Vote For Your Favorite Rad & Inspiring Woman!

It should come as no surprise that for all the obsessing we do about Ryan Gosling, baby pandas, Grumpy Cat, Karl Lagerfeld, Chavril and the endless array of Be My Boyfriend candidates, The Frisky is most inspired by the work of the many rad women we look up to. There are so many pop culture heavyweights and high-powered newsmakers who show us how its done and inspire us with their achievements every day. Naturally, of course, we each have our favorites. With that in mind, each Frisky staff member was tasked with choosing and submitting their favorite rad and inspiring woman — okay, a few of us got to pick two — for nomination, along with a photo of herself and a blurb about why they chose the woman they did.

And now we want you to vote for your favorite of the 10 women we’ve chosen.

The poll will remain open for two weeks — until April 22 — and, at that time, the woman with the most votes will become, effectively, our Rad & Inspiring Woman of the Year.

So what do you say? Will you tell us who you love, too? Vote now! Keep reading »

Rachel Maddow Has Some Advice For Republicans On How To Talk About Rape

"Don't say rape. Ever."

Did you know that House Republicans go on a retreat every year? (I imagine Democrats do the same, by the way.) Do they serve tea sandwiches and practice trust falls? Who knows. On last night’s “Rachel Maddow Show,” Maddow discussed one of the scheduled retreat activities we do know about (which took place between between archery and crafts, I assume): a lecture of sorts taught by pollster Kellyanne Conway on how the GOP can better talk to female voters and get their conservative messaging across. One of the things Conway focused on what the subject of rape, which was a popular topic for more than handful of dingbat GOP politicians up for reelection in 2012. Nearly all of them lost their respective races, in part because of how offensive their comments about rape (and how it relates to abortion) were to their female constituents. So what did House Republicans learn from Conway? As one GOP strategist put it, “This is actually pretty simple. If you’re about to talk about rape as anything other than a brutal and horrible crime, stop.” Conway’s advice to GOP representatives, according to The National Review, was ”to tread carefully on language, particularly on sensitive matters such as rape, which she called a ‘four-letter word’ that should be used sparingly, or not at all.” In short, “Don’t say rape. Ever,” said Maddow.

Maddow brings up an interesting point — do Republicans actually think they have a policy problem with women (i.e. that their policies are unpopular with female voters and they need to change them) or just a language problem (i.e. it’s the way they talk about those policies that’s the problem, not the policies themselves)? Watch the full segment above!

Wendy Williams and Rachel Maddow
These Two Are Cute Together

Rachel Maddow and Wendy Williams are strange bedfellows indeed: Rachel is the host of MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show” and smarter than 99.9 percent of America, while Wendy Williams is the host of “The Wendy Williams Show” and the last time I watched it she was reenacting “The Real Housewives Of Atlanta” wig-snatch. So no one is as surprised as me that these two are really cute together. After gabbing about how slimy Donald Trump is, the two got down ‘n’ dirty talking about pop culture and politics. The fact that Rachel Maddow knows the exact ingredients found in sketti makes me love her even more.

Hey Girl, Rachel Maddow Loves Ryan Gosling Too

I must admit that I got a little squee-ish when I saw Rachel Maddow devote a couple of minutes at the top of her show last night to the Hey Girl, Ryan Gosling meme and its various incarnations. Of course, the purpose was to talk about the latest version of the meme, “Paul Ryan Gosling,” which melds together Hey Girl’s smooth, ladies man vibe with VP nominee Paul Ryan’s various conservative political views. Which is cool and all, but I really, really enjoyed hearing Maddow, a girl crush of mine, say Gosling’s name over and over. She really emphasizes the “S” in his name, doesn’t she? Gosssssssling. Clip above!

“Don’t lie–you have to remember it! The single best thing about honesty is that it requires no follow-up. Every lie is something you’re responsible for as long as you want to keep it going, and few of them merit that mental storage space.”

– Rachel Maddow tells O magazine about her favorite piece of advice. Let’s just say I’m not lying when I say I’ve got a raging crush on Rachel Maddow (who has a new book out today, by the way). Love. Her.
