Today’s Lady News: Herman Cain Signs Anti-Abortion Pledge

  • Herman Cain has finally signed an anti-abortion pledge confirming he is “100 percent pro-life” and that “all human beings have intrinsic dignity.” Trying not to make a joke about the various women who have accused him of violating their intrinsic dignity through sexual harassment. “Absolutely, and as a pro-choice feminist, that was certainly my concern going in. No matter what, I would not have done this movie if it violated my own beliefs — I would have just walked away — so I had to find a way into it that was in line with my own thinking and yet not violating anyone else’s beliefs. So that was probably one of the initial challenges of it. I’ve also heard the comment that Bella is the one who’s constantly sacrificing, and wow, I never saw her as someone who sacrificed anything. If anyone’s sacrificing anything, it’s Edward, because from the very beginning — and certainly in this film — she knows what she wants and goes for it, hell or high water. She’s perhaps even a little selfish because she’s so driven for what she wants. ‘Okay, so I die and Edward’s broken-hearted for the rest of eternity? Well, tough luck, I’m going for it anyway.’ She’s very clear, and frankly, I see her as a very strong character. Do other people see her as someone who sacrifices? Absolutely, but I’ve never written her that way, and it actually took me by surprise.”

— “Breaking Dawn” screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg (who also wrote the three previous flicks) on a debate in this film between the Cullens about whether to call the vampire-thing in Bella’s belly “baby” or a “fetus.” Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: How To Discuss Abortion Over Thanksgiving With Your Relatives

  • We all have relatives with whom we disagree on political or social issues. Mine is my dad. We, however, can spar in a friendly way about Barack Obama (him) and Fox News (me) and everyone is still pleasant at the end of the day. Not all families are so lucky, though. That’s why Planned Parenthood has created this cool list of eight easy steps for discussing reproductive rights over the holidays. It’s filled with talking points on how to engage family members in conversation about abortion, the morning-after pill, and sex ed — instead of fighting. [PlannedParenthood.org]
  • The European Union has refused to release a film called “In-Justice: The Story Of Afghan Women In Jail,” which it commissioned, because it said two of the subjects’ lives will be in danger if it does. One woman is doing 12 years in prison for being a rape victim; the other is in jail for leaving her abusive husband. [Yahoo Keep reading »

That’s a relief.

Mississippi voters failed to pass an anti-abortion “fetal personhood” amendment, which would have defined the beginning of life at conception and therefore criminalized all abortions — including those resulting from rape or incest. Initiative 26, as the ballot measure was known as, also would have criminalized IVF treatments and some forms of birth control because they both involve fertilized eggs. If it had passed, MS would have had the strictest restrictions against abortion in the country. Keep reading »

Tomorrow, Election Day, voters in Mississippi will vote on a fetal personhood amendment to define a fetus as a person in the state constitution, thereby criminalizing all abortion. Initiative 26 would define a “person” as “every human being from the moment of fertilization, cloning, or the functional equivalent thereof.” If it passes, surgical abortions would be banned, the abortion pill would be banned, and, according to a Personhood USA spokesman who spoke to NPR, even birth control pills would be banned. In Gillian Robespierre’s amazing and hysterical new short, “Obvious Child,” a woman has a clumsy one-night stand and learns that she’s pregnant. And shock of all shocks–she decides to have an abortion! Yup, “Obvious Child” shows Jenny Slate’s character Donna deciding to have an abortion with little fretting or to-do. She’s not soul-searching or struggling, she’s simply exercising her right NOT to have a baby. It’s honest, hilarious and completely true to life–and a nice antidote to all the heavy-handed TV and film portrayals that make it seem as though having an abortion means you’re a bad or immoral person. This is a must-watch. [Vimeo]
