basically, the Bush Administration, in an attempt to offset state-funded sex education programs, has given many states millions of dollars in funding for abstinence-only education — public service announcements and school curriculum promoting abstinence. And for the record, in case it’s been awhile since you were in junior high, sex education always stresses that the only truly “safe” sex is no sex at all, but abstinence-only education stresses that and that alone. Well Washington State just had their abstinence-only grant revoked because the state requires schools to provide additional, medically accurate information about preventing unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. It seems the grant was only good for funding sex education that covered only one aspect — not having any. Better your kids associate sex with sin, fire, and brimstone than the very real threat of STDs and pregnancy if they don’t use condoms, the pill, and other forms of birth control. [SeattlePI.com]

Breaking News: Abstinence-Ed Doesn’t Work!

There’s a news story to support the headline above nearly everyday, but the latest has the most expansive evidence that abstinence-only education does not affect sexual behavior in teenagers. The non-partisan group National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy conducted the study and concluded:

“At present there does not exist any strong evidence that any abstinence program delays the initiation of sex, hastens the return to abstinence or reduces the number of sexual partners among teenagers.”

Currently there’s a bill before Congress that would put $141 million into abstinence-only education funding. Um, yeah. In a few weeks, we’ll be debating the issue of whether, despite the evidence, abstinence education is still the way to go when it comes to teaching minors about sex. Um, we know where we stand if you couldn’t read between the lines, but we’re eager to hear from our experts and from you Frisky girls as well. [MSNBC] Keep reading »
