Ladies, You Could Be Aborting The Next First Black President

Guilt-inducing anti-abortion tactics know no bounds. A Life Always billboard in Chicago being unveiled tomorrow will depict Barack Obama‘s face and the warning, “Every 21 minutes, our next possible leader is aborted.” Ladies, carry to term the pregnancy you don’t want/can’t afford/will be irreparably harmed by because your future child might be the next president! (No doubt this ad is trying to appeal to black women, whom are relentlessly targeted with billboards claiming abortion is some kind of black genocide perpetuated by pro-choice racists, or something.) Alas, by that rock solid logic, you could also be aborting the next Adolf Hitler. Or Josef Stalin. Or Pol Pot. Or Trujillo. Or … well, you get the idea. [Huffington Post] Keep reading »

What Really Happens Inside A “Crisis Pregnancy Center”? Slate Explains

Yesterday, I talked about Florida’s “Woman’s Right To Know Act,” which sounds all lovely and innocuous but is actually this Orwellian-named, anti-abortion bill that would require women, including rape and incest victims, to see an ultrasound of their fetus before an abortion. Oh. Ugh. So-called “crisis pregnancy centers” — which can also be called innocuous-sounding “pregnancy help centers” or “pregnancy care centers” — take the cake for Orwellian names. America’s 3,000+ CPCs portray themselves as “clinics” to help women with unwanted pregnancies. However, they are often run by and/or almost entirely bankrolled by anti-abortion activists or Christian groups and despite occasionally owning an ultrasound machine, have no medical professionals on staff. As Slate.com’s Explainer, um, explains, a 2006 investigation by Congress even found some CPCs tell women over the phone that abortion increases the risk of breast cancer, which a lil’ something called the National Cancer Institute says is not true. The “Woman’s Right to Know Act” sounds so innocuous, doesn’t it? Of course women have a right to know! Alas, when it comes to restricting abortion access, it’s never innocuous.

The “Woman’s Right to Know Act,” passed by a Florida House subcommittee on Tuesday, would require women to view an ultrasound of her fetus before an abortion, or sign paperwork saying she had been offered the ultrasound but refused to see it. Rape and incest victims would have to provide proof that a crime had been committed against them if they wanted to opt out. Because, you know, making some poor teen girl prove she was impregnanted by her father is so compassionate and all. Keep reading »

South Dakota Governor Signs Bill Requiring 72-Hour Wait, “Counseling,” Before Abortion

South Dakota, South Dakota, South Dakota. What are we doing to do with you? Governor Dennis Daugaard, a Republican, has signed an extreme bill that will require women seeking an abortion to wait three whole days after meeting with her doctor for the procedure to be performed. This law will now be the longest waiting period in the nation. The bill also requires women receive pre-abortion “counseling” from so-called “crisis pregnancy centers,” which are anti-abortion groups that try to dissuade women from terminating pregnancies at all costs. A court challenge is expected imminently. But nevertheless, it’s a shameful day for women’s reproductive rights in America. [Reuters, NPR] Keep reading »

FBI Investigated Elderly Woman Who Threatened To Castrate Politician Over Planned Parenthood

While physical threats against anyone are never acceptable, something about a feisty old lady threatening to castrate a politician is kinda amusing. The FBI recently investigated an 80-something Connecticut woman after she made a phone call to an unnamed male politician threatening to Lorena Bobbitt his weenie. Why would she do such a thing? Because he supports efforts by Republicans in Congress to defund Planned Parenthood over abortion. Cops and local police descended upon her home, but determined that she was simply an impassioned former Planned Parenthood volunteer who was not serious about carrying out her dick-chopping threat. Whew. Calm down a little, granny! Violence never solves anything. Nevertheless, every busybody man in Congress just clamped his legs shut. [New Haven Register] Keep reading »

Holy thought police, bat girl! Police in Iowa arrested a pregnant woman in her second trimester last month for telling a nurse she’d been thinking about having an abortion. While in the hospital after falling down a flight of stairs, Christine Taylor, 22, told a nurse about her employment and marital woes; Christine also said she’d considered both abortion and adoption before deciding to carry her pregnancy to full-term. The nurse then got suspicious that Christine had been trying to self-abort by throwing herself down the stairs — Christine was arrested under Iowa’s feticide laws, and the poor woman spent two days in jail.
