How “True Blood” Handles The Topic Of Rape

It look me a while to catch on to “True Blood”; weeks of friends talking nonsense about Jason Stackhouse’s sex life, several Freudian comments on the part of my mother regarding race relations and the sale of vampire blood, and a picture of Alexander Skarsgård without his shirt on, to finally get me watching. And, admittedly, it wasn’t until about halfway through season 2 that I really got hooked. I had a voice in my head—I can’t remember whose—but it was someone’s who had promised me that “True Blood” was “the new ‘Buffy.’” Needless to say, “True Blood” pales to “Buffy” in every way possible, and I would be reluctant to say that the two are even comparable thematically or in genre, apart from the vampires and other pervading supernatural elements. Yet “True Blood” has its important moments—drug abuse, eternal virginity, bestiality, orgies and a human-vampire media war. In short, there are redeeming qualities that, through the gratuitous gore and graphic sex, give “True Blood” a point. Keep reading »

The Good, The Bad & The WTF: K-I-S-S-I-N-G On “True Blood”

Last night’s episode of “True Blood” was called “It’s In His Kiss.” Why? (SPOILER ALERT!) Because finally, finally, finally Sookie and Eric shared their first smooch. I mean, really, how did it take this long? After the jump, the good, the bad and the WTF moments of last night’s episode. Keep reading »

The Good, The Bad & The WTF: Another Swig Of “True Blood”

Sure, last night’s episode of “True Blood” (SPOILER ALERT) felt mired in lengthy scenes featuring Jason and those horrible werepanthers. But still, there was plenty to enjoy, especially Eric in his wide-eyed, teenage-like amnesiac state. After the jump, the best, worst, and most WTF moments of the episode “I’m Alive and on Fire.” Keep reading »

So Many Sookies

I can’t help but love this montage of “True Blood” characters saying Sookie Stackhouse’s name. Bill’s “Sookie” — which seems to be coming from his gut — is the most fun to imitate, but Eric’s is definitely the sexiest. No surprise there. Now, can someone make a montage of Lafayette calling people “hooker”? [NYMag] Keep reading »

The Good, The Bad & The WTF: Biting Into “True Blood” Episode 3

True Blood” season four had been off to a phenomenal start, with two episodes that caught us up on where the characters had been for the past year and set up all sorts of plot twists, turns, and unexpected staking for the weeks to come. So it was inevitable that we had to get a dud at some point. [For what it's worth, I have to say, I LOVED last night's episode. -- Amelia] And that’s just what last night’s episode felt like—filler that didn’t get us very far in the journey from point A to point B. Still, even a meh “True Blood” episode is a treat, so after the jump, the best, worst, and most WTF moments from the episode. And if you haven’t watched yet, SPOILER ALERT. Keep reading »

Has Joe Manganiello Gotten Too Beefy?

My relationship with Joe Manganiello goes way back. It started when he appeared in a bit part on “How I Met Your Mother.” Wow, that guy is hot, I thought. A few years later, the same gorgeous face appeared as a heartbroken werewolf on “True Blood” with a prediliction for taking his shirt off. I swooned. Joe has yet to make an appearance in the two episodes of “TB” season four that have aired so far, which is highly disappointing. So today, when I caught a glimpse Joe’s cover of Muscle & Fitness magazine, it was the first time we’d come face to face in months. And I freaked. That perfect, perfect specimen has gotten—gulp—way too muscle-bound for my taste. Put down the weights, Joe, put down the weights. Keep reading »

Anna Paquin Talks Sex Scenes, Watching Fans Fawn Over Stephen Moyer

“Maybe it should be weird, simulating sex with your husband in front of people. But it’s really not. When it’s a love scene with someone you actually love it’s not, ‘Can I touch him here, can I touch him there?’ You know what your boundaries are, or aren’t I suppose … There is probably something wrong with me, but I find it amusing to watch these men and women fawn all over him. It’s not like anyone is really trying to do anything inappropriate. They just him to hug them … or bite them.”

Anna Paquin of “True Blood” talks in the new issue of V Magazine about how easy it is to film sex scenes with her co-star and hubby Stephen Moyer. Oh, and she confirms that she is in fact down with him biting fans’ necks. Apparently, she thinks it’s hot. To each their own. [The Improper] Keep reading »

Tara Says Her Lesbian Love On “True Blood” Is The Real Thing

“When I first got the script, I thought [Tara's new direction] was great … I think [Tara] needed a new lease on life. She totally comes back more zen, and she’s a feisty season one Tara who we all loved … I don’t think [Tara] was expecting [a lesbian relationship]. I think it just happened. I think it was one of those things where you just fall in love with who you fall in love with. I don’t think she labels herself as one thing or the next. She just started hanging out and the next thing you know, she was in love. I don’t think she was in love with Eggs. Every time she was with him she was either stoned or under a spell. I don’t think that was real. I think it’s going to take her some time to realize that, but I think what she has now is a little more significant.”

—Rutina Wesley, who plays Tara on “True Blood,” talks to Entertainment Weekly about her character’s plot twists in season four. In last night’s episode, we discovered that Tara had run way from Bon Temps, is now going by the name Toni, and has a girlfriend. Woo-hoo! I’m thrilled Rutina thinks that she and her new love have staying power. Here’s hoping no one offs this new lady. [EW] Keep reading »

The Good, The Bad & The WTF: “True Blood” Season 4 Starts With A Bite

Last night’s season premiere of “True Blood” was as sprinkled with faerie dust as I ever could have hoped for. Since HBO decided to release the first six minutes of the episode weeks ago—which is kind of like the television equivalent of a drug dealer giving you your first dose free—I was wondering what tricks Alan Ball and crew would have up their sleeve. (If you haven’t watched yet, SPOILER ALERT.) And this was the big twist: although Sookie is only in the faerie realm for a few minutes, she was missing from Bon Temps, Louisiana, for a year and two weeks. In fact, everyone—from sheriff Bellefleur to Bill to Jason—had presumed her dead. The joy of last night’s episode was catching up with all the characters we love and seeing where they ended up a year later, sans Sookie.

After the jump, the good, the bad, and the WTF of the episode. Keep reading »

“True Blood” Gothic

This just might be my favorite Entertainment Weekly cover ever. Since Sunday night brings the “True Blood” season four premiere, EW has issued three covers featuring Anna Paquin posing “American Gothic”-style alongside Alexander Skarsgard, Joe Maganeillo, and her real-life husband Stephen Moyer. My fave is this Alexander one, because both of them have such perfect expressions. My least favorite has to be the Joe version, which you can check out after the jump. In real life, Alcide is the character I lust after the most—just not in those overalls. But nevermind what I think, pick your favorite after the jump. Keep reading »
