NYC Forces “Crisis Pregnancy Centers” To Disclose Motives To Women

Some good news, finally: New York City’s City Council voted yesterday to require so-called “crisis pregnancy centers” to be more transparent about their anti-abortion motives to women.

There are different types of CPCs, but many are run by anti-abortion extremists which intentionally appear to look like abortion clinics from the outside but in actuality will dissuade women from ending a pregnancy through any tactic at all. The city council demanded that CPCs inform women on advertising and signs in entrances and waiting rooms that they do not actually provide abortions, emergency contraceptives or prenatal care. CPC employees will also be required to provide that information if asked about it over the phone or in person. NYC’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg is expected to sign the bill into law. Keep reading »

Bunny In A Blender: Anti-Abortion Group’s New Scare Tactic

Anti-abortion group The American Life League has released a new video in support of Congress defunding Planned Parenthood and it wants you to think that a doctor scraping an eight-week-old bunch of cells from a uterus is just like slaughtering a cute animal in a blender. Yep, a person dressed in hospital scrubs places a bunny in a blender, the screen goes black, the blender whirs, and the camera pans to a several-months-old Caucasian baby. Nuanced! My first thought was something that my Token Pro-Life Catholic Friend said to me about how he is against abortion because it’s “an act of violence.” Huh? I don’t see women’s health supporters using imagery so cruel. [YouTube via Feministing] Keep reading »

Girl Talk: Why I Stand With Planned Parenthood

This is not a story of how abortion is right or wrong. Nor is it about what other people are doing with their bodies, or what I think about that (as though it’s any of my business). No: this is just my story of how Planned Parenthood made some hard times a little easier for me, and how “real” healthcare (i.e., via insurance plans) can make things difficult. Keep reading »

Fetuses “Testify” On Ohio Abortion Bill

Two fetuses — er, “unborn children,” as anti-abortion folks call them — testified in Ohio today regarding a bill that would criminalize abortion after a fetal heartbeat can be detected.

Very funny, Ohio. Keep reading »

Politician Says Planned Parenthood Is “Invested In Promiscuity”

Some politicians are more concerned with your naughty bits than, oh, children from the wealthiest nation in the world who go to bed hungry and American soldiers being killed in Afghanistan. Take Representative Steve King (R-Iowa), for instance. Rep. King is one of the busybody pols trying to de-fund Planned Parenthood because it provides abortions. And they’ve been successful, which is scary: just two weeks ago the House of Representatives actually voted to do it! Personally I think it’s B.S. enough that these jerks are more concerned with your and my sex life than they are with creating jobs, funding schools and bringing soldiers home from war. But the reasons get totally laughable. Keep reading »

Activists Mailing Photos Of Used Tampons To Georgia Politician

Of all the anti-abortion legislative f***ery to happen recently, one of the saddest stories is out of Georgia. As I blogged in Today’s Lady News on Wednesday, GA State Representative Bobby Franklin has introduced a bill that would would classify abortion as “prenatal murder” in order to criminalize it, which would thus require miscarriages to be investigated by the state. They’re pre-born citizens, don’t you know? Obviously this is incredibly sensitive to grieving mothers and father who just lost a much-wanted pregnancy.

But for such a wonderful idea, it will be a difficult undertaking: what about all the potential babies — the unfertilized eggs — women lose each month with their citizenry depletion menstruation? Who will investigate those prenatal murders? Luckily some feminist activists have a great idea on how to help. Keep reading »

South Dakota Bill Would Require “Crisis Pregnancy Center” Counseling Before An Abortion

South Dakota, will you stop f**king with us? Enough already! South Dakota’s House of Representatives has approved a bill requiring a woman seeking an abortion to be “counseled” first at a so-called “crisis pregnancy center.”

Proponents of the bill say they are trying to assess whether women are being forced to end a pregnancy, as a doctor would have to sign off that the abortion is “voluntary, uncoerced, and informed.” The bill, which refers to the woman as a “pregnant mother” (agenda, anyone?), requires the woman to have pre-abortion counseling and be informed what kind of help is available to them if they continue the pregnancy. The bill also requires the woman to wait 72 hours after first meeting with the doctor who’ll perform the abortion. That time period is what anti-abortion activists claim is giving women time to think, but in reality it makes scheduling the procedure more difficult for working women or women with children, as they have to go to not one appointment, but two. And considering the vast majority of counties in America do not have an abortion clinic, terminating a pregnancy can involve driving long distances in some parts of the country. Keep reading »

Anti-Abortion Foes Target Blacks With “Dangerous Womb” Billboards

The anti-abortion movement tries many tactics — guilt, misinformation, assuring women they’re smart and capable enough, more guilt — but one of the latest permutations has been framing abortion as a racial issue. Some anti-abortion activists are framing legal abortion as a way to deter black women‘s reproduction. The latest example is this billboard hanging in New York City’s highly trafficked SoHo neighborhood which reads, “The most dangerous place for an African-American is in the womb.” The billboard was posted by the Texas-based anti-abortion group, Life Always, The New York Times reports, conveniently timed for Black History Month.
