We’ve got another month and a half to go until season five of “Mad Men” starts on March 25, and fans can’t wait to find out where things stand with Don Draper, his family, and everyone else at Sterling Cooper Draper Price. We found just the thing to wear to a premiere party — this falling Draper pendant from Saucier Jewelry.
“I think in the world of the show we see the office through Peggy’s eyes. She’s the new girl and we see her from her very first day… And we’ve watched through over 50 episodes of television her grow and become more confident and we’ve watched Don alternately shout at her and correct her and not be very nice to her but also be profoundly nice to her … I think Peggy is very important to Don. And I think you saw at the end of season three, when the firm blows up and they have to start all over again, he says ‘If you leave, I’ll spend the rest of my life trying to hire you back.’ And I think that sums up relationship that Don and Peggy have.”
Oooh. That’s no good. Who thought this was a good advertisement to put in downtown Manhattan? I love “Mad Men” as much as the next latte-drinking, Volvo-driving, East Coast liberal and I know the image of man in a suit falling from the sky in the opening credits is powerful iconography tied to the show. But even I’ll admit this particular image is awfully evocative of 9/11 (emphasis on “awful”) and the victims who jumped from the Twin Towers to the deaths. To many people, myself included, a man in a suit falling from the sky like that can only mean one thing and, God bless Matt Weiner, but not acknowledging that is just a tad insensitive. “I find it really interesting that people think that, like, in seasons three and four, she’s become unlikable because she’s become more independent. Everybody liked Betty when she was, like, in a living hell in season one and two, and now they hate her. … I think as an audience member you can empathize with her struggling to find happiness — I think it’s an ongoing process. … I think it’s funny that it carries over into my life, my actual life, when [show creator] Matt [Weiner] writes a storyline that Betty’s unlikable, all of a sudden, everybody hates me. I want to leave the show in a place where you have an idea of what it meant and how it’s related to you. It’s a very tall order, but I always talk about ‘Abbey Road.’ What’s the song at the end of ‘Abbey Road?’ It’s called ‘The End.’ There is a culmination of an experience of people working at their highest level. And all I want to do is not wear out the welcome. I was 35 when I wrote the ‘Mad Men’ pilot, 42 when I got to make it, and I’ll be 50 when it goes off the air. So that’s what you’re gonna get. Do I know everything that’s gonna happen? No, I don’t. But I just want it to be entertaining, and I want people to remember it fondly and not think it ended in a fart.”

It’s about 10 years too late to help Shia LaBeouf. But maybe Kiernan Shipka can still do some good in the wild and crazy world of child stars. There doesn’t seem to be much debate over what have been the four best television shows of the past 10 years. It seems like an easy question to answer, particularly since it’s become increasingly difficult to write about the state of TV (or even the state of popular culture) without tangentially mentioning one of the following four programs — “The Sopranos,” “The Wire,” “Mad Men,” and/or “Breaking Bad.”
And that’s not just a Chuck Klosterman opinion. A commenter on a Vulture Recap of Breaking Bad remarks:
“This past season ‘Breaking Bad’ passed ‘The Sopranos’ as the best show ever on television (followed by ‘Deadwood’ and ‘Mad Men’).”

Jon Hamm has nabbed himself four Emmys playing the now-iconic role of Don Draper on “Mad Men.” But apparently, he was not producers first choice for the role. And he actually knows who the makers of the show originally had in mind for the starring role—Thomas Jane of “Hung.” “Nobody knew who I was. The casting directors didn’t know who I was. I wasn’t on anybody’s lists,” Jon explained on comedian Marc Maron’s podcast this week. “The funny thing was, I think they went to Thomas Jane for it, and they were told that Thomas Jane does not do television.” Hee hee.
