I went to see Beyonce in concert a few months and was walking around for a week, all Braggy McBraggerson about how good my seats were, but now I’m frowning like I had nose bleeds. I was definitely nowhere close enough to get a kiss on the head like Madonna’s daughter Mercy. JEALZ.
“New York wasn’t everything I thought it would be. It did not welcome me with open arms. The first year, I was held up at gunpoint. Raped on the roof of a building I was dragged up to with a knife in my back, had my apartment broken into three times. I don’t know why; I had nothing of value after they took my radio the first time… [I] wasn’t anything I prepared for, trying to be a professional dancer, paying my rent by posing nude for art classes, staring at people staring at me naked. Daring them to think of me as anything but a form they were trying to capture with their pencils and charcoal…I was defiant. Hell-bent on surviving. On making it. But it was hard and it was lonely, and I had to dare myself every day to keep going.”
– Madonna comes out as a rape survivor in an essay she penned for the November issue of Harper’s Bazaar. In all fairness, she talked about her rape once before in an interview in 1995. “I have been raped and it is not an experience I would ever glamorize. Although it was devastating at the time, I know that it made me a much stronger person in retrospect. It forced me to be a survivor,” the singer revealed. I’m glad that Madge has chosen to talk about it once again in such a public forum. [ONTD]
Somehow, despite selling fewer than a million copies of her latest album, Madonna made it to the top of the Forbes 2013 top-earning celebs list. She has her tour to thank: It grossed $305 million. Merchandise sales, her clothing line and fragrance, and investments also helped get her to the No. 1 spot; Forbes estimates she made $125 million between June 2012 and June 2013—more than she’s ever earned since Forbes started the Celebrity 100 list. Before Beyonce, before Britney, before Mariah and all the others, there was Madonna Louise Ciccone. She’s done a lot through the years, some questionable, some awesome, but all unique and great. Without Madonna, we wouldn’t know about La Isla Bonita or the empowering effect latex has on your sex life. Without Madonna, we wouldn’t have “All The Way” Mae Mordabito from “A League Of Their Own” or everyone’s karaoke standby “Like A Prayer.” In honor of Madge’s 55th birthday, we’re taking a look at the gems of wisdom she’s given us through song. Here are Madonna’s lessons in life and love — in GIFs! Keep reading »
For her upcoming 55th birthday, Rocco Ritchie (who I can’t believe is 13!), knew exactly what his mom would want for her birthday: a dance. He showed off some of his dance moves for Madge, which she posted on her Instagram with the caption “Rocco Rides the Waves.” You can hear Madonna’s coos of approval, telling Rocco to “work it out.” I’m sure none of us are surprised that the kid’s got some moves. Genetics. I’d really like to see these two go out clubbing together. [WOW]
